Iberia baggage allowance: carry-on sizes, fares and checked bags

Find the right cabin dimensions, decode the checked bag allowance on your fare, and plan for Air Nostrum aircraft door collection.

Iberia baggage allowance includes a 56 x 40 x 25 cm carry-on and a 40 x 30 x 15 cm personal item in Economy. The main bag can weigh up to 10 kg, including on Basic fares. A checked suitcase is a separate entitlement, so look for the bag count on your ticket before packing one.

A cheap fare doesn’t automatically mean a tiny cabin allowance here. The complications usually come from the operating airline, a regional connection or the particular fare within your cabin. Those details matter more than a suitcase’s advertised inch size.

Business, intercontinental routes56 x 40 x 25 cm per bagGenerally two bags, up to 14 kg each; US departures are an exception

Centimeters are the controlling measurements; the inch figures above are rounded conversions. The personal item dimensions are also written as 30 x 40 x 15 cm. Rotating the stated height and width doesn’t create a larger allowance.

The main case goes overhead, while your handbag, laptop bag or small backpack goes under the seat. A separate laptop bag uses that personal item slot. It isn’t a third ordinary bag alongside a backpack and roller.

Use the official cabin baggage policy to confirm any unusual combination. Iberia’s group guidance covers Iberia, Iberia Express and Iberia Regional Air Nostrum. It doesn’t make every flight sold on iberia.com an Iberia operated flight.

Business passengers should check two specific exceptions

Business customers connecting to an Iberia long-haul flight can generally bring two cabin bags on the connecting Iberia flights. Each bag still has its own size and 14 kg limit. Two pieces don’t mean one large case weighing 28 kg.

For departures from any US airport, Iberia publishes a limit of one main cabin bag plus one personal item. That exception also appears in its Business guidance. Check your outbound and return flights separately rather than copying the return allowance.

There is another detail for agency bookings: the Business Executive fare table lists two cabin pieces on short and medium routes. The general cabin table lists one. If you hold that fare, confirm the entitlement in your booking before bringing a second case.

Measure the whole case, then weigh the packed result

A suitcase sold as a 22 inch cabin bag can still fail Iberia’s measurements. The retailer may be describing the case body. Wheels, a fixed handle and a bulging front pocket can extend beyond it.

  1. Pack first. Fill the external pockets and close the expansion zip as you intend to travel.
  2. Measure the outermost points. Include wheels and handles, then compare each side with 56, 40 and 25 cm.
  3. Weigh that exact bag. Add toiletries, chargers and the items you usually remember at the last moment.
  4. Repeat for your small bag. Its 15 cm depth can be the tightest measurement.

Hypothetical fit check: a packed roller measuring 55 x 39 x 26 cm is too deep for Iberia. Its total dimensions happen to equal 120 cm, below 56 + 40 + 25 = 121 cm. That doesn’t help: cabin dimensions are individual limits, not a shared total.

The checked bag rule works differently because it uses a combined measurement. Keep these two tests separate. Our carry-on luggage guide explains how to read overall measurements before buying.

A roomy travel backpack can be your main 10 kg cabin bag if it fits the main limit. It doesn’t become a personal item because it lacks wheels. For a smaller companion bag, compare its packed depth with the options in our underseat bag guide.

Air Nostrum: allowed baggage can still travel in the hold

On Iberia Regional Air Nostrum flights, plan to hand over your main bag at the aircraft door. The published procedure covers bags up to 10 kg. They travel in the hold without charge and are returned at the aircraft when you arrive.

This is a storage limitation on smaller aircraft, rather than a new, smaller published cabin bag size. Passing the 56 x 40 x 25 cm test doesn’t guarantee that your roller stays beside you. Put everything needed during the flight in the small bag before boarding.

Two different reasons an Iberia cabin bag enters the hold: Air Nostrum aircraft door collection, or a full flight with collection instructions to confirm.
A bag can meet the allowance and still enter the hold. Confirm its return point before leaving it with staff.

Hypothetical connection: you’re flying Porto to Madrid on Air Nostrum, then Madrid to New York on Iberia. Your compliant 9.5 kg roller can travel in the hold on the regional sector. Collect it at the aircraft as instructed before continuing to the next gate.

Allow for that handover when planning your connection. There isn’t a reliable universal number of minutes for unloading. If the return point changes operationally, follow the crew’s instructions rather than walking away toward the terminal without checking.

A full flight is a different reason for collection

Iberia may also ask you to check a compliant 10 kg cabin bag when overhead space is limited. It may send an email or WhatsApp message before departure. That space related collection is free, regardless of fare.

Follow the drop location in the message: it may be the check-in desk or the gate. Confirm the collection point and keep the bag receipt. Don’t assume a bag taken on a mainline flight will come back at the aircraft like an Air Nostrum bag.

An oversized or overweight case is a different matter. It must be checked under your fare’s checked baggage conditions and can attract a charge. A free collection for a full flight isn’t an exemption from the size or weight limit.

Which Iberia fares include checked baggage?

Check the fare family as well as the cabin name. The current Economy fare comparison separates Basic, Optimal, Executive, Comfort and Flexible. Executive has a particularly easy trap: its checked allowance differs by route category.

Economy fareShort and medium routesLong-haul routes
BasicNo included checked bagNo included checked bag
OptimalOne checked bagOne checked bag
ExecutiveChecked bag costs extraOne checked bag
ComfortOne checked bagOne checked bag
FlexibleOne checked bagOne checked bag
Air ShuttleOne checked bag on the Madrid to Barcelona serviceNot applicable

For Premium Economy, Optimal and Executive list one checked piece. Comfort and Flexible list two. The Premium Economy comparison also warns that attributes can vary by country.

For short and medium routes, Business Optimal and Executive list one checked piece. Business Comfort and Flexible list two. Confirm longer routes in the booking rather than extending that table to every Business itinerary.

Your ticket’s baggage entry is the useful final checkpoint. 0PC means no included checked piece; 1PC means one. Read this alongside the permitted weight, any purchased extras and applicable status benefits.

That distinction keeps Iberia baggage allowance from turning into a misleading promise of a free suitcase. Basic can include the main cabin bag while excluding a checked bag. Those two statements are perfectly compatible.

Standard checked size and weight

A standard checked piece is up to 23 kg, about 50.7 lb, and 158 cm combined dimensions. Add length, width and height, including handles, wheels and pockets. The combined limit is about 62.2 inches.

A heavier allowance or purchased option can permit up to 32 kg per bag. A regular suitcase over 32 kg isn’t accepted as normal baggage. Specialist equipment has separate acceptance rules, so arrange it before travel rather than treating cargo limits as suitcase allowances.

Bag counts belong to individual passengers. Don’t assume two 23 kg entitlements let one person check a 46 kg suitcase. The individual maximum applies even if your combined luggage weighs less than the group’s total allowance.

Extra bag prices: compare the same weight and purchase stage

Iberia sells extra bags in 15, 23 and 32 kg options where available. Peru and Ecuador only offer the 23 kg option in its checked baggage FAQ. The 15 kg option isn’t sold at the airport.

Prices depend on route, season, weight and when you pay. Adding a bag during booking offers the lowest purchase stage. Online check-in costs more, while airport prices are higher still.

The following are published EUR ranges for an additional first 23 kg bag, checked October 17, 2026. They aren’t a quote for every ticket. Separate destination exceptions apply to Dakar and Santo Domingo.

Published route zoneOnline rangeAirport range
Spain, including the islands, Ceuta and MelillaEUR 18 to 57EUR 42 to 83
Europe, Israel and North Africa, excluding DakarEUR 20 to 95EUR 45 to 110
America, Asia and Qatar, excluding Santo DomingoEUR 50 to 135EUR 70 to 164

Use the checked baggage price table and booking tools for your exact journey. When a connection crosses zones, the higher priced zone applies. A route’s cheapest advertised amount isn’t the price of every extra bag.

Hypothetical cost comparison: your fare includes one 23 kg suitcase, but you expect it to weigh 27 kg. Compare a permitted heavier option with moving 4 kg into another paid bag. Check the actual total in the booking before deciding.

Iberia’s published Economy excess weight charge is EUR 15 per kilogram on America and Asia routes. On domestic, Europe, North Africa and Middle East routes, it lists EUR 12 to 15 per kilogram. Business and eligible status benefits can change that calculation.

For example, four extra kilograms at EUR 15 per kilogram produce EUR 60 in excess weight charges. That calculation assumes the route and fare use that rate. It doesn’t include the cost of buying a bag when none is included.

Purchased additional baggage is generally not refundable. Check passenger, direction and flight coverage before paying. Save the receipt alongside the booking’s original baggage entry.

Status benefits need their own check

Iberia Club tiers and eligible oneworld status can add baggage or waive excess weight. The conditions depend on cabin, operator and the original allowance. For example, the additional 23 kg bag for Oro or oneworld Sapphire applies when the existing allowance is zero or one piece.

These benefits don’t automatically apply to LEVEL. Free excess weight benefits also don’t extend to extra bags you purchase. A loyalty card is worth adding to the reservation early, but the displayed allowance still needs checking.

An Iberia booking can contain different operating airlines

Open every flight and find the words operated by. For cabin baggage, follow that carrier’s applicable rules. For checked bags, read the allowance attached to the ticket and the interline conditions, rather than applying the cabin rule automatically.

Operator or serviceWhat to check
Iberia ExpressThe Iberia Group cabin dimensions apply; confirm its own fare package for checked luggage.
Iberia Regional Air NostrumMain 10 kg bag travels in the hold under the aircraft door collection procedure.
VuelingThe main bag limit is 55 x 40 x 20 cm, up to 10 kg. Overhead inclusion depends on the applicable fare or purchased entitlement.
LEVELThe published cabin allowance includes a 56 x 40 x 25 cm, 10 kg bag and a 40 x 30 x 15 cm personal item. Check separate checked baggage and loyalty conditions.
American Airlines or British AirwaysRead the operating airline’s cabin rules, even if the booking carries an Iberia flight number.

A case exactly 25 cm deep fits Iberia’s depth limit but exceeds Vueling’s 20 cm limit by 5 cm. That is a real packing difference, not a branding technicality. Choose the strictest applicable measurements if one suitcase must cover the whole itinerary.

For American operated sectors, compare the American Airlines carry-on rules. For a Heathrow connection, check the British Airways baggage guide. Don’t assume an alliance means identical dimensions or weight limits.

Vueling checked baggage has an additional distinction. Iberia publishes specific conditions for flights carrying an Iberia code, including a one 23 kg allowance for the described Vueling only itinerary. Confirm that the flight number and ticket meet those conditions before relying on a generic Vueling fare screen.

Pack for a handover before someone asks for the roller

Keep passports, medication, keys and valuables in your small bag. Make them accessible before an Air Nostrum departure or a full flight. Repacking on the steps of an aircraft is an avoidable nuisance.

Power banks and spare batteries must stay in the cabin. Iberia permits up to two power banks per passenger, each no more than 100 Wh. It prohibits using them during the flight or storing them in overhead lockers.

Carry them in the personal item or another permitted accessible location, with terminals protected. Remove them before a roller enters the hold. The electronic device rules set the airline’s restrictions; our power bank packing guide explains battery labels.

Liquid screening is a separate check from the airline’s bag allowance. Pack for 100 ml containers within a clear one liter bag unless your checkpoint confirms otherwise. See our guide to liquids in cabin baggage before packing toiletries for a connection.

Children, mobility equipment and unusual luggage

Passengers with an infant can bring an additional bag of food, drink and necessities for the flight. Infant and child tickets have the accompanying passenger’s free checked allowance. That doesn’t create a checked bag when the adult’s fare has none.

A stroller or car seat can also travel free under the children’s policy. Ask where it will be returned, especially on connections. Some airports require stroller collection at the final baggage carousel rather than the aircraft door.

Up to two mobility devices can be checked without charge, subject to safe carriage. Arrange assistance at least 48 hours ahead and provide dimensions, weight and battery details. Smaller Air Nostrum aircraft can impose practical loading limits.

Unusual checked luggage has a separate acceptance test. Flexible, round or makeshift packages may need manual handling, special desk acceptance and an extra charge. This is a hold handling rule, not a blanket ban on using a compliant backpack as cabin baggage.

If your checked item has an unstable shape, ask before arriving at bag drop. The special baggage conditions explain acceptance and supplementary prices. Sports equipment exceeding standard dimensions also needs advance confirmation on Air Nostrum.

Before leaving for the airport

  • Check Iberia baggage allowance for each direction and every operating airline.
  • Save the ticket’s checked bag count, weight and any extra baggage receipt.
  • Measure and weigh each packed bag, including its protruding parts.
  • Move batteries, medication and documents into the small bag before any aircraft door handover.
  • Read any message asking you to drop a compliant cabin bag at the desk.
  • When handing over a bag, confirm where to collect it and keep the receipt.

Iberia baggage allowance questions

Does Iberia Basic include a carry-on?

Yes. On Iberia Group flights, Basic includes one cabin bag up to 56 x 40 x 25 cm and 10 kg. You can also bring one personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

Can I bring a backpack and a suitcase on Iberia?

Yes, if the suitcase meets the main cabin limit and the backpack fits the personal item limit. A large backpack can instead use the main bag allowance. That doesn’t create room for another full size suitcase.

Does Iberia weigh carry-on bags?

Iberia can check both dimensions and weight, including at the gate. Economy and Premium Economy main bags must stay within 10 kg. Pack to the limit rather than relying on a previous flight without checks.

Does Premium Economy always include two checked bags?

No. The current fare comparison lists one for Optimal and Executive, and two for Comfort and Flexible. Country variations and your ticket’s baggage entry still need checking.

Will Air Nostrum return my roller at the aircraft?

Its published procedure returns a main bag up to 10 kg at the aircraft after carriage in the hold. Follow staff instructions if the collection point changes. Keep essentials and batteries with you before handing the bag over.

Is 32 kg the normal Iberia checked baggage allowance?

No. A standard piece is 23 kg with combined dimensions up to 158 cm. A purchased heavier option or eligible benefit can allow up to 32 kg per ordinary checked bag.
