Singapore Airlines baggage allowance: cabin and checked bags

Separate the 7 kg cabin limit, slim personal bag and ticket-based checked allowance. Compare fare rules, connections and useful packing examples.

Singapore Airlines baggage allowance includes one cabin bag in Economy and Premium Economy, or two in Business, First and Suites. Each piece may weigh up to 7 kg, with length + width + height totaling no more than 115 cm. Checked baggage uses either a combined weight allowance or a piece allowance, depending on your itinerary.

The easiest packing mistake is treating those allowances as one shared pot. A 30 kg checked allowance does not reduce your cabin allowance to whatever remains. Your cabin bag, small additional item and checked luggage each need the right check.

Start with the three bags you actually want to take

BagPublished limitWhat to check
Main cabin bag7 kg per piece; 115 cm combined dimensionsOne piece in Economy/Premium Economy; two in Business/First/Suites
Small additional bag40 x 30 x 10 cm for listed handbag, camera, document or laptop bagsOne additional listed item, subject to applicable country restrictions
Checked luggageWeight concept or piece conceptFare, route, cabin, status and the allowance printed on your ticket

These cabin limits come from the Singapore Airlines cabin policy. A bag also needs to stow securely in the overhead compartment or under the seat. Passing the arithmetic alone does not make an awkward rigid object suitable.

115 cm is a sum, not a suitcase height

Measure the packed bag at its widest points, including wheels, fixed handles and filled outside pockets. Add its three outside dimensions. Use the actual closed bag, especially if an expansion zipper changes its depth.

Here is a hypothetical comparison. A 55 x 40 x 20 cm case totals exactly 115 cm. Expanding that same case to 25 cm deep makes the total 120 cm, which exceeds the published sum.

Those example dimensions are not a separate official suitcase template. Singapore Airlines publishes the combined measurement, alongside the safe stowage requirement. An unusually long tube can pass a sum while still being unsuitable for the available compartment.

Three separate Singapore Airlines packing checks: cabin dimensions, cabin weight and checked allowance
Original planning diagram. Example suitcase measurements illustrate the published combined size rule.

Weight deserves its own check after size. A hypothetical 3.2 kg empty suitcase leaves 3.8 kg for contents within a 7 kg limit. A 1.8 kg bag leaves 5.2 kg, which is 1.4 kg more packing capacity.

That difference can matter more than another organizer pocket. Compare empty weight and exterior measurements in our guide to choosing carry-on luggage. Leave room for purchases rather than planning to arrive at the airport exactly on the scale limit.

The personal item is genuinely slim

A 40 x 30 x 10 cm allowance is not a typical stuffed daypack. Ten centimeters is about 3.9 inches. A laptop sleeve with a charger bulging from its front pocket may already need a second measurement.

The airline lists one additional item, with country restrictions where applicable. Its examples include a handbag, camera bag, document bag and laptop bag. An umbrella, coat, certain dependent mobility items and infant supplies also appear in that list.

Do not interpret the list as permission to add one of everything. Choose your planned additional article and keep other ordinary belongings inside the permitted bags. Our underseat bag guide explains why advertised capacity is a poor substitute for packed depth.

For the listed small bags, check each side against 40 x 30 x 10 cm. The policy also says an item over 80 cm combined dimensions counts toward the standard cabin allowance. It does not turn every shape totaling 80 cm into an approved personal bag.

There is no separate general personal bag weight figure in that cabin table. Avoid inventing another 7 kg entitlement from that omission. The clear 7 kg figure applies to each main cabin piece.

Singapore Airlines baggage allowance for checked luggage

Find the allowance field on your actual ticket before buying another bag. It tells you which system governs your journey. Mixed cabins, partner flights and status can make a general table insufficient.

Most destinations: total checked weight

Outside Canada and the United States, the airline publishes these standard weight allowances. Multiple checked bags may share the total. Each individual bag still has a 32 kg handling ceiling.

Cabin and fareStandard checked total
Economy Lite or Value25 kg
Economy Standard or Flexi30 kg
Premium Economy35 kg
Business40 kg
First or Suites50 kg

For example, two hypothetical checked bags weighing 16 kg and 14 kg total 30 kg. That meets an applicable 30 kg allowance. One suitcase weighing 34 kg does not become acceptable simply because a Business ticket includes 40 kg.

These figures describe your checked allowance, not a household pool. Use your own ticket entitlement when calculating the total. Arrange bulky or unusual equipment separately rather than assuming a generous weight allowance guarantees loading.

Canada and the United States: count pieces too

CabinStandard checked allowance
Economy or Premium EconomyTwo pieces, up to 23 kg each
Business, First or SuitesTwo pieces, up to 32 kg each

Under this piece system, each standard checked bag must total no more than 158 cm in length + width + height. A 26 kg bag and a 20 kg bag do not satisfy two 23 kg limits. Repacking to 23 kg in each resolves the weight imbalance, assuming both bags meet the size limit.

See the airline’s checked baggage tables and connecting airline rules for your itinerary. The published table includes Canada as well as the United States. Do not assume that every itinerary touching North America has an identical allowance.

Status adds checked capacity, with operator conditions

On applicable Singapore Airlines operated flights, the weight table adds 20 kg for KrisFlyer Elite Gold or Star Alliance Gold. It adds 10 kg for KrisFlyer Elite Silver. PPS Club adds the same weight as the underlying cabin allowance.

Under the published Canada/US piece table, PPS Club adds two pieces. The listed Gold and Elite Silver categories add one piece. Its weight per piece follows the relevant cabin limit.

Check that the membership is attached to the booking. These benefits do not automatically transfer to every codeshare operator. An infant also does not inherit the parent’s extra membership allowance.

Excess baggage: choose the right purchase, at the right time

First identify whether you need more total weight, another piece or permission for an oversized item. Those are different charge categories. Buying additional weight does not remove the 32 kg maximum for an individual checked bag.

For eligible tickets issued and entirely operated by Singapore Airlines, advance purchases remain available until six hours before departure. The standard published discounts are 25% more than 48 hours before departure. Purchases within 48 hours and up to six hours before departure receive 10% off standard rates.

The official additional baggage schedule lists route bands, deadlines and restrictions. Purchases under the weight system normally use 5 kg blocks. Extra discounts can be available when logged into a KrisFlyer account.

Worked fee example, checked October 17, 2026: Singapore to Thailand falls in weight Band 1. The published advance rate is USD 6 per kg when purchased more than 48 hours before departure. A 5 kg block therefore calculates to USD 30, subject to the actual booking quote.

That example assumes an eligible Singapore Airlines ticket and operated itinerary. It is not a universal fee per suitcase. Currency conversion, exact discount calculation and additional membership offers can affect the quoted amount.

Yangon has a specific exception: advance extra baggage purchases are unavailable for travel to Yangon. From Yangon, the published advance maximum is 30 kg. Check the route restriction before relying on an online purchase at the last moment.

Other partner itineraries may require excess baggage payment at the departure airport. A Singapore Airlines and Scoot journey on one ticket has its own advance purchase arrangement through the airline. Do not assume the ordinary online process works for every connection.

A Singapore Airlines flight number does not settle every connection

Read the words “operated by” for each sector. Cabin rules belong to the airline carrying you on that flight. An SQ flight number on another operator does not make the Singapore Airlines cabin table universal.

Checked rules on a single ticket can follow the most significant marketing carrier. For travel to or from Canada or the US, the first marketing carrier determines which policy applies. Use the ticket’s recorded allowance rather than guessing from the longest flight.

Separate tickets retain their own printed baggage allowances. Do not assume bags will be transferred automatically or that a larger allowance carries onto the next booking. Ask where the bag is tagged and whether collection and another check-in are required.

For a connection involving Air New Zealand, compare its cabin and checked baggage rules before packing. For a separate Cathay Pacific booking, use the Cathay Pacific guide. Check the smaller cabin entitlement against the same packed bag.

Traveling with children or essential equipment

Infant luggage and a stroller are separate decisions

An infant receives 10 kg checked baggage under the weight concept. Under the piece concept, the allowance is one piece up to 23 kg or 32 kg, depending on cabin. Eligible infant equipment includes one collapsible stroller or pushchair, plus one carrycot or car seat.

A compact stroller carried in the cabin counts as a cabin piece. It must weigh less than 7 kg and total no more than 115 cm. It also needs suitable packaging, overhead fit and space available on the aircraft.

That means a cabin stroller can consume the slot you intended for a roller. A stroller checked at the gate has a different retrieval process. Confirm the return location with staff, since aerobridge collection is unavailable at some destinations.

Singapore departures allow an additional 6 kg for infant food, breast milk and amenities. Country restrictions may differ when departing elsewhere or transiting. The airline’s family travel guidance explains these conditions and stroller handling.

Children’s checked allowance follows adult fare conditions. Keep the child’s own ticket handy when planning bags. Do not rely on a parent’s status allowance as an automatic family benefit.

Mobility aids need arrangements, not suitcase arithmetic

Wheelchairs and other accepted mobility aids do not count toward the free baggage allowance. They are checked without an additional charge, subject to carriage requirements. Aircraft hold dimensions can affect whether a particular aid can travel.

Battery powered aids require airline approval. Contact Singapore Airlines at least 48 hours before departure with the relevant specifications. Its mobility assistance page lists aircraft dimensions and battery conditions.

Keep medication and supporting documents in your cabin bag. Arrange electrical medical equipment requirements in advance. A passenger needing assistance should request it rather than build a packing plan around unaided lifting.

If a cabin bag is taken for the hold

Checks can happen at check-in and before boarding. A bag exceeding the cabin limits can be placed in the cargo compartment. Excess charges can apply when it pushes the combined checked weight or pieces beyond your allowance.

There is no reason to build a budget around a guessed flat gate fee. The useful question is whether the resulting checked total exceeds your entitlement. Resolve an overweight roller before bag drop whenever possible.

Keep a small removable essentials pouch ready. Move your passport, medication, valuables, power banks and spare batteries out before surrendering the bag. Check where to retrieve it and keep the baggage receipt.

Power banks: the cabin location matters too

Singapore Airlines currently limits passengers to two power banks. Units up to 100 Wh need no prior approval. Units above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh require approval and the documentation requested by the airline.

Power banks and spare batteries belong in the cabin, protected against damage and short circuits. Power banks must remain accessible rather than in an overhead compartment. Using or charging them is prohibited throughout the flight.

Read the current battery and restricted item policy before travel. Our power bank packing guide helps interpret capacity labels. Departure and connection countries can impose further restrictions.

Liquids screening is another separate check. A cabin bag within size and weight limits can still contain an item security refuses. Use our liquids guide to prepare the toiletry bag for the checkpoints on your route.

Before you leave: a five minute packing audit

  1. Read the ticket’s checked allowance and the operating airline for every sector.
  2. Measure the closed cabin bag, then weigh each permitted main cabin piece separately.
  3. Check the small additional bag’s depth and count your separate articles.
  4. Compare checked weight, piece count and any size condition with the applicable allowance.
  5. Save the booking quote for extra baggage and keep batteries ready to remove from any surrendered bag.

Singapore Airlines baggage allowance is easier to apply when each bag has a clear role. Keep immediate essentials accessible, put ordinary bulk in the correct allowance and verify unusual equipment early. That leaves fewer decisions for the boarding gate.

Frequently asked questions

Does Singapore Airlines allow a 7 kg cabin bag plus checked luggage?

Yes. The 7 kg allowance applies to each permitted main cabin piece, separately from the checked allowance on your ticket. Economy and Premium Economy permit one main cabin piece; Business, First and Suites permit two.

Can I bring a laptop bag as well as my cabin suitcase?

Yes, a laptop bag is one of the listed additional items. The published small bag dimensions are 40 x 30 x 10 cm. It is one additional listed article, not permission to add several separate bags.

Can I split a 30 kg checked allowance between two suitcases?

Yes, where your ticket uses the weight concept. Their combined weight must stay within 30 kg, and neither bag may exceed 32 kg. Under a piece allowance, each bag must meet its own permitted weight.

Does Premium Economy get two cabin bags?

No. Singapore Airlines permits one main cabin piece up to 7 kg in Premium Economy. Two main cabin pieces are the allowance for Business, First and Suites.

Can I pay to take a 10 kg suitcase into the cabin?

Do not assume payment buys a heavier cabin entitlement. The published limit remains 7 kg per main cabin piece. An overweight bag can be checked, with excess checked baggage charges if the applicable allowance is exceeded.

How should I confirm Singapore Airlines baggage allowance for a mixed airline journey?

Use the checked allowance printed on each ticket and verify the operating carrier’s cabin rules for every flight. A single ticket can have a governing checked baggage policy. Separate tickets retain their own allowances.
