Frontier Airlines carry-on size and baggage guide

Know which Frontier bag is free, which needs an overhead allowance, and how bundles, elite status and checked weight limits change your packing plan.

Frontier Airlines carry-on size is 24 x 16 x 10 inches, including wheels and handles, with a 35 lb maximum. That is the overhead bag allowance. The free personal item is smaller: 18 x 14 x 8 inches, and it must fit under the seat ahead.

The expensive mistake is packing a perfectly compliant roller but buying a ticket that only includes a personal item. Check both the bag’s measurements and the baggage attached to your reservation before you leave home.

Frontier’s bag policy counts handles, wheels and straps. Its current personal item limit includes a weight cap too. Metric figures above are rounded conversions of the published inch and pound limits.

The personal item dimensions are also written as 14 inches high, 18 inches wide and 8 inches deep. That is the same size allowance with the first two numbers reversed. Compare the full set of three measurements, rather than matching only a bag’s advertised height.

Frontier baggage decision diagram: personal item within 18 by 14 by 8 inches goes underseat; larger compliant carry-on within 24 by 16 by 10 inches needs an overhead allowance; bigger luggage needs a checked-bag assessment.
Choose the bag category first, then check whether your fare or benefits include it. Diagram is schematic, not an airport sizer.

What does your ticket actually include?

A Basic fare includes one personal item. A larger cabin bag costs extra unless a bundle or eligible benefit includes it. The current Frontier bundle comparison separates the options:

Booking optionCabin bagsChecked bagsUseful distinction
Basic farePersonal itemPurchased separatelyPay separately for an overhead carry-on
Economy bundlePersonal item and carry-onPurchased separatelyA cabin bag is included
Premium bundlePersonal item and carry-onPurchased separatelyIncludes Board First
Business bundlePersonal item and carry-onTwo bags, up to 50 lb eachHigher checked weight than the standard 40 lb

Bundles apply across passengers and directions on the booking. That matters for a family where only one person needs a suitcase. Compare the full reservation total against adding individual bags before buying a bundle for everybody.

Board First’s overhead space guarantee requires boarding with Group 1. A regular paid carry-on and that boarding product are distinct purchases. Read the items listed in your confirmation instead of treating any earlier boarding position as proof of a bag allowance.

Elite benefits need a name and a booking date

For current benefits before the January 2027 update, Silver does not include an overhead carry-on. Gold includes one for the member only. Platinum includes a carry-on and one checked bag for the member and up to eight other members on the same reservation.

Diamond includes a carry-on and two checked bags for that same party scope. These are the baggage distinctions in Frontier’s current elite benefits. Add the correct membership details to the booking and inspect each passenger’s allowance.

For bookings made on or after January 1, 2027, recheck the benefit before paying. Frontier has announced updated elite benefits tied to that booking date. A status badge alone is not a safe packing instruction for a future reservation.

Credit card checked bags are a separate benefit

The primary Frontier Airlines World Mastercard holder can receive two free checked bags on Frontier operated flights. This does not mean two free overhead bags. Frontier’s card benefit weight rule uses 40 lb, not the Business bundle’s 50 lb.

Keep the card benefit, elite allowance and bundle allowance separate when reading your receipt. If a bag appears as included, check its permitted weight as well as its price. Do not combine two benefits into an invented heavier allowance.

Will your packed backpack pass the personal item check?

The useful question is how large the bag is after packing. A backpack can gain several inches of depth through a loaded front pocket. A roller can exceed its advertised case size because the listing leaves out wheels.

  1. Pack the bag exactly as you plan to travel, including your laptop and toiletries.
  2. Close the zippers and retract the handle. Secure loose straps without hiding a rigid protrusion.
  3. Measure between the furthest outside points in three directions. Use a flat wall and book to locate soft bulges.
  4. Weigh the bag with everything inside. Keep a small margin for items added on the way home.
  5. Check that a purse or laptop sleeve fits inside your one personal item if you have no separate cabin allowance.

A bag marketed as an underseater is not automatically compliant. Use the actual measurements in our underseat bag comparisons rather than the product category alone. A soft bag is easier to reshape, but empty fabric dimensions cannot prove a packed fit.

Three hypothetical packing decisions

Worked examples using outside measurements, not product recommendations
Packed bagAssessmentNext step
Backpack: 18 x 14 x 9 in, 15 lbOne inch too deep for a personal itemRemove contents and remeasure, or buy an appropriate overhead allowance
Roller: 23 x 15 x 9.5 in, 25 lbWithin the carry-on measurements and weight, too large as a personal itemConfirm a carry-on is purchased or included
Roller: 24 x 16 x 11 in, 30 lbOne inch too deep even for a carry-onClose the expansion panel and remeasure, or assess checked baggage

These examples show why total volume is a poor shortcut. A bag can have less volume than the permitted rectangular box and still exceed one side. Our carry-on luggage guide explains overall size versus advertised case size.

How much will Frontier charge for bags?

There is no single carry-on price that applies to every flight. The quote depends on your itinerary, travel dates and when you buy. Use the Bag Price Checker on the official bag page, or open your actual reservation.

Record the currency, passenger, direction and bag category beside each quote. Price the return separately. An outbound purchase does not tell you what a separately booked return will cost.

Buying before the airport is generally cheaper. If you are deciding between airlines, compare the total with your actual baggage added. Our airline guide directory lets you check the other carrier’s physical limits too.

The checked bag’s 40 lb trap

First calculate linear size: length plus width plus depth. A hypothetical 29 x 19 x 12 inch suitcase totals 60 inches. It is below 62 inches, but a 46 lb packed weight still exceeds a standard 40 lb allowance.

Frontier’s optional service schedule lists these additional charges in USD, per bag, per direction. They sit on top of any applicable checked bag purchase:

ConditionPublished additional charge
41 to 50 lb with a standard 40 lb allowanceUSD 75
51 to 99.99 lb, booking before April 4, 2026USD 100
51 to 99.99 lb, booking on or after April 4, 2026USD 129
63 to 110 linear inchesUSD 75 oversize charge

These are the general charges checked October 17, 2026. A verified higher weight allowance or specific exemption changes the assessment. Frontier’s schedule refuses ordinary baggage weighing 100 lb or more, or exceeding 110 linear inches.

The 46 lb example avoids the standard overweight charge only if its actual allowance covers that weight. For instance, Business includes checked bags up to 50 lb each. Simply paying for a standard checked bag does not create that higher limit.

At the gate: three different situations

An unpaid overhead bag: the bag may meet Frontier Airlines carry-on size but still lack the required purchase. Resolve this in your booking before arriving at the gate. A compliant suitcase is not evidence of an included service.

An oversized personal item or carry-on: Frontier checks cabin bag sizes during boarding and can charge for bags outside the allowance. Do not budget around a universal gate price from an old screenshot. The current quote for your trip is what matters.

A compliant, entitled carry-on with no bin space: Frontier says it may check the bag at the gate without an extra charge. This is different from charging for a bag that was never included. Ask where to collect it and retain its tag.

Keep a small removable pouch with medication, identification, keys and valuables. If the bag goes into the hold, take out power banks and spare batteries. Prepare that pouch before boarding so you do not have to unpack a full suitcase in the aisle.

Do not confuse purchase time with bag drop time

Frontier’s airport timeline closes check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure. It recommends reaching the airport two hours before the flight, with boarding starting 45 minutes before departure. Boarding ends 20 minutes before departure.

Use those as deadlines to plan around, not a reason to join a queue at the last moment. Buying a checked bag online still leaves the physical bag to tag and hand over. Allow extra time when your airport or itinerary needs it.

Traveling with children, medical equipment or military benefits

Baby bags and equipment

Frontier allows an adult traveling with a lap infant to bring a second personal item, such as a diaper bag, free. Its small child policy states that exception specifically for lap infants. Do not assume it grants every adult a spare bag on every family trip.

Strollers and car seats can be checked without charge and do not consume the ordinary cabin bag allowance. A stroller can be used through the airport before gate checking. Ask where it will be returned, particularly if you need it during a connection.

Breast pumps and breast milk can travel in addition to your personal item under Frontier’s nursing and baby item guidance. Keep them organized for inspection. Review our security liquids guide for the separate checkpoint process.

Medical bags

Bags containing only medical devices and supplies are exempt from cabin and checked bag fees. Frontier’s medical equipment guidance also requires cabin medical devices to fit its permitted dimensions. Respiratory devices and oxygen concentrators have extra requirements.

Pack medication where you can reach it. Keep the medical bag separate from ordinary vacation packing so its purpose is clear. Arrange any device approval before travel instead of relying on the bag fee exemption to cover every equipment rule.

Military allowance

Eligible active United States military travelers receive a personal item, a carry-on and two checked bags. Oversize and overweight fees are waived for those two checked bags, within baggage acceptance limits. Show valid qualifying identification at the airport.

The military FAQ updated October 8, 2026 also covers accompanying spouses and children. The qualifying member must be present and traveling on the same itinerary. This eligibility exception does not mean all relatives traveling separately receive free luggage.

Connecting flights and a final packing check

Frontier Airlines carry-on size applies to the Frontier leg of your journey. If another airline operates a later leg, inspect that airline’s allowance separately. A through journey, a travel agency receipt or a single suitcase label does not prove identical cabin rules.

Aircraft storage space can still affect whether a compliant overhead bag stays in the cabin. Keep essentials accessible even when your dimensions and purchase are correct. For international travel, also check destination restrictions on the contents of your bags.

  • Match the bag to its personal item, carry-on or checked category.
  • Measure it packed, including the outside pockets, wheels and handles.
  • Confirm the allowance for each passenger and direction.
  • Check whether a benefit uses the standard 40 lb checked limit or a higher allowance.
  • Keep a copy of the receipt and any relevant benefit terms.
  • Leave time for bag drop before its closing deadline.

Frontier baggage questions

Can I bring a backpack on Frontier for free?

Yes, if it qualifies as your one personal item and fits within 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Frontier’s current bag page lists a 35 lb maximum. Measure the packed backpack, including bulging pockets and straps.

Can I take both a purse and a carry-on?

Yes, when the overhead carry-on is purchased or included. The purse can be your personal item. With only the Basic personal item allowance, put the purse inside your compliant bag rather than arriving with two ordinary pieces.

Does a 24 inch suitcase count as a free personal item?

No. A 24 inch roller is a carry-on candidate, subject to its full outside width, depth and weight. It is too large for Frontier’s free personal item category, and it still needs an overhead allowance.

Is the Frontier carry-on weight limit different from checked baggage?

Yes. The carry-on maximum is 35 lb, while a standard checked bag allows 40 lb. Some checked bag benefits allow more, including the Business bundle’s 50 lb limit per included bag.

Is an airport sizer pass on the outbound trip enough for the return?

No. Pack and measure the bag again before the return. Added purchases, souvenirs and a reopened expansion zipper can change its size or weight, even when the suitcase itself is unchanged.
