Sun Country Airlines baggage allowance: sizes and costs

One free personal item, a paid overhead bag and separate checked baggage rules. Choose the right category before you pack or pay.

Sun Country Airlines baggage allowance includes one small personal item. A full cabin suitcase costs extra unless your booking includes it. The free bag must fit under the seat and stay within 17 x 13 x 9 inches.

The useful distinction is simple: fitting the size limit and paying for the bag are two different checks. A perfectly sized roller can still cost extra. A backpack can be a paid carry-on if it’s too large for the free category.

These physical limits appear in Rules 205 and 225 of the Contract of Carriage dated October 15, 2025. Measure the whole packed bag, including wheels, handles and protruding pockets. Inch limits are the reference values here; rounded centimeters aren’t extra packing space.

The free personal item: shape matters more than the name

A purse, laptop bag, backpack or compact duffel can fill the personal item role. The label on the product doesn’t settle it. Its packed shape needs to fit the smaller box and the space beneath the seat ahead.

That matters when shopping for an “airline approved” backpack. Some bags sold for other airlines are 18 inches long. Turning an 18 x 13 x 8 inch bag sideways doesn’t erase the 18 inch side.

Don’t use total volume to decide fit either. A narrow but tall bag can hold less than a shorter backpack and still be too long. A rigid laptop sleeve can prevent an otherwise soft bag from compressing.

Check the bag with the laptop inside

  1. Pack the actual clothes, laptop and toiletries you plan to carry.
  2. Fill the outside pockets, then close every zipper.
  3. Measure the longest, widest and deepest points without squeezing the bag.
  4. Compare each side with the corresponding limit, rather than adding the sides together.
  5. Remove anything that makes a pocket bulge beyond the limit.

Build in a little room for the return journey. A souvenir or a hastily packed jacket can turn a compliant bag into a different shape. Our underseat bag guide explains why overall dimensions matter more than a manufacturer’s category label.

Also count your pieces before joining the boarding line. If your backpack is your one personal item, plan to put an ordinary purse or laptop sleeve inside it. Don’t assume several small bags collectively count as one.

The paid carry-on gives you a bigger box, not a free upgrade

Sun Country’s overhead limit is unusually useful for deeper bags, but it isn’t a reason to expand every suitcase. The bag still has to fit the sizer and weigh no more than the published cap. Weigh it after adding chargers, shoes and toiletries.

Check the manufacturer’s overall measurements before buying a roller. A “22 inch” model may describe only the case body. Wheels and the fixed top handle can change its real height.

Three checks for a Sun Country cabin bag: measure the packed shape, choose personal item or overhead category, and confirm the overhead purchase.
Size decides the category. Your reservation decides whether the larger bag has already been paid for.

A larger Sun Country compliant bag may fail another airline’s cabin limit. If your trip includes a separate Delta flight or a Frontier booking, compare both policies before choosing luggage. Paid baggage on one airline doesn’t automatically buy baggage on the next.

How to price your bags without relying on an old fee table

Use the official bag price tool and baggage page with your flight details. Obtain a quote for the actual bag category, passenger and direction. Don’t treat an advertised starting price as the final cost of a round trip.

For Sun Country Airlines baggage allowance, the reservation is also where you check any bundle or special benefit. Look for a named overhead or checked bag inclusion. A better seat, priority boarding or a loyalty membership alone isn’t proof that a bag has been purchased.

Before paying, compare the cost of the whole plan. One shared checked suitcase might suit two people better than two overhead bags. It also creates a baggage claim stop, so price isn’t the only consideration.

Save the receipt with the passenger name and flight details. Check that the return bag appears too. If a travel agent sold the ticket, reconcile the agent’s wording with the airline’s reservation before departure.

The credit card benefit is a discount with conditions

The Sun Country Visa Signature card terms, revised August 2026, offer 50% off the first bag for the primary cardholder and companions on the same itinerary. The primary cardholder must purchase baggage before the flight through Sun Country’s website or app. This is a first bag discount, not an unlimited free bag allowance.

Check the discount in the total before payment. Don’t assume it covers excess weight, oversized equipment or a second bag. If you qualify for a military benefit, have Sun Country confirm the eligible traveler, required identification and specific bags before you purchase extras.

Checked bags: add the sides, then weigh each piece

For checked luggage, “linear inches” means adding three outside measurements. Unlike cabin baggage, it isn’t a separate maximum for each side. A case measuring 30 x 20 x 12 inches totals 62 linear inches.

That example sits exactly on the standard size threshold. Expanding its depth to 14 inches changes the total to 64. Removing clothes can fix excess weight, but it won’t shorten a rigid suitcase.

Weigh every suitcase separately. A light bag doesn’t give a heavier bag permission to exceed its own limit. If you share a suitcase, leave space and weight for items bought during the trip.

Arrange an excess baggage quote for anything above the standard thresholds. The contract’s general acceptance ceiling is 80 linear inches and 100 lb, with separate provisions for certain instruments. Those are outer acceptance limits, not a standard allowance or a promise that your route will accept a heavy item.

Ask about restrictions for your exact destination and travel date, especially for unusually heavy bags. Don’t pack to an outer ceiling based on a generic domestic allowance. The cost of an overweight suitcase and the question of whether it can travel are separate decisions.

Golf clubs and instruments need their own packing check

Don’t apply a normal suitcase fee quote to every piece of equipment. The contract has separate conditions for golf, fishing gear, bicycles and musical instruments. Give the airline the item type, packed measurements and weight before paying.

A protective travel case can change both size and weight. Measure the case, not the clubs or instrument inside. If you need an instrument to travel in its own cabin seat, arrange that with the airline rather than buying an ordinary baggage add-on.

Children, strollers and assistive equipment

For a lap infant, don’t assume a diaper bag creates a second free adult personal item. The published family rules count the child’s cabin baggage within the accompanying adult’s allowance. Pack that way unless your reservation has a specifically confirmed exception.

Car seats and strollers can be checked without an additional baggage charge. A child needs a purchased seat to use an approved restraint during the flight. The airport authority’s Sun Country family guidance also describes counter and gate checking options.

Ask where each item will be returned before handing it over. Protect straps and removable parts, and use a suitable protective case. Keep diapers, feeding supplies and a change of clothes accessible rather than inside a checked stroller bag.

Qualifying assistive devices have separate treatment from ordinary luggage. Explain the equipment you need to Sun Country before travel, particularly powered mobility aids or oxygen concentrators. A large medical device shouldn’t be judged as an ordinary extra suitcase without that discussion.

What happens if the bag doesn’t qualify at the gate?

Budget using the written limits, not the hope that nobody measures your bag. A previous flight without a size check doesn’t change today’s allowance. Staff also need to decide whether the item can be safely stowed on the actual aircraft.

If an item exceeds the cabin limits, be prepared for checked handling and the applicable charge. Paying for an overhead bag doesn’t remove its size or weight rules. Resolve doubts at the counter while you still have time to repack.

If your bag is taken for the hold, remove spare lithium batteries and power banks first. The FAA requires these to remain in the cabin, with terminals protected against short circuits. Keep passports, medication, keys and valuables with you too.

Our power bank packing guide covers battery checks. The liquids guide explains the separate checkpoint rules. Buying baggage space doesn’t change what security permits.

Before leaving home

  • Measure every packed bag, including the small one.
  • Weigh the overhead bag and each checked suitcase separately.
  • Find the baggage receipt for every traveler and direction.
  • Confirm any child, medical, military or card benefit you intend to use.
  • Check the operating airline on every flight, including the return.
  • Keep batteries and essential items easy to remove if a cabin bag is checked.

Sun Country baggage questions

Is a backpack free on Sun Country?

Yes, if it is your one personal item, stays within the published personal item dimensions and fits under the seat. A larger backpack belongs in the paid overhead category if it meets those limits.

Can I bring a purse and a carry-on?

Yes. A purse can serve as your personal item while a purchased overhead bag serves as your carry-on. Check both bags against their separate limits and confirm the overhead bag on your reservation.

Does Sun Country weigh carry-on bags?

The published overhead bag limit is 35 lb. Pack within it whether or not you expect a scale check. A bag that meets the dimensions can still be overweight.

Are checked bags included in the ticket price?

Don’t assume so. Check the reservation for a specific checked bag inclusion, purchase or applicable benefit. Ordinary checked bags are chargeable under the published policy.

Can I use a suitcase sold as a 24 inch carry-on?

Only if its overall packed dimensions and weight meet Sun Country’s limits. A product’s “24 inch” label may exclude its wheels or handles. Check the manufacturer’s overall measurements, then measure your actual bag.

Where should I confirm my Sun Country Airlines baggage allowance?

Check the airline’s baggage page and your reservation together. Confirm the physical limits, purchased bag category and any benefit for your passenger and flight dates. Repeat the check for the return journey.
