Etihad Airways baggage allowance: cabin bags, fares and fees

Economy allows one 7 kg cabin bag, with your laptop and purse inside. Compare checked fares, route exceptions and dated extra bag fees before packing.

Etihad Airways baggage allowance gives Economy passengers one cabin bag, up to 7 kg and 56 x 36 x 23 cm. Your laptop and handbag must fit inside that bag. Basic includes no checked baggage, while other fares add weight or pieces according to your route.

The easy mistake is packing a roller plus a separate backpack. That familiar combination is not the published Economy allowance. A second bag can cause a problem even when the two bags together weigh less than 7 kg.

Cabin baggage: count the bags before weighing them

These limits apply to flights operated by Etihad. Business, First and The Residence have a different allowance, including an additional small bag. The main premium allowance also changes on flights to or from the United States.

The main size is approximately 22 x 14.2 x 9.1 inches. Seven kilograms is about 15.4 pounds. Use the centimeter and kilogram figures when checking a close fit.

Etihad’s baggage FAQ distinguishes Economy from premium cabins. The 5 kg small bag belongs to the premium allowance. It is not an extra allowance to add to an Economy ticket.

Where does a laptop bag go?

In Economy, place the laptop sleeve, purse or document bag inside your one cabin bag before presenting it for travel. Choose a bag with easy access if you will need those items during the flight. A compact empty organizer inside the bag can keep essentials together.

Do not count on a promise that staff never check. You need to meet the piece limit, dimensions and weight at the same time. Buying Comfort or Deluxe increases checked baggage, not the standard Economy cabin allowance.

Underseat placement alone does not create another bag entitlement. Our underseat bag guide helps with bag selection, but Etihad’s Economy piece rule still applies.

Measure the suitcase you will actually bring

Pack the bag first, close the pockets and retract the handle. Measure its outermost points, including wheels, handles and bulging fabric. The size printed on a product listing may describe the shell rather than the complete suitcase.

A hypothetical 56 x 38 x 23 cm roller fails the 36 cm width limit. Its height and depth being acceptable does not cancel those extra 2 cm. Rotating the bag does not help if its sorted dimensions still exceed the permitted shape.

Leave an expansion zip closed unless the expanded measurement remains compliant. For buying decisions, compare external dimensions and empty weight in our carry-on luggage guide.

Make the 7 kg budget work before you choose Basic

Etihad Airways baggage allowance can make the bag’s empty weight more important than its advertised capacity. A large suitcase that nearly fills the size limit can still be a poor choice for a heavy laptop.

Here is a hypothetical packing budget, not a measured product test. A 2.8 kg roller leaves 4.2 kg for everything inside. Add a 1.5 kg laptop and 0.4 kg of chargers, and only 2.3 kg remains.

Swap that roller for a hypothetical 1.2 kg backpack and the same electronics leave 3.9 kg. That is 1.6 kg more room for clothes without changing the airline allowance. The backpack must still meet the dimensions when full.

Calculated examples: the bag and electronics count toward the same 7 kg limit. These are planning weights, not tested products.

Weigh your complete bag after adding the items you usually forget: the charger, medicine pouch and airport purchases. If the result is too heavy, solve it before departure. Choosing a fare with checked baggage can be more comfortable than trying to make an unsuitable cabin bag work.

Checked baggage: your route changes the system

There are two separate questions: what your fare includes, and how that allowance is divided. Most routes use total kilograms. Flights to or from the United States, Canada, Tunisia or Morocco use a piece allowance under Etihad’s current baggage FAQ.

For Tunisia and Morocco, keep the ticket’s issue date handy. Etihad’s extra baggage schedule lists differing July 2026 cutoffs. Have Etihad confirm weight or piece treatment for an older ticket before buying extra allowance.

Standard fare allowances: check your ticket for route and award exceptions

Economy Value25 kg totalTwo bags, 23 kg each
Economy Comfort30 kg totalTwo bags, 23 kg each
Economy Deluxe40 kg totalTwo bags, 23 kg each
Business Value / Comfort / Deluxe35 / 40 / 50 kg totalTwo bags, 32 kg each
First Comfort / Deluxe50 / 60 kg totalTwo bags, 32 kg each

The First figures apply to tickets issued or reissued from April 9, 2026. Etihad’s fare comparison has separate historical and GuestSeat sections. An older ticket or award booking needs its own confirmation rather than a blanket assumption from this table.

For current Tunisia and Morocco piece routes, the baggage FAQ lists two 23 kg bags in Economy, excluding Basic. Premium cabins have two 32 kg bags. Confirm the applicable system against your own ticket before buying extra kilos.

Total weight is not a heavier single suitcase

No checked bag may exceed 32 kg. A 40 kg allowance cannot travel as one 40 kg suitcase. Buying more allowance does not remove the handling limit.

On weight routes, the baggage FAQ allows multiple bags within the total. However, the calculator can display one piece alongside the weight. If your ticket specifies a piece count, ask Etihad to confirm your intended split before arriving.

On piece routes, two 23 kg bags are separate allowances. Packing 28 kg in one and 18 kg in the other does not make the first bag compliant. Repacking to 23 kg each would address the individual weight problem, assuming both bags otherwise qualify.

Checked dimensions need their own check

Etihad’s route calculator shows checked dimensions of 90 x 72 x 45 cm for ordinary luggage on the sample routes Abu Dhabi to London and New York. That is approximately 35.4 x 28.3 x 17.7 inches. Check your selected route and ticket before buying a large case.

Do not replace those individual measurements with a generic 158 cm airline rule. Nor should a special equipment limit be treated as the standard suitcase allowance. For sports gear or an instrument, check its category and notify Etihad when required.

Basic versus a baggage fare: compare the whole trip

Basic has no included checked allowance. Etihad Guest free checked baggage benefits also do not apply on Basic. Membership therefore does not fix a Basic ticket’s missing checked bag.

Compare Basic plus the actual baggage quote against Value, Comfort and Deluxe. Include the return journey and every passenger who needs a bag. A cheap outbound price can hide a much larger total once both directions are included.

Use a simple comparison: fare price plus baggage purchase equals your total price with baggage. If one option includes more flexibility or seating benefits, consider whether you need them. Do not buy a more expensive fare solely because its cabin bag sounds larger; Economy still has one 7 kg bag.

For eligible higher fares, extra Etihad Guest allowance depends on tier and benefit selection. Confirm that it appears in the booking. Do not assume that joining the program automatically adds free weight.

Extra baggage fees and the purchase deadline

There is no single Etihad excess baggage price per kilogram for every journey. Weight routes use regional pricing, while piece routes sell bags. Use Manage your booking for the actual quote before paying.

For a useful reference, Etihad’s United States and Canada airport schedule lists these rates. They are airport prices for additional pieces, not guaranteed online offers or a universal fee for an overweight included bag.

Additional bag airport rates, United States and Canada, in USD
Ticket issuedAdditional bag up to 23 kgAdditional bag up to 32 kg
On or after April 23, 2026USD 260USD 300
Before April 23, 2026USD 200USD 250

The extra baggage schedule offers advance discounts of up to 65%. Its discounted purchase deadlines differ: up to four hours before departure on weight bookings, and 30 hours on piece bookings. The maximum advertised saving is not a promise for your journey.

Do not wait until four hours before a United States flight expecting the piece discount. Buy against the correct booking and direction, then save the receipt. Prepaid baggage is generally not refundable unless Etihad changes or cancels the flight.

Connections and partner flights: read the operator line

An EY flight number does not always mean an Etihad aircraft. Check the airline named after “operated by” for every segment. The operating airline’s cabin rules can differ even when your checked baggage travels through.

For a separate onward booking, compare that airline before packing. Our Air India baggage guide and Qatar Airways guide can help with those specific journeys. Neither airline’s allowance transfers automatically to an Etihad ticket.

One ticket can also contain different baggage details by segment. Ask which checked rule governs the itinerary and inspect the booking confirmation. For United States itineraries, Etihad explains that the first airline determines which applicable baggage policy governs.

At bag drop, read the airport code on the bag tag. Ask whether you must collect the bag during transit and where to do so. A through tag does not remove every country’s customs collection requirement.

Aircraft matters when you need storage for unusual items or medical equipment. Do not assume the same cabin space on every connection. Ask Etihad about your specific item rather than treating the standard suitcase dimensions as approval for everything.

Children, strollers and mobility equipment

Infants have a separate cabin allowance: one 5 kg piece. The calculator shows 39 x 23 x 19 cm for that item. Do not assume it is another adult roller at the full cabin dimensions.

Etihad’s family guidance gives infants 23 kg checked on United States and Canada routes, or 10 kg elsewhere. Basic excludes that checked allowance. One pushchair, carrycot or car seat can travel free.

Confirm how an attached stroller and car seat combination will be treated. Ask where staff will take the stroller and where it will return. The free equipment allowance does not promise that every stroller can remain in the cabin.

For a child aged two or older, check the allowance on the child’s ticket. Do not use the infant allowance after booking a child fare. If sharing checked allowance, Etihad requires passengers to be under the same booking reference.

Your own wheelchair or assistive device can travel in the hold free in addition to checked baggage. Arrange battery approval and handling in advance. Give Etihad the device’s size and battery details rather than adding it to a normal suitcase calculation.

The special assistance guidance sets equipment and aircraft conditions. A CPAP’s permission to travel does not by itself promise a free extra cabin piece. Confirm the device’s baggage treatment, approval requirements and power arrangements with Etihad before departure.

Power banks and a bag sent to the hold

Etihad permits only one power bank per passenger, clearly marked at 100 Wh or less. You cannot use it to charge a device onboard. You also cannot charge the power bank from an aircraft socket.

Keep it switched off, protected against short circuits and accessible. Etihad recommends avoiding overhead storage. A bag accepted at the gate for the hold must not contain power banks or loose spare batteries.

The prohibited items policy also distinguishes smart bag batteries from power banks. Smart bags need a removable battery; a battery between 100 and 160 Wh requires advance approval. That provision does not authorize a power bank above 100 Wh.

Remove the battery and carry it in the cabin as directed. Ask about approval at least seven days ahead for the smart bag category that requires it. A suitcase with a nonremovable battery is not accepted.

Our power bank packing guide explains labels and protected terminals. Apply Etihad’s stricter airline limit when a general guide describes broader aviation permissions.

If your bag exceeds the cabin limits, Etihad can require it to be checked and apply excess charges. Before handing it over, remove documents, essential medication, valuables and restricted batteries. Ask where to collect it, and retain the baggage receipt.

Security is another check entirely. From Abu Dhabi, Etihad specifies containers up to 100 ml within one transparent resealable bag totaling one liter. Use our liquids guide for packing, then check the airports on your own itinerary.

Etihad Airways baggage allowance: questions before packing

Can I take a backpack and a carry-on in Etihad Economy?

Not as two separate standard cabin pieces. Etihad Economy allows one 7 kg bag measuring no more than 56 x 36 x 23 cm. Pack your laptop bag, purse or smaller backpack inside that bag.

Does Economy Basic include any checked baggage?

No. Basic includes no checked baggage, and Etihad Guest free checked baggage benefits do not apply. Buy checked baggage separately or compare a fare that includes it.

Is Etihad Business cabin allowance 12 kg per bag?

No. The normal Business allowance is two main cabin bags weighing 12 kg combined. Flights to or from the United States allow one main bag up to 12 kg, plus the separate qualifying 5 kg small bag.

Can I put a 40 kg checked allowance in one suitcase?

No. The maximum checked weight is 32 kg per bag. Split the load into compliant bags and confirm any piece count shown on your ticket.

Can I bring a 160 Wh power bank on Etihad?

No. Etihad limits each passenger to one power bank of 100 Wh or less with a clear rating. Its separate smart bag battery approval provision does not override that power bank limit.

Your final packing check

Confirm Etihad Airways baggage allowance on the booking after any ticket change. Save the fare name, checked weight or piece count, and any purchased allowance. Check the operator for every connection.

Then count the bags, measure them packed and weigh each one. Keep the power bank accessible and gather anything you must remove if a bag goes into the hold. These checks resolve the important problems before they become an airport repack.
