Cathay Pacific baggage allowance usually includes one cabin bag and one small personal item, sharing a weight limit. In Economy and Premium Economy, that normally means 7 kg combined, not 7 kg for each bag. The main bag may measure up to 56 x 36 x 23 cm; the small item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

Checked baggage depends on your fare, cabin and itinerary. Economy Light normally includes one 23 kg bag; Essential and Flex include two 23 kg bags. Status benefits and the special Hong Kong to New Zealand rules can change the picture.
Cathay Pacific cabin baggage: the useful numbers
| Item or passenger | Allowance | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Main cabin bag | 1 piece, 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in) | Measure wheels, handles and filled pockets |
| Small personal item | 1 item, 40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 in) | Must fit beneath the seat in Economy and Premium Economy |
| Economy and Premium Economy | 7 kg (15 lb) combined | The laptop bag shares this limit |
| Business | 10 kg (22 lb) combined | Extra weight, not a second main suitcase |
| First; Cathay Diamond in any cabin | 15 kg (33 lb) combined | The same bag dimensions still apply |
| Cathay Silver or Gold in Economy or Premium Economy | 10 kg (22 lb) combined | Qualifying Cathay flights; partner rules can differ |
Cathay’s ticket contract notice specifies the combined limits and route exceptions. Add your frequent flyer number before checking your booking allowance. Don’t assume another airline’s equivalent status gives the same cabin weight benefit.
A laptop bag, small backpack, handbag or camera bag can be your small item. Its contents still count toward the combined weight. A duty-free shopping bag is not an automatic third bag outside these limits.
A US cabin suitcase can fail the width check
A hypothetical case measuring 55 x 38 x 23 cm is short enough, but 2 cm too wide. Its total dimensions don’t fix that problem. Each cabin dimension has its own ceiling.
Measure the packed bag with its handle retracted. Check the widest point across the wheels, then check the depth after closing any expansion zip. A manufacturer’s case dimensions may omit exactly the parts that cause a problem.
Our carry-on luggage guide explains how to compare overall measurements. An existing suitcase that fits your other airline still needs this separate check.
Two bags, one weight budget
The easiest packing mistake is weighing the roller alone. Imagine a 4.8 kg roller and a 2.7 kg laptop bag. Both can fit their size limits while their 7.5 kg total exceeds a normal Economy allowance.
Moving a charger from the roller to the laptop bag changes nothing on that combined scale. Removing 0.7 kg of clothing to an included checked bag brings the hypothetical total to 6.8 kg. Keep batteries and essential documents in the cabin.
Build the weight budget before choosing a bag. An empty 3 kg suitcase leaves just 4 kg for everything else in the ordinary 7 kg allowance. A lighter bag can matter more than a larger internal capacity.
Lay out your laptop, chargers, toiletries and travel documents first. Weigh them with the empty bags, then use the remaining allowance for clothes. This avoids discovering that your essential electronics have used most of the budget.
For a softer setup, compare underseat bags by their packed dimensions. A floppy backpack can become too deep once you add a water bottle or coat.
Checked baggage by fare: Light still includes a bag
| Cabin or fare | Included checked bags | Standard size per bag |
|---|---|---|
| Economy Light | 1 x 23 kg (50 lb) | 158 cm (62 in) total |
| Economy Essential or Flex | 2 x 23 kg each | 158 cm total |
| Premium Economy | 2 x 23 kg each | 158 cm total |
| Business | 2 x 32 kg (70 lb) each | 158 cm total |
| First | 3 x 32 kg each | 158 cm total |
These are the allowances in Cathay’s fare comparison and baggage answers. Business has a different allowance on qualifying Hong Kong and New Zealand journeys. Your receipt and Manage Booking remain the place to confirm your ticket’s entitlement.
For checked bags, total size means length plus width plus height. A hypothetical 75 x 50 x 30 cm suitcase totals 155 cm. A 78 x 52 x 32 cm case totals 162 cm, above the standard limit.
Don’t confuse 2PC with 23K on an itinerary. The first describes a piece count; the second describes an allowance measured by weight. Check the applicable policy before converting either into a packing plan.
Two 23 kg bags don’t automatically become one free 30 kg bag
A piece allowance controls both the number of bags and the weight of each one. An unused second piece doesn’t automatically remove an overweight charge on your first. For a normal two piece allowance, packing 22 kg and 22 kg is easier to assess than packing 30 kg and 14 kg.
Cathay permits companions to share allowances when checking in together for the same flights. That is not a promise that every bag may weigh 32 kg without a charge. Confirm how your particular bags will be assessed before relying on pooling.
For a family move, write down every suitcase’s packed weight separately. Compare the piece count first, then each bag’s weight and size. An overall household total can hide the one suitcase that needs repacking.
The Hong Kong and New Zealand exception
The special policy is narrower than simply having New Zealand somewhere in your trip. It requires a non-stop Hong Kong to New Zealand flight, only Cathay or Air New Zealand flights, and all ticketed points within those two places.
On a qualifying journey, Business and Premium Economy receive two cabin pieces of up to 7 kg each. Cathay Silver, Gold and Diamond members in Economy also receive two such pieces. Other Economy passengers receive one cabin piece up to 7 kg.
Each main piece still has the 56 x 36 x 23 cm limit. Business checked baggage becomes three pieces of up to 23 kg each, rather than two of 32 kg. The other standard fare counts remain subject to your ticket.
A hypothetical Hong Kong to Auckland ticket can qualify. London to Hong Kong to Auckland doesn’t meet the requirement for all ticketed points, even though its last flight is the same. Check the complete ticket, not just the boarding pass for the New Zealand sector.
If another flight is operated by Air New Zealand, compare its cabin and checked baggage rules too. A shared flight number doesn’t make every practical packing condition identical.
Extra baggage charges: price the right problem
There are three separate questions: do you have an extra piece, an overweight piece or an oversized piece? Adding a bag doesn’t necessarily pay for excess weight in a different bag. Tell Cathay the number, weight and dimensions of each item when requesting a quote.
| Route | Regular charge per extra piece | Standard extra bag weight |
|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong and Japan | USD 100 | 23 kg Economy/Premium Economy; 32 kg Business/First |
| Hong Kong and India | USD 130 | Same cabin limits |
| Hong Kong and United Kingdom | USD 150 | Same cabin limits |
| Hong Kong and United States | USD 200 | Same cabin limits |
Each example assumes a bag within 158 cm total, without overweight or oversize charges. Mixed carriers and international journeys via the US or Canada need a separate check of the applicable carrier rules. These are regular tariff examples, not prepaid quotes for every connection.
Applicable taxes are added to the published fees. Payment is collected in the equivalent local currency.
The official excess baggage schedule prices routes by zone. On eligible routes using the piece policy, advance purchase offers up to 10% off. It covers up to three extra pieces when purchased at least 24 hours before departure.
Compare an Essential fare with Light plus an extra bag before buying. Include any seat or ticket flexibility benefits you actually need. A fare upgrade is only cheaper if its full price difference beats the additions you would otherwise buy.
For ordinary checked baggage, plan around a maximum of 32 kg per piece. Bags beyond 158 cm total can attract oversize charges up to the published maximum of 203 cm. Contact Cathay at least three working days ahead for unusual items requiring arrangements; paying online isn’t approval for an exceptional item.
Status, upgrades and connecting airlines
Cathay Gold and Diamond usually receive an extra checked piece matching their cabin’s allowance. Silver’s larger cabin weight allowance doesn’t mean an extra checked bag. Add the correct membership number, then look for the benefit in your booking.
For other oneworld programs, Emerald generally adds a checked piece under Cathay’s standard policy. Sapphire’s extra 23 kg piece applies to qualifying Economy tickets with one included piece, including Light and relevant redemption tickets. Don’t add another bag automatically to a two piece Essential allowance.
Cathay’s baggage calculator asks for your route, cabin and membership. It also warns that Upgrade Bid keeps your original ticket’s baggage allowance. Sitting in Business after a successful bid doesn’t by itself prove that you can pack Business baggage.
Checked baggage across airlines follows the applicable carrier rules, including special treatment for itineraries starting or ending in the US or Canada. Cabin baggage must meet the operating airline’s rules on each flight. These are separate decisions.
Use Cathay’s mixed carrier guidance for the checked portion. If a connection is operated by American, compare American’s cabin dimensions before packing one roller for both flights.
Children, strollers and mobility equipment
A child with a booked seat receives the applicable adult baggage allowance. A lap infant normally gets one checked piece, with weight and size depending on the policy and cabin. Confirm the infant’s own entry rather than borrowing the adult’s dimensions.
The contract gives a lap infant in ordinary Economy or Premium Economy one checked bag up to 23 kg. Its standard size is 115 cm total under the usual policy. Under the special Hong Kong and New Zealand policy, the infant limit is 158 cm total instead.
A collapsible stroller and infant car safety seat may be checked free under the published infant provisions. A cabin stroller needs space available and must meet the specific 7 kg and 56 x 36 x 25 cm stroller limit. That depth differs from the ordinary cabin suitcase limit.
For the cabin, the child provisions also allow a small bag of food and diapers for the journey and an approved restraint seat. Confirm restraint approval and seating arrangements before travel. Our food screening guide helps separate security questions from baggage entitlement.
Mobility aids and assistive devices are accepted in addition to the baggage allowance. Arrange assistance and battery equipment handling with Cathay before departure. Don’t try to solve a wheelchair or medical device question through the ordinary suitcase weight table.
If your cabin bag has to go in the hold
Cabin space and safe stowage still matter when a bag meets the measurements. You or a companion must be able to handle it safely. Avoid packing a case that only works if cabin crew lift it for you.
If staff require the bag to be checked, ask where you will collect it. Keep the baggage receipt. A bag removed at the gate is not automatically returned beside the aircraft at your connection.
Move passports, medication, valuables and electronics you need into the small item before handing the case over. Remove all spare batteries and power banks. Have a pouch ready so this takes seconds rather than a full repack at the gate.
Cathay’s current power bank restrictions
Cathay limits each passenger to two power banks in cabin baggage. They must stay under the seat, never in the overhead bin or checked luggage. Neither using a bank nor recharging it is permitted during the flight.
The airline’s battery rules distinguish power banks from other spare batteries. Protect terminals against short circuits, keep capacity markings readable, and check the applicable capacity category before travel. Don’t assume a large battery is accepted just because you have only one.
For power banks, Cathay’s passenger safety explanation specifies a capacity under 100 Wh. Choose a clearly labeled bank below that threshold. Don’t treat the separate 100 to 160 Wh spare battery category as automatic permission for a larger power bank.
Smart luggage requires special care if its battery supplies charging or powered wheels. Cathay’s policy requires the battery to be removable, subject to its small battery exception. Our power bank guide explains capacity labels; Cathay’s carrier restrictions still control your flight.
A final packing check that catches expensive mistakes
- Open your receipt and record each person’s bag count, weight allowance and operating airline.
- Measure the packed cabin bag and personal item, including protruding parts.
- Weigh both cabin items together unless your confirmed itinerary uses a different rule.
- Measure each checked bag’s three dimensions and add them together.
- Weigh checked bags individually, then price any extra piece or excess before the advance purchase cutoff.
- Put the essentials and battery pouch in the small item that stays with you.
Keep the booking confirmation accessible offline. If a fare, status benefit or itinerary changes, check the baggage entry again. Cathay Pacific baggage allowance is easiest to manage when the ticket details and the packed bags tell the same story.
Cathay Pacific baggage allowance FAQ
Does the personal item count toward Cathay’s 7 kg limit?
Yes. On ordinary Economy and Premium Economy itineraries, the main cabin bag and small item share 7 kg. Eligible Cathay status or special Hong Kong and New Zealand itineraries can change the allowance.
Does Economy Light include checked baggage?
Yes. Cathay’s standard Economy Light allowance includes one checked bag up to 23 kg. Essential and Flex normally include two bags up to 23 kg each, subject to the ticket’s applicable policy.
Can I take a 55 x 40 x 23 cm cabin suitcase?
It exceeds Cathay’s standard 36 cm width limit by 4 cm. The maximum main bag dimensions are 56 x 36 x 23 cm, including wheels, handles and side pockets. Being shorter doesn’t compensate for excess width.
Does Premium Economy give me 10 kg of cabin baggage?
Normally, Premium Economy shares the ordinary 7 kg combined limit with Economy. Cathay Silver or Gold can raise it to 10 kg, and Diamond to 15 kg. Qualifying Hong Kong and New Zealand journeys have separate piece rules.
Where can I confirm my exact Cathay Pacific baggage allowance?
Check your e-ticket receipt and Manage Booking with your membership number attached. Confirm the operating airline for every flight. For mixed carriers, check cabin rules separately from the policy that determines checked baggage.
