KLM baggage allowance: carry-on sizes, fares and checked bags

Understand KLM Basic, Light and premium cabin baggage with current sizes, US departure exceptions, checked bag fees and worked packing examples.

KLM baggage allowance starts with your fare, not your suitcase. Economy Basic includes a small bag only; Light adds an overhead bag but no checked suitcase. Standard and Flex normally include both cabin pieces and one checked bag.

The useful distinction is between three separate permissions: what fits under your seat, what you can take into the cabin, and what travels in the hold. A purchase in one category doesn’t automatically add another. Check each direction of your booking before paying for luggage.

*Departing from the United States: KLM limits cabin baggage to one overhead piece and one small bag, regardless of cabin. Premium Comfort’s extra piece therefore isn’t available on that departure. The weight limit still follows the cabin.

The dedicated KLM cabin baggage policy sets the dimensions and piece limits. For included hold luggage, use its checked baggage allowance alongside your booking. Some destinations include another checked piece.

Measure two different sizes, then weigh everything together

The main carry-on limit is 55 x 35 x 25 cm, including handles and wheels. The small bag limit is 40 x 30 x 15 cm. That smaller bag belongs beneath the seat in front, with an emergency exit seating exception.

For reference, those figures convert to approximately 21.7 x 13.8 x 9.8 inches and 15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 inches. Use the centimeter figures when comparing a bag near the limit. A rounded inch label can hide a small overage.

A suitcase sold as a 22-inch carry-on needs closer attention. If 22 inches describes its full exterior, that’s 55.88 cm, slightly beyond 55 cm. If it describes only the shell, the wheels may add even more.

Pack first, close the expansion zip, and measure the furthest points on each side. Include filled front pockets and any handle that sticks out. A depth measurement taken from an empty bag won’t account for a stuffed laptop sleeve.

Bag capacity doesn’t settle this question. A 20-liter backpack may be too deep as a small bag, while a flatter briefcase works. Our underseat bag guide explains how to compare packed shapes.

A worked weight example

Hypothetical Economy Light packing: a roller weighs 8.4 kg and a laptop bag weighs 4.1 kg. Each looks manageable, but together they weigh 12.5 kg. Moving a charger between them changes neither the total nor the outcome.

Worked KLM packing example: 8.4 kg roller plus 4.1 kg small bag equals 12.5 kg, exceeding a 12 kg combined allowance
Calculated example, not a bag test. Shifting items between cabin bags doesn’t reduce their combined weight.

Remove at least 0.5 kg from that cabin load to reach 12 kg. Leaving a little margin is sensible if you’ll add purchases later. If you have checked luggage, move suitable clothing there before leaving home.

Premium Comfort adds space, not another 12 kg allowance. Two empty rollers can use a substantial share before you pack any clothes. A lighter second bag may help more than a larger one.

Basic versus Light: compare the actual trip cost

Basic is offered on selected routes. If you need an overhead bag, compare Basic plus its baggage option against Light for the same flights. Then compare Standard if you also need a checked suitcase.

Write down the outbound and return costs separately. An inexpensive outbound option doesn’t establish the return price or permission. Keep the baggage confirmation with your flight documents.

The Basic hand baggage option adds one overhead piece within the existing combined weight cap. It can be bought through My Trip up to four hours before departure. It doesn’t buy a second overhead piece, a larger bag, or guaranteed cabin storage.

Flying Blue Gold, Platinum and Ultimate members receive that overhead piece free on eligible Basic travel operated by KLM or Air France. Silver isn’t listed for this particular benefit. Check that the eligible status is attached and valid at airport check-in.

The hand baggage option terms make it a purchase for a flight segment or one direction, rather than the whole return trip. They also allow the bag to travel in the hold on a full flight. A receipt for the option isn’t a promise of overhead space.

A simple fare comparison worksheet

Use real quotes from the same itinerary. These are comparison steps, not advertised prices.

Use the KLM baggage allowance shown under each flight as the final check. The fare’s change and refund terms matter too, so compare more than luggage. A higher fare can still be poor value if it adds services you won’t use.

Checked bag sizes, fees and the numbered bag trap

A standard checked bag can total 158 cm / about 62.2 inches across length, width and height. Wheels and handles count. The weight cap is per bag, unlike the combined cabin limit.

Calculated example: 75 + 50 + 30 cm totals 155 cm, within the standard size allowance. Opening an expansion panel to 35 cm changes that total to 160 cm. The same suitcase can therefore become oversized after packing.

Don’t treat two included bags as permission for one double weight bag. Two 23 kg pieces don’t authorize a 46 kg suitcase. If you need more capacity, distribute suitable items between separate compliant bags.

KLM’s added bag table prices the numbered piece you are taking. With one piece already included, the next is the second bag. With two included, another suitcase is the third.

Published added standard bag examples for travel between the US or Canada and Europe, in USD, checked October 17, 2026. Charged when that numbered bag isn’t included; confirm each direction in My Trip.
Numbered checked bagPublished USD priceExample
FirstUSD 75An Economy Light traveler adding a first suitcase
SecondUSD 100An Economy Standard traveler adding another suitcase
ThirdUSD 285A traveler adding a third beyond two included pieces

These aren’t universal worldwide prices or overweight charges. For this corridor, adding a first and second standard bag totals USD 175 when neither is included. Currency and your actual booking quote matter before payment.

Check the extra baggage price table for other routes. It also lists extra checked benefits of one piece for Flying Blue Silver or Gold, and two for Platinum or Ultimate. Benefits depend on your status on the flight date.

Overweight and oversized bags need a separate check

A 24 kg Economy bag exceeds its normal 23 kg cap even if your fare includes a suitcase. An extra piece purchase doesn’t remove that overage. Weigh each checked bag on its own before comparing the total number of pieces.

The excess schedule has flat charges and airport dependent weight bands. A single worldwide overweight fee would be misleading. If you’re near a threshold, compare repacking against the actual airport charge.

Ordinary baggage cannot exceed 32 kg per piece or 300 cm in combined dimensions; larger loads require a cargo arrangement. Special equipment has its own acceptance conditions. Check those before buying an ordinary extra bag option for a bicycle or instrument.

Full flights, connections and bags taken at the gate

A compliant bag can still be checked free because overhead space runs out. That’s different from paying because your bag exceeds its size, weight or fare allowance. Don’t use an operational bag collection as a way to avoid purchasing required baggage.

Keep a small pouch ready with your passport, essential medicines, keys and fragile valuables. Before surrendering a roller, remove its power bank and spare batteries. Ask where to collect the bag and inspect the destination printed on its tag.

On a connection, read the operating airline under each flight number. A KL code alone doesn’t establish the cabin limits for a partner aircraft. Compare Delta’s cabin bag rules or Air France’s baggage guide when either operates a segment.

For cabin luggage, pack to the tightest applicable limits across the journey. Hold baggage follows the allowance recorded for your ticketed itinerary; don’t infer it from the cabin bag comparison. Separate tickets also need separate baggage checks.

There is a useful exception to blanket partner warnings. KLM says Cityhopper substitute flights operated by German Airways or Air France HOP! retain its Cityhopper baggage allowance.

Its Cityhopper partner explanation identifies those arrangements. Check whether your flight is one of these substitutions before applying a different partner’s rules.

Traveling with children or a mobility aid

A child with their own seat gets the baggage allowance attached to their ticket type. A baby under two traveling on your lap has a separate cabin allowance: one piece up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm and 12 kg. Food needed during the flight can also come along.

For that lap infant, Basic and Light exclude a checked bag. Other ticket types include one checked piece up to 10 kg. Check the infant’s baggage line rather than copying the accompanying adult’s suitcase allowance.

One buggy, stroller or back carrier per child travels free. To take a stroller to the gate, it must fully collapse, measure no more than 55 x 45 x 25 cm folded, and weigh no more than 10 kg. Larger strollers and all back carriers go through bag drop.

Cabin acceptance of a stroller still depends on space. On Cityhopper, a stroller taken to the gate always travels in the hold. Read the child equipment conditions before relying on a cabin stroller for your connection.

Your wheelchair is a separate planning issue, with free transport subject to aircraft acceptance requirements. Contact KLM at least 48 hours ahead with its dimensions, weight and battery details. Don’t apply a standard suitcase purchase to it.

The wheelchair transport page sets aircraft specific limits. Detachable parts such as cushions and footrests can be additional permitted hand baggage. Arrange how you’ll move between gates and where your own chair will be returned.

Keep batteries accessible and liquids ready for security

KLM permits up to two power banks, subject to its capacity and approval rules. Keep them with you, outside the overhead bin. Using or charging a power bank on board is prohibited.

For capacity above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh, request permission before travel. Avoid any pack with an unreadable capacity label, damage or recall. Our power bank packing guide explains the labels and terminal protection.

Check KLM’s restricted cabin items before packing. For toiletries, plan around containers of up to 100 ml and a transparent closed bag of up to one liter. Airport screening rules can change, so check your departure and transfer airports too.

For the security step, see our guide to liquids on planes. Bag size and security permission are separate tests. Passing one doesn’t settle the other.

Before you leave: a short baggage check

  1. Open every flight in My Trip. Note the fare, operating carrier and baggage line for both directions.
  2. Save the confirmation for any purchased bag. Make sure it covers the flight you intend to use.
  3. Measure the packed exterior, including wheels, handles and full pockets. Check the small bag separately.
  4. Weigh all cabin pieces together, then weigh each checked suitcase individually.
  5. Keep batteries, documents and essential medicines easy to remove if a roller goes into the hold.
  6. Review the baggage line again after a ticket change or upgrade. Don’t assume the new seat changed every bag entitlement.

KLM baggage allowance questions

Does KLM Light include a carry-on bag?

Yes. Economy Light includes one overhead bag and one small bag, within the combined 12 kg limit. It doesn’t include a checked suitcase.

Can I bring two backpacks instead of a roller?

Bag shape doesn’t define the category. With an overhead piece included or purchased, one backpack can fill that allowance and another can be the small bag. Each must meet its category’s dimensions, and their combined weight must stay within your cabin limit.

Does Premium Comfort allow 24 kg of cabin luggage?

No. Its two overhead pieces and small bag share 12 kg, not 12 kg each. Departures from the US also limit you to one overhead piece and one small bag.

Can I combine two checked allowances in one suitcase?

No. The checked weight limit applies to each piece. Two included 23 kg bags don’t permit one 46 kg suitcase.

Is buying an overhead bag a guarantee it stays with me?

No. KLM can place a compliant overhead bag in the hold when cabin space runs out. Keep essential items and permitted spare batteries in your accessible small bag.
