Air Canada carry-on size is 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in), including wheels and handles. The smaller personal item limit is 43 x 33 x 16 cm (17 x 13 x 6 in). But a bag that fits these limits still needs to be included in your fare.

Economy Basic is the catch. On certain routes, it includes only a personal item for tickets bought from January 3, 2025. An eligible international connection changes that answer, so check the whole itinerary before deciding what to pack.
Air Canada carry-on size and weight limits
| Bag | Maximum packed size | Weight and placement |
|---|---|---|
| Standard carry-on | 55 x 40 x 23 cm; 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in | No stated weight limit; you must store it overhead without assistance |
| Personal item | 43 x 33 x 16 cm; 17 x 13 x 6 in | Plan for the space under the seat ahead |
| Standard checked bag | 158 cm / 62 in total: height + width + depth | 23 kg / 50 lb in Economy and Premium Economy; generally 32 kg / 70 lb in Business or Signature Class |
Air Canada publishes its cabin dimensions in a different order on some pages. Match each number to the diagram rather than reading the first number as height. The personal item’s shortest dimension is 16 cm, not 33 cm.
Use the official cabin baggage policy to confirm physical limits. A higher cabin class or status benefit does not automatically make a larger suitcase acceptable.
Does your fare include the larger cabin bag?
Start with the ticket’s fare name, purchase date and final destination. Don’t treat every trip crossing a border as an unrestricted international itinerary. The United States and Mexico are specifically in the restricted Basic group.
| Ticket or itinerary | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Economy Basic bought from January 3, 2025: within Canada or to/from the United States, Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean | One personal item; larger bags must be checked before security |
| Economy Basic on other international routes, including an eligible onward international connection | One standard carry-on and one personal item |
| Standard, Flex, Comfort or Latitude | One standard carry-on and one personal item |
| Premium Economy, Business or Signature Class | Standard cabin size rules still apply; do not assume a second roller is included |
The restricted group includes Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Your flight being long, or crossing an ocean to Hawaii, doesn’t remove that Basic restriction.
How an international connection changes Basic
Air Canada’s Basic fare explanation extends an eligible international cabin allowance across the itinerary. A connecting Canadian or U.S. sector doesn’t erase it.
Hypothetical example: Detroit to Toronto to Paris on one eligible Air Canada Economy Basic itinerary includes the standard carry-on and personal item. Detroit to Toronto alone falls in the restricted group. Toronto to Cancun also remains in that group.
Separately purchased flights need separate checks. Don’t assume a later booking to Europe changes the allowance on an unrelated domestic ticket. Compare each ticket’s baggage line and obtain clarification before airport arrival.
Status, credit cards and vacation packages
Aeroplan Elite status, Star Alliance Gold and certain premium card benefits can create exceptions. A free checked bag and permission to take a roller into the cabin are different benefits. Have the applicable entitlement attached to your reservation.
Do not rely on an old screenshot promising all Aeroplan core cardholders a cabin exemption through November 30, 2026. Confirm your specific card, travel date and booking allowance with Air Canada. A card’s free first checked bag may still be useful even when cabin permission is unclear.
Package holidays also deserve a separate check. Use the baggage inclusions in your Air Canada Vacations documents, rather than assuming the regular Basic rule or a package advertisement applies to every booking.
A 22 inch suitcase can miss the limit
Air Canada carry-on size is slightly shorter than the 22 inch height used by many U.S. bag listings.
Calculated example: 22 x 2.54 = 55.88 cm. A genuinely 22 inch tall suitcase exceeds 55 cm by 0.88 cm.
That difference is small, but there is no published extra allowance for rounding. A 56 x 36 x 23 cm bag also fails the height limit despite being narrower than permitted. Cabin limits apply to each side, not the sum of all three sides.
Measure the bag you will actually take
- Pack normally, then close the expansion zip and fill any exterior pockets.
- Stand the suitcase on a flat surface. Measure from the bottom of the wheels to the highest fixed point.
- Measure width and depth at the widest bulges. Include fixed handles, protective feet and front pockets.
- Repeat after adding the jacket, souvenirs or laptop you expect to carry home.
Product pages may advertise the case body instead of its overall dimensions. Look for both figures before buying. Our carry-on luggage comparison explains this distinction across different suitcase designs.
For a backpack, the loaded shape matters more than its empty fabric dimensions. A rigid laptop sleeve may prevent compression even when the clothes can squash. Liters measure capacity, so a 30 liter label alone cannot prove a personal item fits.
Choose a bag that stays within the personal item limits without a struggle. Our underseat bag guide helps separate compact bags from small rollers that still exceed cabin limits.
What happens at the airport?
Expect your packed bag to be checked against the Air Canada carry-on size limits. Automated sizers are used at some locations before security or boarding. Stories about another passenger getting through don’t change the published rule.
There are three different reasons a bag might enter the hold. Identifying which applies keeps a routine space request from becoming a costly misunderstanding.
| Situation | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Eligible bag, but the flight is full | Passengers with an included standard carry-on may be asked to check it free to save bin space |
| Basic fare without standard cabin entitlement | The larger bag needs checking before security; normal checked fees apply |
| Bag exceeds the physical limit | It may have to be checked, with applicable charges |
For affected Basic passengers, the cabin policy lists a gate handling preauthorization of CA/US$65 to $78, including tax. This is not a payment that buys overhead space. Resolve an excluded bag before security instead of waiting for a free space check.
On smaller aircraft, a compliant bag can still need hold storage. Ask where to collect it, especially before a connection. Keep travel documents, keys, medicine and fragile valuables in the bag that stays with you.
Remove loose lithium batteries and power banks before any bag goes into the hold. A smart bag’s removable battery also needs attention. Use our power bank packing guide for the separate battery restrictions.
Checked baggage: size, fees and the dates that matter
A cabin allowance tells you nothing certain about free checked bags. The ticket’s route, fare, purchase date and benefits determine those. Your booking confirmation is more useful than a universal fee quoted without those details.
The table below summarizes the dated 2026 baggage fee changes. Amounts are published CA/US dollar base fees per direction, before applicable tax. They are not a conversion between the two currencies.
| Route and ticket purchase date | Fare | First bag | Second bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Within Canada; to/from U.S., Mexico, Caribbean or Central America. Purchased from April 13, 2026 | Basic or Standard | CA/US$45 | CA/US$60 |
| Same route group and purchase date | Flex | Included | CA/US$60 |
| Between Canada or U.S. and Africa, Asia/South Pacific, Europe, Middle East or South America. Purchased from May 14, 2026 | Basic | CA/US$90 | CA/US$120 |
| Same international group and purchase date | Standard or Flex | Included | CA/US$120 |
Those dates concern ticket purchase, not simply departure. Earlier tickets can have different charges. Premium cabins, Comfort, Latitude, rewards and individual benefits need their own allowance check.
Hypothetical domestic budget: one passenger buys a Toronto to Vancouver Basic return after April 13, 2026. One standard checked bag each way adds CA$90 before tax, assuming no exemption. Two bags each way add CA$210 before tax: (45 + 60) x 2.
Compare that total with the fare difference before buying. Standard includes the cabin roller but still charges for that first checked bag in this route group. Flex includes the first checked bag under the table’s conditions.
A Toronto to Paris Basic ticket bought from May 14 has a different calculation. One checked bag each direction adds CA$180 before tax under the listed conditions. Standard’s included first bag can make a larger fare difference worth considering if you need hold luggage.
Overweight, oversized and extra bags
The ordinary Economy checked limits are 23 kg and 158 cm total outside dimensions. A suitcase’s advertised 28 inch size doesn’t tell you its linear total. Add all three measured dimensions yourself.
Calculated example: a packed case measuring 76 x 50 x 33 cm totals 159 cm. It is oversized by 1 cm, even if it weighs only 20 kg. Removing clothing changes the weight, but won’t shrink a rigid shell.
Don’t automatically stack several internet fee figures together. Air Canada’s optional service fee schedule distinguishes route groups and combined excess conditions. Use the baggage calculator for your ticket and any extra pieces.
Contact the airline before taking a bag above 32 kg, 203 cm in length or 292 cm total dimensions. These are not ordinary paid oversize allowances to assume at check-in. Plan to arrive at least 120 minutes before departure when bringing extra, overweight or oversized baggage.
Military baggage benefits
Eligible active, retired and reserve Canadian and United States military members can check up to three bags free. Each can weigh up to 32 kg (70 lb), with valid military identification. The benefit requires an itinerary fully operated by Air Canada, Rouge or Express.
It does not extend to spouses, family or other companions. Bring your military ID to an airport agent for the baggage tags. A partner flight in the itinerary changes this eligibility, even if the partner belongs to Star Alliance.
Air Canada Express, Rouge and partner flights
The core policy covers Air Canada, Rouge and Air Canada Express. A smaller regional cabin may still require a roller to travel below. Packing an essentials pouch inside the larger bag makes that transfer easier.
Read the words “operated by” beside each flight. Buying a ticket from Air Canada doesn’t make another airline’s cabin or overhead bins identical. Confirm the operating carrier’s physical limits for each sector.
Checked baggage selection on mixed tickets is a separate question from cabin fit. Follow the allowance printed on your itinerary rather than applying a domestic rule to every partner journey. For a United connection, compare the United cabin baggage guide as well.
Keep separate tickets separate when planning collection and rechecking. Ask whether bags can be tagged through and allow time for any required collection. An airport connection is not proof that the bookings share one baggage allowance.
Children, medical equipment and additional items
Traveling with a lap infant allows an additional standard article for the child’s belongings, such as a diaper bag. This is a child care allowance, not spare space for an adult’s second roller.
One stroller per child can travel in addition to the usual baggage allowance. Small strollers within 25.5 cm collapsed diameter and 92 cm length can be checked free at the gate or counter. Large heavy models go to the counter and remain subject to space constraints.
For a child up to age 11, a car or booster seat can be checked free in addition to regular bags. Don’t fill its protective bag with clothing to create another suitcase. Review the children’s equipment rules before choosing a stroller or seat for the trip.
Medical and mobility items have separate exemptions. Necessary mobility aids, medication and approved medical equipment such as CPAP devices are not ordinary extra leisure luggage. Contact Accessibility Services about batteries, storage or assistance before departure.
A coat and a small purse up to 25 x 30 x 14 cm are additional permitted items. A larger purse uses the regular allowance. Duty-free shopping should not be treated as unlimited extra bags.
Security screening is another check altogether. A cabin bag can fit perfectly while its contents fail screening. Review our liquids packing guide before closing your toiletry pouch.
Before you leave home
- Save the baggage line from your booking, including fare name and any exception.
- Check every operating carrier and distinguish one itinerary from separate tickets.
- Measure the fully packed bag, including wheels, handles and pockets.
- Weigh each checked piece separately; do not assume two allowances can be pooled into one heavy case.
- Put medication, documents and removable batteries where you can reach them if the roller enters the hold.
- Set aside time for bag drop when your fare excludes a cabin suitcase.
Air Canada baggage questions
Can I bring a backpack and a carry-on on Air Canada?
Yes, when your fare includes a standard carry-on and personal item, and each bag fits its category. A backpack is not automatically a personal item. On restricted Economy Basic itineraries, the ordinary allowance is only the personal item.
Is a 22 inch suitcase within Air Canada carry-on size?
Not if its complete height is actually 22 inches. That equals 55.88 cm, above the 55 cm maximum. Check the manufacturer’s overall measurements and then measure your packed bag.
Does Air Canada have a 10 kg carry-on weight limit?
No fixed cabin baggage weight limit is published. The bag must be light enough for you to store overhead without assistance. A partner airline may have a different weight rule.
Can I pay to bring a roller on a restricted Basic ticket?
The published option is to pay for checking the larger bag before security. A checked baggage payment does not buy cabin permission. Confirm any individual exception on your booking before taking a roller to the gate.
Does Basic include a carry-on when connecting to Europe?
An eligible international Basic itinerary includes one standard carry-on and one personal item across its connecting sectors. Check the whole ticket and each operating carrier. A separately booked European flight does not automatically change another ticket.
Are Air Canada checked baggage fees charged each way?
Published baggage fees are per direction. Budget for the return as well and check its currency and allowance. A stopover longer than 24 hours can also cause fees to be reassessed.
