JetBlue carry-on size, personal items and baggage rules

Measure both cabin bags, match the baggage allowance to your fare and booking date, and budget checked bags for each direction.

JetBlue carry-on size is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, including wheels and handles. You also get one personal item, up to 17 x 13 x 8 inches. Both are included on every fare, even the cheapest one.

The trap is assuming that a free cabin bag also means a free checked bag. JetBlue’s checked allowance changes with your route, fare, booking date and benefits. Overhead space is another separate question, so pack your smaller bag for a possible separation from your suitcase.

The limits apply to the whole bag, not just its storage compartment. Count wheels, fixed handles and packed outside pockets. See the official cabin baggage rules before choosing your luggage.

A backpack can be either piece. Its job depends on its packed dimensions and where you store it. Carrying a roller, a backpack and a separate purse usually means three ordinary pieces; consolidate the purse before boarding.

Two independent JetBlue bag tests: carry-on up to 22 by 14 by 9 inches for the overhead bin; personal item up to 17 by 13 by 8 inches under the seat. Check every dimension separately.
Each bag has its own limit. Spare room in one dimension does not compensate for excess in another.

Measure at home without relying on the luggage label

  1. Pack the bag exactly as you will fly. Close the expansion zipper unless you intend to use it.
  2. Retract the telescoping handle, then include any handle that still protrudes.
  3. Measure the farthest outside points in all three directions. Two straight books or boxes help define the edges.
  4. Check the backpack again with its laptop, bottle and jacket inside. A bulging pocket can change its depth.

Hypothetical fit check: a suitcase measuring 21 x 14 x 10 inches exceeds the permitted 9-inch depth. Its shorter height does not cancel that extra inch. Closing an expansion panel helps only if the packed bag then meets every limit.

Bag descriptions such as cabin approved or 22 inch aren’t enough. Our carry-on luggage comparisons explain why overall dimensions matter more than the model name.

Blue Basic, Main Base and the booking date

Don’t upgrade just to obtain a cabin bag. The current Main Base fare includes one, with a personal item, and cabin storage remains subject to available space.

For bookings made July 29, 2026 or earlier, JetBlue directs travelers to its previous fare terms. Those use names such as Blue Basic. Match your confirmation to the right fare table instead of translating an old label into a new one yourself.

JetBlue’s current fare comparison links to those earlier terms. Its current carry-on policy covers all fares. That makes old advice saying Blue Basic never permits an overhead bag unsafe to use for today’s packing decision.

Selected routes with the listed first bag inclusion serve Cartagena, Guayaquil, Medellin, Port-au-Prince, Georgetown, Barranquilla and Cali. Base fare exceptions still matter. Save the actual baggage line for your reservation rather than relying on the word international.

Checked bags: plan the size before the fee

A standard checked bag can measure up to 62 linear inches, or 157.48 cm. That means length plus width plus height, including protruding parts. The usual weight limit is 50 lb, or 22.68 kg.

Hypothetical calculation: a packed case measuring 28 x 19 x 13 inches totals 60 linear inches. It passes that size test, but a weight of 52 lb still creates a separate problem. Passing one test doesn’t waive the other.

Some premium included bags have a higher allowance: the current fee chart lists up to 70 lb, or 32 kg, for BlueFirst and Mint included bags. Use the specific fare allowance, especially with Base fares.

For ordinary checked bags, oversize and overweight charges can stack. The current schedule lists USD $150 for the overweight category and USD $150 for the oversized category. These are additional charges, not a replacement for any ordinary bag fee.

Bags above 80 linear inches or 99 lb are not accepted under the ordinary limits. Flights involving the Dominican Republic, Haiti or Port of Spain have stricter excess bag restrictions. Ecuador also has a two checked bag limit; some other destinations have seasonal quantity limits.

Check the checked bag requirements and destination restrictions before packing an unusually large load. A payment option is not proof that every size or weight can travel.

JetBlue checked bag fees: timing and route matter

The examples below are per person, per bag, each way, for standard bags without an applicable waiver. Prices were checked October 17, 2026. They apply when bags are added more than 24 hours before departure.

Published advance checked bag fees in USD
Route and fareOff peak: first / secondPeak: first / second
U.S., Latin America, Caribbean and Canada: Main family and chargeable EvenMore bags$45 / $59$49 / $69
Transatlantic: Main Base and EvenMore Base$75 / $109$85 / $119
Transatlantic: Main, Main Flex, EvenMore and EvenMore FlexIncluded / $109Included / $119

Later purchases cost more; advance savings are up to USD $10 per bag. Transatlantic charges also have separate GBP and EUR schedules. Use JetBlue’s live fee table and peak calendar for your departure currency and date.

December caution: the official pages disagree for December 1 to 16, 2026. The checked bag page lists all December as peak; the fee page starts December 17. Confirm those dates in your reservation before budgeting the lower price.

Price the outbound and return separately

Hypothetical domestic example: one chargeable first bag on an off peak outbound costs USD $45 in advance. A peak return adds USD $49. That is USD $94 for the trip, using the table above and assuming no benefit applies.

Don’t simply double the first price shown. Check the return date and set a reminder to add that bag before its own advance deadline. A later return can fall in a different peak block.

Compare the complete ticket cost when choosing a transatlantic fare. Add the baggage you actually need to each option before weighing seat selection or flexibility. A more expensive fare can be better value, but an included bag is only useful if you would otherwise buy it.

Pay for bags you expect to use. If you take the flight but leave a prepaid bag at home, its fee is not refundable. Refund eligibility when you cancel the booking is a different question.

Which benefits can remove a checked bag charge?

The current fee table lists one included checked bag for Mosaic 1 and two for Mosaic 2 through 4. Eligible Plus or Premier card benefits include a first checked bag for the cardmember and up to three travelers on the same itinerary. The card waiver applies to flights operated by JetBlue, with eligibility conditions.

Confirm that your TrueBlue number and benefit appear on the reservation before paying. Don’t add two overlapping first bag benefits together and assume they create a second free bag. Ask JetBlue to resolve a missing allowance before completing the purchase.

Military baggage benefits depend on the eligible traveler and type of travel. Use the military customer information and have the required documents ready. A military discount and a baggage entitlement aren’t interchangeable.

If the overhead bins fill up

A bag can meet JetBlue carry-on size and still travel in the hold. Space availability is part of the cabin allowance. Don’t interpret a successful size check as a guarantee that your roller will stay beside you.

If staff collect it, ask where you’ll receive it and check the destination on the bag tag. Keep the receipt. Avoid assuming that it will come back on the jet bridge, especially on a connecting trip.

Before handing it over, remove passports, essential medication, valuables and anything you need during the journey. Spare lithium batteries and power banks must stay out of checked baggage. Our power bank packing guide explains the battery rules.

Use a removable essentials pouch inside your suitcase. Moving one pouch into your personal item is easier than unpacking a roller during boarding. Leave enough space in the smaller bag for it before leaving home.

An oversized bag is a different situation from a compliant bag collected because space is unavailable. Don’t plan to dodge checked bag charges by arriving with luggage that fails the cabin limits. Ask staff what charge applies before accepting a new bag payment.

Children, medical equipment and unusual pieces

A lap infant may bring a diaper bag, stroller and car seat, but has no separate checked bag allowance. A child with a purchased ticket gets the bags included with that ticket. Strollers and child safety seats have separate concessions; playpens, wagons and infant beds count as checked luggage.

Confirm how to hand over and retrieve the stroller before boarding. Keep feeding supplies and a change of clothes in the accessible bag. The lap infant baggage rules separate these concessions from an ordinary suitcase allowance.

Assistive devices required for a disability are additional to the normal carry-on allowance. Battery equipment needs its own acceptance check. Contact the airline with the device type and battery details rather than trying to fit necessary equipment inside an ordinary personal item allowance.

A musical instrument can use your carry-on place if it can be safely stowed and space is available. It isn’t automatically an extra third piece. Large instruments may need a purchased seat or a checked transport arrangement under the contract’s special item conditions.

If your personal item is a pet carrier

An approved pet carrier uses your personal item place. It doesn’t create a third ordinary cabin bag. Plan to put your other small belongings inside your carry-on.

For travelers without a pet, a compact backpack can keep essentials together. Our underseat bag guide helps distinguish usable capacity from an oversized packed profile.

Connections and partner flights need another check

Find the operating carrier on every segment, even if the booking was sold by JetBlue. Its aircraft and cabin policy can affect what fits. A checked bag benefit also may not transfer to a codeshare or partner operation.

Read the baggage allowance on your confirmation for the complete itinerary. Then compare cabin limits for the flights you will actually board. Use our American baggage guide or United cabin baggage rules where those airlines operate a segment.

With separate tickets, plan the bag allowance and airport handling for each booking. Ask whether collection and a new bag drop are required. Leave enough connection time if you must retrieve checked luggage and return through security.

Before you leave for the airport

  • Check JetBlue carry-on size against the packed outside measurements of both bags.
  • Save your fare name, booking date and baggage allowance with your confirmation.
  • Check each direction’s peak dates and add required checked bags before the advance deadline.
  • Weigh checked luggage and confirm any destination restrictions.
  • Keep documents, medication and removable batteries accessible if the roller is collected.
  • Check your security liquids allowance separately from the airline bag allowance.

JetBlue baggage questions

Can I bring a backpack and a carry-on on JetBlue?

Yes. The backpack must fit the personal item limit of 17 x 13 x 8 inches and go under the seat. Your separate carry-on must meet the 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit.

Is there a JetBlue carry-on weight limit?

JetBlue publishes no cabin bag weight limit. You should be able to lift the bag into the overhead bin if assistance isn’t available.

Does Main Base include a carry-on?

Yes. Current Main Base includes one carry-on and one personal item, subject to size and storage rules. A checked suitcase is a separate allowance.

Can a 24-inch suitcase be a JetBlue carry-on?

A bag whose packed outside length is 24 inches exceeds the 22-inch limit. Measure the actual case, including wheels and handles, rather than relying on the name printed on its label.

Are checked bag fees charged both ways?

Yes, when the bags are chargeable. Calculate the outbound and return separately because peak dates, fares or benefits can differ.
