Southwest status tiers: what changes in 2027

Silver, Gold and Platinum are announced for January 2027. Here is what changes and what still needs checking.

Southwest status tiers are changing on January 1, 2027. A-List becomes Silver, A-List Preferred becomes Gold, and a new Platinum tier sits above both. These are announced future changes, not the names to apply automatically to an October 2026 booking.

Southwest status tiers: the announced structure

A-List PreferredGoldRenamed existing tier
No direct equivalentPlatinumNew top tier with unlimited Companion Pass trips, subject to terms

The October 15 airline announcement also introduces milestone rewards. Members can select a reward before reaching Silver. Between Gold and Platinum, members can qualify for three Companion Pass trips.

Companion trips still have conditions

Unlimited does not mean a free standing ticket for anyone on any airline. The announced benefit involves a designated companion traveling with the member on Southwest operated flights. A seat must be available, and the program’s booking and eligibility terms apply.

Before valuing the benefit, consider who would actually travel with you and how often your schedules overlap. A generous benefit has little practical value if you rarely book matching trips. Compare the real journeys you expect to take.

Do not confuse tier points with spendable points

From January 2027, Southwest says eligible Rapid Rewards credit card purchases earn one Tier Qualifying Point per dollar. That is a qualification rule. It does not by itself establish a cash value or redemption value for your spendable points.

Do not move spending simply because a new tier name sounds more attractive. First read the qualifying thresholds, eligible purchases and benefits you would use. Compare costs and alternatives using your own travel pattern.

What should you check before your next flight?

Open your account and look at the status and benefits attached to the travel date. Then check the booking’s bag allowance. Future Southwest status tiers do not change every current baggage entitlement immediately.

Our Southwest baggage guide separates cabin bags from checked bag benefits. Use that distinction when comparing fares. A larger carry-on allowance and a free checked bag solve different packing needs.

What is still worth confirming?

Check final thresholds, transition rules and benefit terms on Southwest’s program pages. Do not assume every old benefit is unchanged because a tier was renamed. Save the terms relevant to a decision before paying for additional travel.

The Southwest status tiers update is one part of a broader program announcement. We have kept this guide focused on tiers and companion benefits. For other trip changes, browse travel updates or compare airline baggage rules.
