Air France carry-on size is 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.7 x 13.8 x 9.9 inches), including wheels and handles. The separate small bag limit is 40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 inches). Economy Basic includes the small bag, but an overhead bag requires an eligible benefit or a paid option.

The other catch is weight. Economy and Premium have a 12 kg combined cabin limit; Business and La Premiere have 18 kg. Your laptop bag shares that allowance with your suitcase, so moving a charger between them will not solve an overweight pair.
Air France carry-on size and cabin allowance
| Cabin or fare | Ordinary cabin allowance | Combined weight |
|---|---|---|
| Economy Basic | 1 small bag; overhead bag only with the Hand Baggage option or qualifying benefit | 12 kg / 26.4 lb when an overhead bag is permitted |
| Economy with overhead baggage included | 1 overhead bag and 1 small bag | 12 kg / 26.4 lb |
| Premium | 2 overhead bags and 1 small bag, subject to the US departure restriction below | 12 kg / 26.4 lb across all pieces |
| Business and La Premiere | 2 overhead bags and 1 small bag, subject to the US departure restriction below | 18 kg / 40 lb across all pieces |
For departures from the United States, Air France limits cabin baggage to one overhead bag and one small bag. That restriction matters even when your cabin normally permits two overhead pieces. Premium’s published weight limit remains 12 kg, rather than the 18 kg allowance for Business.
These are the rules for flights operated by Air France, checked October 17, 2026. Read the current Air France cabin policy alongside your booking. A flight number alone does not identify the operating airline.
The small bag is genuinely small
Think compact satchel or slim laptop bag rather than a second travel backpack. Its published dimensions are 40 x 30 x 15 cm, and it belongs under the seat. In an exit row, Air France requires storage in the overhead compartment instead.
A backpack can serve as either bag category if it meets that category’s rules. Calling a large backpack a personal item does not make it one. If you need something compact, compare actual outside dimensions in our underseat bag guide.
Basic, Light and a paid overhead bag are different things
Check the fare name before worrying about the suitcase. Basic removes the ordinary overhead bag from the fare. Do not treat the words Basic and Light as interchangeable, or assume every Economy ticket includes the same pieces.
The Hand Baggage option terms identify eligible Basic routes. These include flights within Europe and selected nearby markets, plus certain Caribbean and other specified services. They do not describe a blanket rule removing overhead baggage from every Air France route worldwide.
For Basic passengers, Flying Blue Gold, Platinum and Ultimate can provide one free overhead piece. Silver or Explorer membership alone does not provide that Basic cabin benefit. Add the correct membership number, then verify that the benefit appears against your journey.
You can buy the Hand Baggage option during booking or afterward through My Bookings. Online purchase is available until four hours before departure; the cabin policy also lists airport counters. The quoted price depends on the destination, so use your actual itinerary rather than an undated starting price.
Buying this option does not buy a second overhead bag in Economy. It also does not increase the combined 12 kg allowance. A bag that is too large still needs a different transport plan.
Check the return journey separately
The option covers a specified journey or segment, not an entire round trip automatically. A return trip can have different baggage selections. Save the confirmation showing which direction includes your purchased bag.
Hypothetical booking example: You select Basic for Paris to Rome and buy an overhead option for that direction. Before paying, open the Rome to Paris baggage line too. The outbound selection does not establish that the return suitcase is covered.
Will a standard American carry-on fit?
A suitcase actually measuring 22 x 14 x 9 inches exceeds Air France carry-on size on two sides. Its shorter depth does not cancel the extra height or width. Cabin compliance is a test of each dimension, not an allowance you can redistribute between sides.
Converted exactly, that hypothetical American bag measures 55.88 x 35.56 x 22.86 cm. Against 55 x 35 x 25 cm, it is 0.88 cm too tall and 0.56 cm too wide. Those are calculated differences, not a claim about how a particular agent will handle the bag.
Small differences are still differences. There is no published general tolerance promising acceptance of a 22 inch case. A bag that passed on a previous Delta flight needs another measurement before the Air France segment.
Measure the packed exterior in five minutes
- Pack the bag fully, including its exterior pockets. Close the expansion zip unless you plan to travel with it open.
- Retract the telescoping handle. Include fixed handles, wheels, feet and any rigid protrusions.
- Measure the three widest outside dimensions. A product name such as 21 inch rarely answers all three questions.
- Check the small bag separately. A bottle or thick laptop sleeve can make a slim bag too deep.
- Weigh the complete permitted cabin set together. Leave enough margin for purchases you actually plan to carry.
For soft bags, measure their packed shape rather than the empty fabric. Compression is useful only when the bag stays within the limits with its contents inside. Avoid buying a new case from its advertised capacity alone; our carry-on luggage comparison explains which exterior measurements matter.
The combined weight trap, illustrated
Hypothetical Economy example: Your roller weighs 9 kg and your laptop bag weighs 4 kg. Together they weigh 13 kg, which is 1 kg above the allowance. Moving the laptop into the roller creates a heavier roller and lighter satchel, but the same 13 kg total.
To reach 12 kg, remove 1 kg from the cabin set. That might mean leaving an item behind or putting a permitted item in an already allowed checked bag. Spare batteries and power banks cannot be shifted into the hold to make the numbers work.
Premium passengers need the same arithmetic even when two overhead bags are permitted. Two overhead pieces do not each receive 12 kg. A hypothetical 6 kg case, 5 kg duffel and 2 kg satchel total 13 kg, so that set is also over.
Weight and size remain separate checks. A very light suitcase can be too wide; a perfectly sized one can be too heavy. Resolve both at home rather than trying to repack while the boarding queue moves.
Checked baggage: allowance, size and what costs extra
The current checked baggage tab gives these fare dependent ranges. Your ticket determines the included number within the range. A paid cabin option does not itself add a checked bag.
| Cabin | Included checked pieces, depending on fare | Weight per included piece |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 0 to 2 | 23 kg / 50 lb |
| Premium | 0 to 2 | 23 kg / 50 lb |
| Business | 1 to 2 | 32 kg / 70.5 lb |
| La Premiere | 3 | 32 kg / 70.5 lb |
Standard checked size is 158 cm (62.2 inches) total: add height, width and depth, including protruding parts. This is different from cabin baggage, where each side has its own maximum. Two bags with different shapes can have the same checked dimension total.
Hypothetical checked example: A packed case measuring 75 x 50 x 30 cm totals 155 cm. Adding a 5 cm expansion increases that total to 160 cm. The expanded case has crossed the standard size threshold even if its weight remains under 23 kg.
Extra, overweight and oversized are separate options
An Additional Baggage option adds another piece. An Overweight Baggage option covers a piece above its included weight, up to 32 kg. An Oversized Baggage option applies above 158 cm and up to 300 cm total.
These charges can combine. Adding a checked piece does not erase a size or weight excess. A bag over 32 kg, or over 300 cm total, needs a different arrangement through Air France Cargo.
Fees depend on your trip and the selected option. Use the official extra baggage options and your booking for the applicable currency and amount. Overweight and oversized options are paid at the airport.
Air France advertises an advance online discount for additional checked baggage purchased at least 24 hours before departure. Flights to or from the United States and Canada are excluded: the additional bag price is the same online and at the airport. Do not budget an automatic advance discount for a US trip.
Flying Blue benefits need the right status
The current checked baggage tab lists one additional piece for Silver and Gold, and two for Platinum and Ultimate. Confirm the resulting allowance in My Bookings, especially across partner flights. A checked baggage benefit is separate from the Basic overhead benefit, which starts at Gold.
Write down the included pieces and each piece’s maximum weight. A booking showing two 23 kg bags is not a promise that one 46 kg bag will be accepted. Split the contents before reaching the counter.
Connections and partner flights need two checks
For cabin baggage, check the airline operating each segment. An Air France ticket may include a KLM connection or another partner’s aircraft. Plan the cabin set around the strictest applicable limits across the journey.
Checked baggage selection can follow different rules. Air France’s checked policy describes cases where its rules cover the whole booking, including certain US or Canada journeys. It identifies the first transatlantic flight’s Air France flight number as a relevant condition for those journeys.
Do not apply that checked baggage explanation to cabin bags. Read the baggage line on your ticket for the hold, and the operating carrier’s cabin rules for each flight. Check the return direction independently.
At bag drop, confirm where the bag is tagged and whether you must collect it during the connection. That question matters even when the allowance is clear. Leave medication and documents accessible throughout the transfer.
Gate checks, batteries and the bag that stays with you
A compliant overhead bag can go into the hold free when the flight is full. An oversized cabin bag is different: Air France requires it to be checked and additional fees may apply. An anecdote about a free gate check does not establish a free allowance for a noncompliant suitcase.
Pack a small removable pouch with your passport, essential medication, valuables and electronics. Before handing over a roller, remove anything that must remain in the cabin. Confirm its tag destination and collection point with the agent.
Air France’s battery rules prohibit power banks in checked baggage and in overhead bins. Keep them quickly accessible and under your supervision. Using or charging a power bank onboard is prohibited.
For capacity limits and terminal protection, read our power bank packing guide alongside the airline’s restrictions. Spare batteries also need a cabin plan when the roller is checked. Do this before reaching the aircraft door.
Children, strollers and essential medical items
A child occupying a booked seat has the allowance associated with that child’s fare and cabin. A lap infant has a separate published cabin allowance of one bag up to 12 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Do not assume a seat purchase or a parent’s premium cabin creates unlimited baby bags.
The family baggage policy lists a checked infant bag up to 10 kg when the ticket conditions include checked baggage. It also lists a stroller or rigid infant carrier, plus a car seat. Cabin stroller acceptance depends on its dimensions and available space, so arrange that separately.
For medical equipment or mobility aids, contact the airline’s assistance service before packing. Explain the device, batteries and whether it is needed during the flight. Do not substitute an ordinary baggage purchase for an equipment approval.
Keep essential medication and its prescription in your accessible cabin bag. Security screening is a separate process from the airline’s baggage allowance. Our liquids guide explains the routine screening distinction and relevant exceptions.
Your final check before leaving for the airport
- Read the fare and operating airline on every segment, including the return.
- Confirm overhead entitlement before bringing a roller on Basic.
- Compare the packed exterior against Air France carry-on size, then check the small bag too.
- Weigh all permitted cabin pieces together. Premium uses the same 12 kg total as Economy.
- Check included hold pieces, per bag weight and any purchased options in My Bookings.
- Keep batteries, documents and medication ready to remove if an overhead bag is checked.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring a backpack and a carry-on on Air France?
Yes, if your fare or benefit includes an overhead bag and the backpack fits the small bag allowance. The pair must meet the combined weight limit. Economy Basic does not automatically include the overhead piece.
Is Air France Premium’s cabin baggage allowance 18 kg?
No. The current Air France cabin policy lists 12 kg combined for Premium, with 18 kg for Business and La Premiere. Premium’s usual two overhead pieces do not each receive a separate 12 kg allowance.
Does a 22 inch carry-on meet Air France carry-on size?
A bag actually measuring 22 inches on its longest side exceeds the 55 cm limit. A 22 inch product name is not enough information. Measure its full packed exterior, including wheels and fixed handles.
Can I pay for a second overhead bag in Economy?
No. The Basic Hand Baggage option brings the ordinary overhead allowance to one piece, not two. If your contents need another ordinary bag, compare checked baggage options instead.
Are compliant cabin bags always kept in the cabin?
No. Air France may check a compliant overhead bag free on a full flight. Keep valuables, medication, documents and required cabin batteries ready to remove before handing it over.
