Delta Air Lines Baggage Fees

Delta baggage fees run $45 for a first checked bag and $55 for a second on domestic flights. Both drop to zero the moment a SkyMiles Amex card or Medallion status sits on the reservation. That gap is most of the story on this carrier.

Delta publishes its Delta baggage fees on its own baggage fees page. The figures hold for bags under 50 lb on Main and Comfort+ fares. Basic Economy pays the same checked bag fee as Main; the fare only limits seat choice and changes.

International routes are billed in local currency. A flight leaving Toronto or Paris shows CAD or EUR amounts instead of dollars. Delta does not publish one flat international table the way it lists domestic Delta baggage fees.

What a checked bag costs

Delta lets you enter and pay for bags in three places. The 24 hour online check-in window, the Fly Delta app, or an airport kiosk all take payment. The site does not advertise a discount for paying early, so the number stays the same wherever you enter it.

The real saving comes from avoiding the fee, not from timing it.

How to avoid the fee

Delta’s own first checked bag free page names the cards that waive Delta baggage fees. Gold, Platinum and Reserve SkyMiles American Express cards qualify, in both personal and business versions. The card must belong to the Basic Card Member on the reservation.

The SkyMiles number has to sit on the booking before check-in, not get added at the counter. Starting June 4, 2026, Basic Card Members on that same card list also get a second bag free on domestic flights. That is a change worth budgeting around if you fly Delta with a partner.

International Medallion allowance

On international Main and Comfort+ fares, Medallion members get one extra free bag over the standard allowance each way, at 50 lb. Premium Select adds up to three free bags at 50 lb each. Delta One or First goes to three free bags at 70 lb each.

These allowances extend to as many as eight companions on the same reservation. Delta notes some route exceptions for Paris and Amsterdam.

Overweight and oversize charges

A bag between 51 and 70 lb costs $100 extra. Between 71 and 99 lb the charge jumps to $200. Delta will not accept anything at 100 lb or heavier at all.

Oversize works the same way. A bag between 63 and 80 linear inches costs $200. Nothing over 80 inches is accepted, at any price.

Delta lists these bands as separate charges on its baggage fees page, so a bag that is both heavy and long risks running into both at once.

The gap between the 50 lb free line and the $100 band is where people get caught, not the price of the bag itself. A digital luggage scale at home settles the question before you leave. It costs a fraction of one overweight fee.

Active duty military

Delta’s free bag page also excludes anyone who already qualifies for free bags through active duty military status. That waiver runs separately from the credit card and Medallion benefits above. It does not stack with them, so check which one actually applies to your ticket before assuming a double waiver.

Where the surprise fees come from

Traveler reports on forums describe the same pattern again and again. A card holder expects the first bag free, but the SkyMiles number was never entered at booking. Or the flight is a codeshare operated by a partner airline, where Delta’s own waiver does not apply.

The fix is simple but easy to skip. Enter the SkyMiles number at booking, and check the operating carrier on any codeshare itinerary before assuming the Amex benefit will attach.

None of this shows up as a warning on Delta’s own site. It only shows up when a card holder gets billed and has to ask why.

How Delta compares to rivals

United and American charge the same $45 and $55 for domestic first and second bags. The fee itself is not where Delta wins or loses against them; the waiver rules are.

Frontier and Allegiant work on the opposite model. Both charge for a carry-on as well as a checked bag, and both often price cheaper overall if you skip bags entirely and pack a small personal item instead. A traveler comparing Delta baggage fees against a budget carrier should compare the whole itinerary, not just the checked bag line.

JetBlue sits closer to Delta on price but ties its own waivers to its own credit card rather than a flat Medallion table, a comparison worth checking before booking either.

The cheapest honest way to fly Delta with checked bags is to get a SkyMiles number on the reservation before check-in. That is true whether or not a fee waiver applies yet.

If a Delta trip happens more than once a year, the Gold Amex tends to pay for itself fast. Delta’s own page cites savings of up to $90 per person on a round trip.
