American Airlines carry-on size and baggage guide

Measure your roller, plan for American Eagle valet service, and check fare-specific baggage costs before you pack.

The American Airlines carry-on size limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), including wheels and handles. You also get one personal item, including on Basic Economy. The bigger question is what happens to that roller on a regional connection or after the overhead bins fill.

Build your packing plan around two bags with separate jobs. The suitcase holds clothes; the smaller bag keeps everything you cannot surrender at the gate. That distinction matters more than buying a bag labeled “airline approved.”

The official cabin policy also requires the main bag to fit the airport sizer. Its centimeter figures are published rounded equivalents. Use a single measurement system when checking your bag.

A backpack can occupy either allowance. A large travel backpack does not become a personal item because it has shoulder straps. Likewise, a laptop sleeve carried separately is another item unless it fits inside your permitted bags.

Keep the personal item genuinely usable beneath a seat. A bottle in a side pocket or a bulging laptop compartment changes its packed shape. Our underseat bag guide explains why capacity labels alone are a poor fit test.

Measure the packed shape, not the suitcase name

Start with the bag fully packed and its expansion zip closed. Retract the trolley handle, but include its fixed housing and every protruding wheel. Measure between the furthest points, rather than following the curve of the fabric.

  1. Height: stand the roller upright and measure from the floor to its highest fixed point.
  2. Width: include side handles, feet and filled external pockets.
  3. Depth: check the fullest section, including the front pocket and rear shell.

Hypothetical fit check: a bag measuring 21.5 x 14 x 10 inches fails the depth test. Its dimensions add up to only 45.5 inches, but a small total does not cancel an oversized side. American Airlines carry-on size is a three dimension limit for an ordinary suitcase.

A suitcase can fail American's depth limit even when another side is smaller: compare each dimension separately.
Original measurement example. A smaller height cannot offset excess depth; the garment bag has a separate total dimension rule.

For a soft backpack, measure it after loading your actual clothes and electronics. Compression straps help only when they reduce the whole packed profile. A rigid laptop panel cannot compress just because the surrounding fabric can.

When shopping, look for overall dimensions and an expanded depth figure. The carry-on luggage comparison separates those measurements from a maker’s nominal case size. Leave room to bring souvenirs home without opening the expansion zip.

Basic Economy includes a carry-on, but bin space is another issue

On American, Basic Economy includes the same one carry-on and one personal item combination. The fare rules say these travelers normally board last, typically in Group 9. Eligible status or card benefits can change the group shown on the boarding pass.

An included carry-on does not reserve an overhead compartment. Pack for a possible gate check even when the bag is compliant. Buying Main Cabin solely for a guaranteed place for your roller would solve the wrong problem.

Basic Economy checked baggage also depends on the route and ticket date. Australia and New Zealand include one checked bag on that fare. Asia, India and Qatar include one for tickets issued on or after April 23, 2026.

American Eagle: prepare for valet service, with one important exception

On applicable American Eagle regional flights, bags above the personal item dimensions go through complimentary valet service. The bag returns on the jetbridge after arrival. Embraer ERJ-175 aircraft allow carry-ons and do not offer this valet service.

Check the aircraft listed for each segment, especially a short connection after a long flight. Aircraft can change, so keep your essentials accessible even after selecting a flight. A compliant American Airlines carry-on size does not make a small regional bin larger.

At handover, ask where that particular bag will return. Do not assume a bag checked through to a tagged destination follows the same collection process as a regional valet bag. Keep the claim stub until the bag is back with you.

For a short connection, organize your smaller bag before boarding begins. Moving a charger, medicine and documents while standing in a narrow jetbridge is avoidable work. A removable pouch inside the roller makes that transfer faster.

What to remove before a bag leaves the cabin

Keep travel documents, keys, essential medication and fragile valuables in your personal item. Remove spare batteries, power banks and electronic cigarettes before handing over a roller. A luggage tag will not make those items accessible during the flight.

American’s restricted items policy now limits portable chargers to two per passenger, each no more than 100 Wh. Keep them easily accessible rather than in overhead bins. Do not recharge a power bank from the seat power outlet.

Those limits are separate from the suitcase dimensions. Check the rating printed on the charger before packing; capacity in mAh alone needs the correct voltage for conversion. Our power bank packing guide explains the battery terminology, but American’s specific limit governs this flight.

Security screening is another separate check. Use our cabin liquids guide for your toiletry bag. A bottle can fit inside a permitted backpack and still fail the checkpoint rules.

Checked bags: budget from your route and ticket date

For ordinary checked bags, the standard outside dimension total is 62 inches / 158 cm. Economy’s usual weight allowance is 50 lb / 23 kg. Free bags to or from Australia and New Zealand have a 70 lb / 32 kg allowance; excess paid bags use 50 lb / 23 kg.

Example base fees in USD for American marketed and operated U.S. domestic travel, no free bag benefit, tickets issued on or after May 18, 2026. Per passenger, each direction; applicable taxes extra.
FareFirst bag: online / airportSecond bag: online / airport
Main Cabin$45 / $50$55 / $60
Basic Economy$50 / $55$60 / $65

Earlier tickets can use earlier rates. International regions differ, and some fares include a bag. Confirm the allowance in your reservation against the dated checked baggage schedule before paying.

Hypothetical domestic round trip: one passenger with Main Cabin and no bag benefit pays USD 90 for one checked bag each way online. The same plan costs USD 100 at the airport under the table’s conditions. Compare that full trip total with any fare upgrade, rather than comparing only the outbound price.

Online bag payment is available up to two hours before departure on eligible itineraries. The optional fee schedule excludes certain routes from this online payment service. Card or status benefits require their own eligibility checks, including the operating airline.

A free checked bag can still attract an excess charge

Free baggage does not automatically mean unlimited weight or size. Measure a checked case by adding its three outside dimensions, then weigh it separately. A case can pass one test and fail the other.

If a checked item exceeds both weight and size limits, American applies the higher excess charge, plus the ordinary bag charge. Destination restrictions can also limit acceptance. Use the oversize and overweight rules before relying on payment to solve a fit problem.

Connections and codeshares: read “operated by”

A flight sold with an American flight number can be flown by a partner. Check that operator’s cabin restrictions for each segment. Use our British Airways baggage guide when that airline appears in the operating line.

Make a short itinerary note with three columns: operator, cabin dimensions and weight limit. Choose bags that pass every relevant segment. Avoid treating a checked baggage allowance printed for the whole booking as proof that cabin rules are identical.

Separate reservations need special attention. American only through checks bags when all tickets share a reservation and the connection is to American or oneworld. Ask about collection and rechecking before committing to a tight transfer.

Traveling with children or medical equipment

A breast pump and a small soft cooler of breast milk travel outside the ordinary cabin bag count. One diaper bag per child is also permitted. Keep those supplies distinct from an extra general travel tote.

Each ticketed customer traveling with a child can check one stroller and one car seat free. The family baggage rules explain where each item must be handed over. Noncollapsible strollers have different handover requirements from ordinary folding models.

For an international lap infant, there is a free checked bag allowance of 25 lb / 11 kg. Its maximum size is 22 x 14 x 9 inches. That is an infant checked allowance, not an extra adult roller permission.

Medical and mobility devices do not count toward the normal cabin limit. Storage and battery requirements still apply. For a CPAP or mobility aid, use the medical equipment guidance and arrange any needed assistance before departure.

Your final packing check

  • Measure both bags packed, including wheels, handles and filled pockets.
  • Check the operator and aircraft for every flight, not just the first.
  • Save the checked allowance shown in your reservation, including any benefit.
  • Put essential items and permitted batteries in the bag that stays with you.
  • Label the roller and ask about its collection point if an agent takes it.

American Airlines baggage questions

Can I take a backpack and a suitcase?

Yes, when the backpack fits the personal item allowance and the suitcase fits the main carry-on allowance. Two large cabin bags do not become a permitted pair just because one is a backpack.

Does American Airlines weigh carry-on bags?

The ordinary cabin policy gives dimensions but no general numeric weight cap. That does not establish a partner airline’s policy. Check the operating carrier and pack a load you can handle safely.

Will a 24 inch suitcase work as a carry-on?

A suitcase actually measuring 24 inches on its longest side exceeds American Airlines carry-on size. If 24 inches is only a product name, find its full outside measurements. Do not plan around another traveler’s experience of an agent overlooking a larger bag.

Does a garment bag count as an extra item?

No. The soft garment bag option replaces the main carry-on. It is not a third ordinary cabin bag.

Will my regional valet bag go to baggage claim?

American’s regional valet service returns the bag on the jetbridge. A normal gate check can follow a different collection process. Confirm the destination on the tag and the collection point when handing over the bag.
