Emirates Baggage Allowance: Cabin Sizes and Checked Bags

One cabin bag or two? Compare Emirates' cabin classes, checked weight and piece systems, route exceptions and practical packing examples.

Emirates baggage allowance in Economy includes one cabin bag up to 55 x 38 x 22 cm and 7 kg. Premium Economy raises that bag’s weight to 10 kg. Checked baggage uses either a total weight allowance or a set number of pieces, depending on your journey.

The detail most likely to upset your packing plan is the laptop bag. Economy does not promise a separate personal item alongside your cabin bag. Put your laptop, documents and smaller pouch inside your one permitted piece.

The main cabin dimensions equal approximately 21.7 x 15 x 8.7 inches. Use centimeters when comparing a borderline bag. Rounded inch labels can hide a small but significant difference.

Emirates’ cabin baggage rules also limit Economy and Premium Economy passengers boarding in India to one piece within 115 cm combined dimensions. The page explicitly excludes Business and First from that India restriction.

A 55 x 38 x 22 cm bag totals exactly 115 cm. That does not make 60 x 35 x 20 cm an equivalent permitted shape. Check each standard dimension as well as India’s combined limit.

A backpack can be your cabin bag

You don’t need a wheeled suitcase. A backpack is an option if its packed shape and weight meet your allowance. Its capacity in liters does not establish compliance.

A laptop backpack and a roller are still two pieces, even when their combined weight is below 7 kg. Reports of two bags passing a gate do not create a second included piece. Choose a setup you can consolidate without unpacking on the floor.

For a laptop trip, our travel backpack guide explains the tradeoffs between storage, structure and empty weight. Check the actual model’s dimensions before deciding it fits.

Business allowance does not mean two cabin rollers

The two pieces have specified categories and different measurements. A briefcase plus a permitted handbag or garment bag is the published combination. Two large rollers do not become compliant just because each weighs 7 kg.

If you accept an upgrade offer, read its baggage terms before changing your packing. Promotional offers and mixed cabin journeys need their own confirmation. A more comfortable seat alone is insufficient evidence of a revised allowance.

Make the 7 kg limit work before buying another bag

Check Emirates baggage allowance against the bag when it is fully packed. Include wheels, fixed handles and filled outer pockets when measuring. Close the expansion zip before taking your final measurements.

Hypothetical packing budget: a 2.8 kg empty roller leaves 4.2 kg for its contents under a 7 kg limit. A 1.8 kg laptop reduces that remaining space on the scale to 2.4 kg. Chargers, clothes and toiletries must all fit within that remainder.

This calculation is a planning example, not a measured product test. Substitute your own bag and laptop weights. A smaller empty bag can be more useful than a larger one with the same permitted dimensions.

Our carry-on luggage buying guide explains how to compare external measurements and empty weight. Avoid choosing a case solely because its listing says international cabin size.

Keep your essential pouch inside the main bag during the allowance check. Once seated, take out the items you need and stow everything as instructed. An underseat location does not turn that pouch into a separately included personal item.

Checked baggage: read kilograms and pieces differently

Emirates baggage allowance has two checked systems. A weight allowance is a shared total across your bags. A piece allowance assigns a separate limit to each included bag.

The official checked baggage page explains which system applies. Read the baggage line on your ticket before buying a suitcase or splitting your packing.

Two packing examples showing a 30 kg total allowance split across bags and two 23 kg pieces with separate limits
Original packing examples: equal total weight can produce different results under the two systems.

Weight concept: a total you can divide between bags

Cabin or Economy fareStandard total checked weight
Economy Special20 kg
Economy Saver25 kg, with specified 30 kg exceptions
Economy Flex30 kg
Economy Flex Plus35 kg
Premium Economy35 kg
Business40 kg
First50 kg

This system applies on most routes outside the Americas and Africa. Economy Saver includes 30 kg on qualifying journeys originating in Australia or New Zealand. Journeys originating in Europe to Australia or New Zealand also receive 30 kg on tickets issued from July 5, 2024.

Each bag must stay within 32 kg and 203 cm combined length, width and height. A 40 kg allowance therefore cannot all go in one case. The total entitlement and the individual bag ceiling are separate rules.

Hypothetical 30 kg ticket: two cases weighing 18 kg and 12 kg use the total exactly. Cases weighing 18 kg and 14 kg exceed it by 2 kg. Adding a second case does not add more kilograms to the ticket.

Piece concept: check every bag separately

Cabin or fareAmericas and Africa standard allowance
Economy SpecialOne piece up to 23 kg
Economy Saver, Flex and Flex PlusTwo pieces up to 23 kg each
Premium EconomyTwo pieces up to 23 kg each
Business and FirstTwo pieces up to 32 kg each

Saver exception: flights within the Americas and between the United States and Europe include only one 23 kg piece in Economy Saver. Special also includes one. Flex and Flex Plus include two.

For current tickets, the piece system applies both to and from Africa. Tickets issued before August 9, 2021 have different rules for travel into Africa. Reissued or unusual older tickets deserve a direct booking check.

The standard size per piece is 150 cm combined dimensions. Larger cases below the published maximum can incur oversize charges. Do not apply a different airline’s common 158 cm standard to Emirates.

Hypothetical two piece ticket: 25 kg plus 21 kg totals 46 kg, but the first case exceeds its 23 kg limit. Moving 2 kg into the lighter case gives 23 kg plus 23 kg. Equal totals do not mean equal baggage outcomes.

Stopovers can change the system

A journey from Asia, Australia or New Zealand to the Americas can switch to the weight concept. Emirates lists this exception when the journey includes a European sector or a Dubai stopover exceeding 24 hours. Travel into Africa with a stopover exceeding 24 hours may also use weight rules.

That makes a route shortcut such as America always means two bags unreliable. Check the complete ticket, including stopover lengths. Read the return journey separately if its routing differs.

Extra baggage costs: identify what you are buying

Buying extra checked baggage does not increase the Economy cabin limit. On weight routes, Emirates sells additional kilograms. On piece routes, it sells additional pieces, with separate size and weight conditions.

Use Emirates’ extra baggage schedule and your booking quote together. Airport prices depend on regions, and some piece rates changed for tickets issued from September 8, 2026. Canada has its own Canadian dollar schedule.

Specific example, checked October 17, 2026Published airport rate
Weight concept, Europe to Middle East or South AsiaUSD 25 per extra kilogram
Piece concept, Americas to Europe, ticket issued on or before September 7, 2026USD 100 per additional piece
Same Americas to Europe category, ticket issued on or after September 8, 2026USD 200 per additional piece

These are examples from the airport schedule, not universal fees or advance purchase quotes. Overweight and oversized pieces can attract additional charges. Buying another piece does not make a too heavy case acceptable.

Eligible advance purchases are available up to four hours before departure. Weight purchases use 5 kg blocks, up to 50 kg extra. The service requires Emirates issued tickets and Emirates marketed and operated flights.

Weigh early enough to compare the advance quote with removing items. Check each direction and retain the purchase receipt. For US and Europe Saver journeys, confirm the actual ticket entitlement if different Emirates tables show conflicting inclusions.

Connections, partners and the gate handover

Check the operating airline for every cabin leg. An EK flight number on a partner flight does not establish Emirates operated cabin rules. A large aircraft on one leg also tells you nothing about the next operator’s allowance.

Checked baggage on a through ticket follows its applicable baggage rules. Journeys beginning in the United States with another airline first can have different terms. Separate tickets require separate checks, including collection and another bag drop where required.

For example, compare Qantas cabin baggage rules when that airline operates a connecting sector. Match your packed bag to every relevant cabin limit. Ask the desk where your checked bag is tagged through to.

If your cabin bag needs to go into the hold, settle its acceptance and any charge before boarding. Do not assume a free transfer or a standard gate fee. Ask whether you will collect it at the aircraft or baggage claim.

  1. Remove your passport, keys, essential medication and valuables.
  2. Take out power banks and spare batteries. Protect spare battery terminals from contact.
  3. Remove a smart bag’s battery and keep it in the cabin as required.
  4. Check the bag tag and keep its receipt accessible.

Power banks need more than space in the bag

Emirates permits one power bank, maximum 100 Wh, with a clearly visible capacity rating. It must travel in the cabin. Keep it in the seat pocket or a bag under the seat, never in the overhead compartment.

Using the power bank to charge a device is prohibited onboard. Charging the power bank from aircraft power is also prohibited. Permission to carry it is not permission to use it.

The current dangerous goods table requires removable smart bag batteries to be taken out, including for cabin carriage. Its battery limit is 100 Wh. Keep the removed battery accessible under the seat or in the seat pocket.

A smart bag with a battery that cannot be removed is not an acceptable workaround. Motorized rideable suitcase scooters have separate prohibitions. Check the bag’s battery design before bringing it to the airport.

Our power bank packing guide explains capacity labels and cabin packing. Apply Emirates’ stricter airline conditions to that general guidance.

Children, assistance equipment and special belongings

An infant ticket has its own checked allowance: 10 kg under weight rules or one piece up to 23 kg under piece rules. The latter has a 150 cm combined size limit. Confirm the allowance on the infant’s ticket.

The infant baggage FAQ permits an additional necessities handbag up to 5 kg and 55 x 38 x 22 cm. Stroller or carrycot cabin acceptance depends on space and the stated child seat conditions. Arrange the equipment plan before departure.

Assistance equipment has separate provisions. Emirates lists free checked carriage for a fully collapsible wheelchair and necessary braces or crutches. Battery mobility aids need advance arrangements and approval.

Use the accessible travel hub when booking, or call at least 48 hours before travel. Give the airline the equipment dimensions, weight and battery details. Do not squeeze essential equipment into an ordinary bag allowance without checking its specific provisions.

Sports gear and instruments also need an item check. An included weight total does not guarantee that an awkward object can travel in the cabin. Packaging, aircraft acceptance and handling conditions still matter.

Finally, baggage allowance does not replace security screening. Pack toiletries according to the departure and transfer rules in our liquids guide. Baby food and medically necessary liquids can have exceptions, but keep them available for inspection.

Emirates baggage allowance FAQ

Can I bring a laptop bag as well as my Economy cabin bag?

Economy provides one cabin piece, not a separate laptop bag plus a suitcase. Pack the laptop bag inside that piece and meet the 7 kg limit. Brazil departures have a 10 kg cabin exception.

Does Premium Economy include two cabin bags?

No. Premium Economy allows one cabin bag up to 55 x 38 x 22 cm and 10 kg. The Business and First allowance uses two specified bag categories.

Can I split a 30 kg checked allowance across two bags?

Yes, if your ticket uses the weight concept. Both bags together must stay within 30 kg, with each within the applicable size and individual weight limits. A piece allowance works differently.

Can one bag weigh 30 kg when my ticket includes two 23 kg pieces?

Not within the included per piece limit. Each bag has its own 23 kg ceiling. Redistribute the contents or arrange the applicable excess baggage service before travel.

Does buying extra checked baggage give me a heavier cabin bag?

No. Extra checked kilograms or pieces apply to the hold. Your cabin’s size, piece count and weight limits remain separate.

Can I use my power bank during an Emirates flight?

No. Emirates prohibits using it to charge devices and charging the bank from aircraft power. One bank up to 100 Wh may travel in the cabin, with a visible rating, outside overhead storage.

Your final packing check

Save the baggage entitlement for your exact journey, then check cabin pieces, packed dimensions and weight separately. For the hold, establish whether the ticket gives you kilograms or individual pieces. Check any stopover, partner flight and return routing before buying extra allowance.

Put the items you must remove at a gate handover within easy reach. Photograph your packed checked bag and retain its tag receipt. Those small preparations are easier at home than beside a crowded boarding queue.
