Turkish Airlines Baggage Allowance: Cabin & Checked Bags

The 8 kg cabin bag and 4 kg personal item have separate limits. Decode KG versus PC, domestic fares, extra baggage and current power bank restrictions.

Turkish Airlines baggage allowance starts with two separate cabin limits: an 8 kg main bag and a 4 kg personal item. In Economy, the main bag can measure 55 x 40 x 23 cm; the personal item must fit 40 x 30 x 15 cm. Business allows two main bags, each up to 8 kg, plus that same personal item.

The trap is treating those weights as one flexible allowance. A 10 kg roller and a 2 kg laptop bag don’t meet the Economy limits, even though they total 12 kg. Checked baggage needs another check altogether: your ticket may use kilograms, pieces, or a fare without an included checked bag.

These cabin allowances apply to Turkish operated flights. For a partner operated flight, check that airline separately. The official cabin baggage rules also explain tagging and what happens when a bag goes into the hold.

Pack the 8 kg roller and 4 kg personal bag separately

A laptop bag isn’t weightless just because it fits beneath a seat. Put the computer, charger, camera, documents and pouch inside before weighing it. The personal item’s 15 cm depth is easy to exceed once its front pocket is full.

A backpack can serve as your personal item if its packed shape meets the size and weight limits. A tall hiking pack doesn’t qualify simply because it’s soft. Compressible fabric helps only if the packed bag actually fits.

For bag shopping, compare exterior measurements in our underseat bag guide. The marketing name, liter capacity and empty product photograph won’t settle the fit. Check the depth with your laptop sleeve and water bottle pocket loaded.

A hypothetical packing fix

Suppose your roller weighs 9 kg and your small bag weighs 3 kg. Moving a 1 kg packing pouch into the small bag brings them to 8 kg and 4 kg. That works only if both bags still fit their respective dimensions.

Now suppose the roller weighs 10 kg and the small bag weighs 3.5 kg. Moving 2 kg solves the roller problem but creates a 5.5 kg personal item. You need to remove items, use checked baggage, or change the packing plan.

Original packing example: each Economy bag has its own ceiling. The example weights are hypothetical, not additional airline allowances.

Measure the bag after packing

Close the expansion zip and include protruding wheels, handles and filled pockets in your cabin measurement. Treat each side as a separate limit. A bag measuring 54 x 39 x 25 cm still exceeds the 23 cm depth, despite its shorter height.

Allow for the suitcase itself on the scale. As a hypothetical calculation, a 3 kg empty roller leaves 5 kg for its contents under an 8 kg ceiling. Our carry-on luggage comparison explains why empty weight deserves attention alongside dimensions.

Read your checked allowance as KG or PC

The Turkish Airlines baggage allowance printed on your ticket is more useful than a general route summary. Find the checked baggage line for each direction. Then establish whether it specifies a total weight or a number of pieces.

Ticket wordingHow to interpret itCommon mistake
30 KG, as a hypothetical ticket allowanceA total checked weight budget of 30 kgAssuming 30 kg is allowed in each suitcase
2 PC, EconomyTwo included pieces, normally up to 23 kg eachPutting 30 kg in one and 16 kg in the other
1 PC, EconomyOne included piece, normally up to 23 kgAssuming a second bag is free because it’s light
No checked baggage includedBuy an allowance if you need a hold bagReading the cabin allowance as a checked allowance

The kilogram system doesn’t impose the Economy piece system’s standard 23 kg ceiling. A hypothetical 30 KG entitlement could accommodate a 25 kg case and a 5 kg case. Neither case may exceed 32 kg, and standard size limits still apply.

Under a hypothetical 2 PC Economy allowance, two 23 kg bags meet the standard weight arrangement. A 30 kg bag and a 16 kg bag don’t become compliant through averaging. The heavier case needs repacking or the applicable overweight payment.

Domestic flights use the kilogram system. International journeys can use either arrangement, with fare and itinerary differences. Use the checked baggage calculator and conditions, then compare the result with your reservation.

EcoFly, ExtraFly and PrimeFly don’t mean the same bags everywhere

For domestic Turkish flights, EcoFly lists 15 kg, ExtraFly 20 kg and PrimeFly 25 kg in the published package table. Business is listed at 30 kg. These are checked weight allowances, separate from cabin baggage.

The domestic package comparison also lists Ercan separately with the same checked weights. Don’t carry that table across to an international connection. International branded fares explicitly leave checked entitlement dependent on route.

EcoFly can exclude checked baggage on some international journeys. It can include baggage on others. Neither “all EcoFly tickets have no checked bag” nor “international Economy always gets two bags” is a safe booking rule.

Compare the actual allowance beside each fare price before paying. A cheaper fare plus the baggage you need may cost more than the next package. Save the fare comparison and ticket baggage line, especially when your return direction differs.

Extra baggage prices: distinguish another bag from overweight

There isn’t one extra bag fee for the whole network. Route, connections, operating carrier and fare package affect the quote. Price your exact itinerary before treating an online example as your budget.

One published figure causes particular confusion: USD 80 is an overweight supplement for a purchased extra piece weighing above 23 kg and up to 32 kg on piece system routes. It is not a universal price for buying another suitcase. The underlying extra piece purchase is a separate charge.

The extra baggage purchase terms describe that distinction. They also set a 23 kg base weight for purchased extra pieces in both cabins. Business passengers should distinguish that purchased product from their included 32 kg piece allowance.

If your included Economy case is overweight, confirm its applicable supplement directly for your ticket. Don’t assume every overweight situation uses that extra piece price. The general checked baggage page flags charges above 23 kg without quoting one universal amount.

What to check before buying

  • Confirm whether the product adds kilograms or an extra piece.
  • Read its included weight and size, rather than relying on the purchase button’s label.
  • Check both directions and any stopover before comparing totals.
  • Keep the receipt alongside the ticket allowance.
  • For an itinerary involving multiple airlines, contact the sales office; online extra baggage purchase isn’t available for those trips.

Online purchases for eligible Turkish operated journeys close 60 minutes before domestic departure and 75 minutes before international departure. Those are purchase cutoffs, not recommended arrival times. Allow time for airport check-in, bag drop and any problem with the transaction.

Large checked bags can cost extra even when they’re light

Add the case’s length, width and depth to check the standard 158 cm threshold. Meeting your weight allowance doesn’t remove an oversize charge. A hypothetical 80 x 50 x 30 cm case totals 160 cm.

The oversize policy uses a separate measurement excluding wheels. It lists USD 110 for flights departing or arriving in Turkey. Journeys beyond Turkey cost USD 150.

Its examples are Istanbul to Los Angeles and Frankfurt to Los Angeles respectively.

Domestic oversize baggage is listed at TRY 1,000 per piece. These published fees can vary with itinerary and travel date; confirm your quote before paying. Bags above 292 cm total aren’t accepted as checked baggage.

A 40 kg allowance doesn’t permit one 40 kg suitcase. Split it into acceptable individual pieces. Buying more kilograms cannot override the 32 kg limit on a single checked bag.

Connections, partner flights and status benefits

For cabin bags, follow the airline actually operating each flight. A Turkish flight number doesn’t ensure a Turkish aircraft or cabin allowance. If a connection is operated by Lufthansa, compare the Lufthansa cabin rules with the same packed bags.

Checked baggage on a single interline itinerary can follow a different selection process. Turkish describes the Most Significant Carrier framework, with separate US and Canadian rules. Don’t decide whose checked allowance applies merely by choosing the longest flight yourself.

Ask which allowance covers the complete ticket and where the baggage is tagged. For separately booked tickets, confirm collection and another bag drop instead of assuming through checking. Leave enough time to complete any required arrival and departure procedures.

Star Alliance Gold adds one checked piece under the piece system or 20 kg under the weight system. Verify the recognized status and allowance on the booking. It doesn’t give an Economy passenger Business cabin baggage: the Economy main bag remains one piece up to 8 kg.

Children, strollers and medical equipment

Infants receive one cabin bag up to 8 kg in either cabin. Their additional checked allowance is normally 10 kg under the weight system or one 23 kg piece under the piece system.

EcoFly has an important exception on routes without included checked baggage. There is no additional infant checked allowance on those routes.

Strollers are accepted in the hold free of charge. The published infant rules refer to a stroller or bassinet not exceeding 115 cm. Confirm acceptance and delivery arrangements for your model before traveling; that wording isn’t a promise of cabin storage.

Keep enough feeding supplies accessible for the journey if another bag is handed over. Our guide to bringing food on a plane separates security screening from destination food restrictions. Acceptance aboard doesn’t guarantee admission through customs.

Arrange medical devices and mobility equipment before treating them as ordinary luggage. Request wheelchair assistance at least 48 hours ahead and have it confirmed in the booking. Later requests depend on available service.

For a personal respirator, POC or CPAP, the published policy requires advance contact concerning carriage or use. Onboard use can require a doctor’s certificate. Use the special assistance guidance for your equipment rather than guessing an extra bag exemption.

If the roller is taken for the hold

A compliant cabin bag may be taken at check-in on a busy flight without an extra fee. An oversized or otherwise noncompliant, untagged bag discovered at boarding can attract payment. These are different situations, so ask what charge applies and retain the baggage receipt.

Don’t plan around accounts of bags that weren’t weighed. A previous flight’s relaxed check doesn’t change your entitlement. Show your cabin bag to staff for tagging when required.

Before handing it over, remove passports, medication, valuables, power banks and spare batteries. Keep them in your permitted personal bag. Ask where the roller will be returned rather than assuming it will appear beside the aircraft.

Turkish’s current power bank rule is especially restrictive

You can carry up to two power banks, each no more than 100 Wh, in the cabin only. Power banks above 100 Wh are prohibited under the current dedicated rule. A generic 160 Wh spare battery allowance doesn’t override it.

Protect terminals against short circuits and keep power banks beneath the seat or in the seat pocket, not overhead. You cannot recharge them or use them to charge devices during the flight. Keep wireless power banks switched off and separated from phones to prevent accidental charging.

Read the current restricted items table for unusual battery equipment. Our power bank packing guide explains capacity labels. Use the Turkish limits above for this airline.

For toiletries, check your departure and transfer airport requirements separately from bag dimensions. Our liquids guide covers container limits and packing. A compliant suitcase doesn’t make its contents automatically acceptable.

Final packing check before leaving home

  1. Read the operating carrier and checked allowance for every flight direction.
  2. Measure both packed cabin bags and weigh them independently.
  3. Count checked pieces or add their weights according to the ticket’s system.
  4. Check each checked bag’s weight and three dimensions.
  5. Price any extra allowance against the exact itinerary and save the receipt.
  6. Keep essential items and permitted batteries accessible if the roller is taken.

Turkish Airlines baggage allowance questions

Can I take a backpack and a carry-on on Turkish Airlines?

Yes, in Economy you can take one main cabin bag up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg. A backpack can be your separate personal item if it fits 40 x 30 x 15 cm and weighs no more than 4 kg.

Is Turkish Airlines’ Economy cabin allowance 8 kg or 12 kg?

It is an 8 kg main bag plus a separate personal item up to 4 kg. Those limits aren’t pooled: a 10 kg roller and 2 kg personal item don’t meet the rules.

Does Business Class allow a single 16 kg cabin bag?

No. Business permits two main cabin bags up to 8 kg each, with a 16 kg combined ceiling. It also allows one personal item up to 4 kg.

Can I put 30 kg in one checked suitcase?

Possibly, if your ticket uses a weight allowance that covers it. Under an Economy piece allowance, a 30 kg bag exceeds the standard 23 kg weight and can attract an overweight charge. No individual checked bag may exceed 32 kg.

Does EcoFly include checked baggage?

It depends on the route. Domestic EcoFly lists 15 kg, while international EcoFly can include checked baggage or exclude it. Read the allowance on your exact ticket.

Can I bring a 150 Wh power bank?

No. Turkish’s current dedicated power bank rule prohibits units above 100 Wh. It permits up to two units at or below 100 Wh, carried in the cabin with no onboard use or recharging.
