Finnair carry-on size, Superlight and baggage rules

Finnair allows 55 x 40 x 23 cm cabin bags, but Economy shares 8 kg across both pieces. Check Superlight purchases, checked bags and flight operators.

Finnair carry-on size is 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.7 x 15.7 x 9.1 inches). The small bag limit is 40 x 30 x 15 cm (15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 inches). Economy and Premium Economy share an 8 kg (17.6 lb) cabin baggage limit; Business gets 12 kg (26.5 lb) combined.

Superlight is the important catch: it includes only the small bag, unless you buy the larger bag or qualify for a benefit. Even when both pieces are included, your laptop bag does not get a separate weight allowance. That second detail can decide whether your packing plan works.

Use the centimeter figures when comparing a bag measured in centimeters. Rounded inch conversions should not become extra packing room. Finnair publishes the limits in its cabin baggage policy.

Superlight, Light, Classic or Flex: what actually comes aboard?

The cabin name and fare name answer different questions. Business describes your travel class; Light describes the package of benefits. Buying a better seat does not automatically mean more pieces of luggage.

Economy SuperlightOne small bag; overhead bag costs extra8 kg / 17.6 lb

Premium Economy Light, Classic or FlexOne overhead bag and one small bag8 kg / 17.6 lb

Superlight replaces Economy Light on flights within Europe. Fare availability varies by route, so use the name on your actual ticket. The ticket comparison separates cabin baggage from checked baggage.

Paying to add an overhead bag to Superlight does not create another 8 kg allowance. You get the permitted second piece within the existing combined limit. For Light, Classic and Flex, buying another cabin piece is not an option.

That matters if you’re carrying camera equipment or a heavy work laptop. Once your permitted cabin pieces are full, buying a checked bag may solve the clothing problem. It will not make a prohibited battery safe to put in the hold.

Status can restore the overhead bag, but check whose status it is

Finnair Plus Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo include an overhead bag on European Superlight flights. The tier benefit covers Finnair and Norra services within its published conditions. It does not remove the cabin weight limit.

Don’t assume another airline’s equivalent status gives the identical Superlight benefit. Attach your membership number and confirm the benefit in your booking. Finnair lists the named tiers in its membership baggage benefits.

The 8 kg problem: weigh the whole cabin setup

Finnair carry-on size is only half the packing test. A suitcase can fit perfectly and still leave too little weight for your essentials. The useful number is the total you will bring to boarding.

Hypothetical Economy packing example: a packed roller weighs 6.1 kg and a laptop backpack weighs 2.4 kg. Their total is 8.5 kg, which is 0.5 kg over the limit. Moving the laptop from one bag to the other changes nothing.

Worked Finnair Economy example: 6.1 kg roller plus 2.4 kg backpack equals 8.5 kg, exceeding the shared 8 kg limit by 0.5 kg.
Illustrative packing arithmetic, not a measurement of a particular suitcase. Both pieces must also pass their separate size checks.

A practical fix would be removing at least 0.5 kg from the cabin load. If you have a checked allowance, move suitable clothes there before bag drop. Keep restricted batteries and anything you need during travel in the cabin.

Leave some margin rather than trying to land on exactly 8.00 kg at home. A snack purchase, charging cable or full water bottle adds weight later. Your scale also measures only what is actually sitting on it.

Compare empty luggage weight before buying: a lighter case gives you more room for belongings within the same limit. Our carry-on luggage guide explains which specifications matter. A larger advertised capacity is not automatically useful here.

Will a 22 inch suitcase or everyday backpack fit?

A suitcase sold as 22 inches needs a measurement check. Exactly 22 inches converts to 55.88 cm, above the 55 cm limit. That calculation assumes the quoted dimension already includes the whole bag.

Measure from the lowest wheel to the highest fixed point with the telescopic handle retracted. Then check width and packed depth at their widest points. Include protruding handles and filled pockets when deciding whether the entire bag fits.

Expanding a case is particularly easy to overlook. A bag measuring 55 x 40 x 25 cm exceeds the depth limit by 2 cm. Extra unused space in its width does not cancel that excess.

For a backpack, start with the smaller 40 x 30 x 15 cm allowance if it will be your personal item. A large laptop backpack may qualify only as your overhead piece. A purse carried separately would still need its own place within your permitted count.

Soft material can help only if the packed bag really stays within the permitted shape. Don’t rely on being able to flatten an overfilled pocket for a second. Compare the packed dimensions in our underseat bag guide before choosing a small bag.

Buying a Superlight cabin bag versus paying at the gate

The following euro prices are per journey in one direction. They are the published cabin bag prices checked October 17, 2026. They apply to purchasing the missing overhead piece on Economy Superlight.

Superlight overhead bag purchase options
JourneyPrepaidAt airport before check-in closes
Finland and Northern Europe€12 to €25€35
Rest of Europe€16 to €30€40

Northern Europe here means Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Online cabin bag purchases remain available until 30 minutes before departure. Confirm the actual charge in Manage booking.

The gate is a different outcome: an unpurchased, excess size or overweight cabin bag incurs a €60 charge and goes into the hold. That payment does not buy permission to keep it overhead. Finnair’s extra baggage fees distinguish these situations.

For a return trip, price both directions before comparing fares. Add a cabin bag in each direction that needs one. A cheap outbound add-on does not prove the return costs the same.

Checked baggage: route and fare matter more than the cabin label

Light fares do not include a checked bag, including Business Light and Premium Economy Light. Superlight also excludes checked baggage. Classic and Flex include bags, with the count varying by cabin and route.

North America includes the United States, Canada and Mexico. Standard checked dimensions are 90 x 75 x 45 cm externally (about 35 x 30 x 18 inches). These are individual dimensions, not a generic 158 cm sum.

The usual weight is 23 kg (50 lb), rising to 32 kg (70 lb) for the qualifying Business allowance above. Confirm Japan departures and any mixed carrier itinerary against your ticket. The checked baggage table carries those route qualifications.

Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo add one checked bag up to 23 kg on flights operated and marketed by Finnair. Silver offers a 50% discount on an extra 23 kg bag purchased while booking, through Manage booking or the app. These checked benefits are separate from the Superlight cabin benefit.

What should you budget for a paid checked bag?

Finnair updated prepaid cabin pricing on June 8, 2026, and North America checked pricing on May 18, 2026. Checked fees depend on the ticket purchase date; older tickets can use the previous schedule. Cabin bag purchases use the current price instead.

For North America and Europe tickets purchased on or after May 18, 2026, the Light first checked bag is €75 / US$85 / £70 prepaid. The airport rate is €90 / US$90 / £75. Those are directional charges for a standard bag, not a round trip total.

Use the live fee table and your booking for other routes or older tickets. Separate a charge for another piece from a surcharge for excess weight or size. You may need to address both problems.

Hypothetical fare comparison: you need a checked suitcase on both flights of a return journey. Compare the total Light fare plus both baggage purchases with Classic. Make the comparison before paying, rather than assuming the cheaper fare stays cheaper.

Do not combine two people’s weight into one heavy suitcase

Two allowances of 23 kg are two pieces, not a single 46 kg suitcase. Weigh each case individually. A bag above its weight allowance needs a different plan even when the party’s total looks fine.

Finnair treats bags above 23 kg and up to 32 kg as heavy outside applicable exceptions. Qualifying Business Classic and Flex journeys on long flights waive the heavy surcharge up to 32 kg. Unusually large equipment needs a separate acceptance check.

Connections: your ticket seller does not set every cabin rule

For carry-on baggage, follow the airline operating each flight. An American Airlines ticket does not remove Finnair’s cabin restrictions on a flight operated by Finnair. A Finnair flight number likewise does not establish another operator’s cabin allowance.

Read the words “operated by” beside every flight, especially on a connection. Compare our American Airlines guide or British Airways guide if either operates another segment. Plan a cabin setup that works across the itinerary.

Checked baggage follows a different process, including special rules for journeys to or from the United States and Canada. The first marketing airline normally determines the applicable policy there, but it can transfer the rule. Use the allowance printed on your ticket rather than applying the cabin rule to checked bags.

Finnair explains that distinction in its multiple airline baggage rules. If separate tickets are involved, confirm baggage handling with both airlines. Don’t assume an onward bag purchase covers a new booking.

Children, strollers and essential medical equipment

A child with a child’s ticket gets the same cabin allowance as an adult with that ticket type. An infant without a reserved seat has no separate cabin bag allowance. Put the infant’s necessities into the family’s packing plan before weighing everything.

For infants, Classic and Flex include one checked bag up to 23 kg; Light and Superlight do not. A stroller and safety seat can be carried free under the family rules. Finnair’s family baggage guidance explains the cabin stroller exception for Superlight.

A folding stroller taken into the cabin must meet the cabin size and weight conditions. On other fares, it counts as the overhead piece. Don’t count that space again for an ordinary roller.

Necessary mobility aids and assistive medical devices can travel in addition to the normal allowance. This covers the device, not unrelated items added to its bag. Check approval and use requirements for a CPAP or oxygen concentrator before departure.

See the medical device instructions before planning onboard use.

Gate preparation: make a bag transfer manageable

Finnair can measure cabin baggage at check-in or boarding. Packing within Finnair carry-on size does not guarantee overhead space on a full flight. Prepare for the possibility that a roller must travel in the hold.

  • Keep passports, medication, keys and valuables in an accessible small bag.
  • Use a removable pouch for power banks and spare batteries.
  • Leave room to consolidate airport shopping into your permitted bags.
  • Keep receipts and the baggage tag when a case is taken for the hold.

Finnair currently allows at most two power banks per person, up to 100 Wh each. They belong in the cabin, with protected terminals and somewhere they can be monitored. Using them to charge devices during flight, or charging them from aircraft outlets, is prohibited.

Read the airline’s restricted items rules for device exceptions. Our power bank packing guide explains battery labels and safe separation. Remove batteries that cannot go in checked baggage before surrendering a case.

Finnair baggage questions

Is the Finnair 8 kg limit per bag?

No. In Economy and Premium Economy, the overhead bag and small bag share 8 kg (17.6 lb). Business allows 12 kg (26.5 lb) combined.

Does buying a Superlight carry-on increase the weight allowance?

No. It adds the missing overhead piece, not an extra weight allowance. Your small bag and purchased overhead bag still share the Economy 8 kg limit.

Can I buy a second overhead bag on Finnair?

No. Light, Classic and Flex do not permit purchasing another cabin piece. Superlight passengers can buy the single overhead piece excluded from that fare.

Does Premium Economy get the Business cabin baggage limit?

No. Premium Economy has an 8 kg combined limit. The 12 kg combined limit applies to Business.

Does Finnair weigh carry-on baggage?

Finnair can check cabin baggage at the counter or gate. Pack to the published weight and dimensions rather than relying on another passenger’s experience.

What happens if my Finnair cabin bag is too large at boarding?

Finnair publishes a €60 charge to put a cabin bag in the hold when it exceeds the size or weight limits. The same charge applies to an overhead bag that was not included or purchased.
