United Airlines baggage allowance: cabin, checked and fees

United bag rules explained by fare, route and operating airline, with current Basic Economy starting fees and practical packing examples.

United Airlines baggage allowance starts with your fare, then your bag. Most tickets include a carry-on up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches and a personal item up to 17 x 10 x 9 inches. Basic Economy usually includes only the personal item, with important route and traveler exceptions.

A roller can meet every size limit and still be excluded from your fare. A backpack can fit an overhead bin and still be too large for your personal allowance. Settle both questions before packing, especially if your itinerary includes United Express or another airline.

The official cabin bag policy includes handles and wheels in the measurements. The centimeter figures are United’s published rounded values. Use one unit system throughout your comparison rather than converting rounded numbers back and forth.

Does your United fare include an overhead bag?

Standard Economy generally includes one carry-on and one personal item. Basic Economy is the fare that needs closer attention. The word “economy” on a seat map does not tell you enough about your bag entitlement.

How to check cabin entitlement before choosing a bag
Your situationPractical answer
Most United fares above Basic EconomyOne compliant carry-on plus one personal item, subject to space and aircraft restrictions.
Basic Economy on most tripsOne personal item only. A larger bag must be checked for the applicable fee.
Basic Economy to South America, across the Atlantic or across the PacificUnited lists an exception allowing a carry-on. Check the baggage details for your complete itinerary.
Basic Economy with qualifying traveler benefitsPremier status, travel with a Premier member, Star Alliance Gold or an eligible primary cardholder benefit may restore the carry-on.
A flight operated by CommutAirOnly one personal item is allowed in the cabin. Plan to hand over the roller.

International does not automatically mean a free carry-on in Basic Economy. A short flight across a national border is different from a qualifying ocean crossing. Check the listed baggage allowance before applying the South America, Atlantic or Pacific exception.

Credit card exceptions also have boundaries. United specifically excludes the United Gateway Card and United MileagePlus Select Card from the Basic Economy carry-on benefit. A card logo, membership number or early boarding anecdote is not enough to establish eligibility.

Paying for a checked bag does not buy cabin access

If your Basic Economy fare excludes a roller, prepaying for a bag buys checked transport. You must drop that bag before security using the proper airport process. The payment does not turn it into an overhead bag.

If you want to keep the roller with you, compare the offered cost of moving to standard Economy. Confirm that the fare itself changes and that the baggage summary now includes a carry-on. A seat selection purchase alone is not evidence that the restriction disappeared.

Measure all three dimensions, especially the personal item

The personal item is where otherwise careful packing can go wrong. United’s 10 inch width is much narrower than many bags sold as “underseat luggage.” A store’s category name is not an airline approval.

Each side has its own limit. The smaller bag does not gain extra width just because it has less depth.

Pack the bag first, close every zipper, then measure the greatest outside points. Include fixed handles, wheels, feet and filled outer pockets. A hard case cannot lose an inch at the gate; a soft bag only helps if its packed shape actually fits.

Hypothetical bag checks using overall packed measurements
Bag measurementsResult against United’s limitsWhat to change
Roller: 22 x 14 x 9 inMeets the published carry-on dimensions exactly.Confirm your fare allows it. Avoid expanding it after measurement.
Expanded roller: 22 x 14 x 11 inTwo inches too deep for the carry-on limit.Close the expansion section and measure again, or plan to check it.
Backpack: 18 x 14 x 8 inToo long and too wide for a personal item, despite being thinner than 9 inches.Choose a smaller bag or use it as your carry-on if the fare permits.
Small bag: 17 x 10 x 9 inMeets the published personal dimensions. It must also stow safely under the seat ahead.

Do not add the cabin dimensions together and treat the total as a flexible allowance. A narrower case does not earn extra height. Our carry-on luggage comparison explains how to distinguish case dimensions from overall dimensions.

For Basic Economy travel with one bag, prioritize a compact shape and useful access over maximum liters. Keep your documents reachable without unloading the whole bag. Compare actual specifications in the underseat bag guide rather than buying by the label alone.

Is there a United carry-on weight limit?

United does not publish a general cabin weight cap on its main carry-on page. That does not make every United journey weight unrestricted. Its current contract specifies 25 lb / 11.3 kg for carry-on baggage departing Yap, Federated States of Micronesia.

A partner flight can also have its own cabin weight limit. Pack for every operating airline on the ticket, and keep the roller manageable. Space and safe stowage still apply even where no general weight figure is listed.

Checked bags: weight, included pieces and the right fee

The standard checked size is 62 linear inches, or 158 cm. Add the greatest outside length, width and height, including wheels and handles. For example, a hypothetical 30 x 20 x 12 inch bag totals 62 inches.

Do not confuse that size threshold with a free checked allowance. United Airlines baggage allowance can include different checked pieces for different fares and routes. Use the ticket’s bag summary to establish how many are included, then check the weight limit per piece.

Published checked weight allowances
Cabin or benefitMaximum weight per standard bag
Economy or premium economy, without a higher qualifying benefit50 lb / 23 kg
United Business, United First or Polaris business class70 lb / 32 kg
MileagePlus Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum or 1K70 lb / 32 kg
Star Alliance Gold50 lb / 23 kg in Economy; 70 lb / 32 kg in Business

United uses the more generous qualifying cabin or MileagePlus weight limit. Star Alliance Gold should not be confused with United Premier Gold: the published Economy weight differs. A larger weight allowance does not expand the standard 62 inch size limit.

Why one flat “United checked bag fee” is misleading

Your route, fare, ticket purchase date, payment timing and benefits can change the charge. The United baggage fee calculator is the useful price check. Enter the real itinerary and ticket date, including the return journey.

The purchase date matters because United’s 2026 changes did not all begin together. Domestic and certain nearby international fees changed for tickets bought from April 3. Many longer international routes changed from May 12.

Another change applies to tickets bought from July 21 for specified Asia markets. Those include US flights involving Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, plus flights between countries in Asia. An old screenshot may belong to a different ticket date or market.

Basic Economy bag charges published as starting prices, in USD
Ticket purchase datePrepaidAirport lobbyGate
Before April 3, 2026From $35From $40From $65
On or after April 3, 2026From $45From $50From $75

These are United’s published Basic Economy starting charges for bags that must be checked. They are not a worldwide first and second checked bag tariff. Your actual price can differ, and the $75 starting gate total is not a $75 surcharge to add again.

A practical fare comparison before booking

Hypothetical example: assume a domestic Basic Economy round trip bought after April 3, 2026, with no bag benefit. Suppose its calculator quotes the starting $45 prepaid price for one bag each direction. That makes $90 in round trip baggage charges.

If standard Economy costs $70 more and includes your compliant roller, the fare upgrade is $20 cheaper in this example. If you need a large checked case on either fare, that comparison changes. Price the same packing plan on both fares instead of comparing their headline ticket prices.

Extra pieces, overweight and oversize charges can stack. Paying an overweight charge does not remove an oversize charge. Some routes also have baggage embargoes, so a bag may be prohibited rather than accepted for more money.

United Express, partner flights and gate checks

Three different situations can put your bag in the hold. Knowing which one applies helps you prepare and understand the charge.

  1. Space runs out: your fare includes a compliant bag, but the cabin cannot hold it. Follow the agent’s instructions and ask where to collect it.
  2. The aircraft has limited storage: CommutAir permits only a personal item. Other United Express operators allow carry-ons but have limited space.
  3. Your bag exceeds the rules: it is too large, an extra piece, or excluded by your fare. Applicable checked and gate charges may follow.

A free space related gate check is not a reliable way around Basic Economy restrictions. Arrange the required checked service before security. Otherwise you may pay the higher gate price and still lose cabin access to the bag.

For most United flights, a gate bag is collected at final baggage claim. On United Express, collection may be at baggage claim or the jet bridge. Ask before walking away from the agent, and read the tag rather than assuming the next connection is covered.

When the ticket says United but another airline operates

Open every segment and find “operated by.” A United flight number does not guarantee United’s cabin bag dimensions on a partner aircraft. Check the operating carrier’s cabin rules, including any weight limit.

Checked fees on a partner itinerary are a separate question. United notes that the first operating carrier can determine fees, with an exception possible for a United marketed first flight. Card and Premier fee waivers may not apply on the partner.

For a connection, compare the Lufthansa baggage guide or Air Canada baggage rules where relevant. Use the checked allowance shown on the ticket alongside those cabin restrictions. Do not assume a larger United bag must be accepted throughout a mixed journey.

Children, medical equipment and extra cabin items

A small purse is not a third general purpose bag. Put it inside your allowed personal item before boarding if you also have a roller. United does list useful exceptions, including a coat, umbrella, reading material and limited airport purchases.

A diaper bag and breast pump are listed separately from the normal cabin allowance, even without your child traveling. This is not permission to turn any extra backpack into a diaper bag. All items still need safe stowage.

A child with a purchased seat receives the allowance appropriate to that seat. United also allows one car seat plus one stroller or folding wagon for each accompanied child to be checked free. Do not assume a lap infant automatically creates another adult suitcase allowance; international infant fares have their own conditions.

Assistive devices such as wheelchairs, canes and crutches are not ordinary excess luggage. The contract excludes qualifying assistive devices from normal checked charges. Prescription medicines and devices needed to administer them also have cabin exceptions.

Arrange assistance before travel if the device is large or battery powered. Device acceptance, battery handling and the aircraft’s physical capacity need separate confirmation. The baggage provisions in United’s contract cover these exceptions and special items.

Pack so a last minute bag handover is manageable

Keep a small essentials pouch inside your personal item. Put your passport, keys, medication, valuables and a charging cable there. It should be easy to separate from the roller while standing at the gate.

Power banks and spare lithium batteries need cabin handling even when the suitcase goes into the hold. Follow the capacity and protection rules in our power bank packing guide. Tell the agent if a smart bag has a battery that cannot be removed.

Security permission does not settle the airline’s bag entitlement. A toiletry bag can pass the checkpoint while your suitcase still exceeds Basic Economy’s allowance. Check cabin liquids and container limits before packing, particularly when connecting through another country.

  • Confirm the fare name, operating airlines and both travel directions.
  • Measure the packed roller and personal item separately.
  • Check included checked pieces and weight, then price anything extra.
  • Remove old bag tags and add current contact details.
  • Meet the airport’s actual bag drop cutoff; a prepaid bag still needs to be accepted on time.
  • Keep the claim receipt until every checked bag is back with you.

United baggage questions

Can I take a backpack and a carry-on on United?

Usually yes if your fare includes a carry-on. The backpack must fit within 17 x 10 x 9 inches as your personal item. Most Basic Economy trips allow only that personal item unless a route or traveler exception applies.

Can I bring a 24 inch suitcase as a carry-on?

A suitcase measuring 24 inches overall exceeds United’s 22 inch carry-on length limit. Check the actual packed measurements rather than the model name. Plan to check it if it exceeds the limit.

Is a checked bag free on a United international flight?

There is no single free allowance for every international fare and route. Check the included pieces on your ticket and use United’s calculator for any extra bag. A cabin bag exception does not prove that a checked suitcase is included.

Does United weigh carry-on bags?

The main carry-on page does not publish a general weight cap. United’s contract does specify 25 lb / 11.3 kg for cabin bags departing Yap. Partner airlines can also impose their own weight rules.

Does a carry-on benefit guarantee overhead space?

No. United can check a bag when overhead space is unavailable or it cannot be stowed safely. United Express aircraft can have additional storage limits, so keep essentials accessible.

How do I confirm United Airlines baggage allowance for my booking?

Check your ticket’s bag details, fare name and operating airline for every segment. Use the actual ticket purchase date in the baggage calculator. Resolve any conflict with United before departure rather than relying on an old fee screenshot.
