WestJet carry-on size and baggage rules

WestJet cabin bag dimensions, UltraBasic exceptions and checked baggage explained, with connection examples and current fee comparisons.

WestJet carry-on size is 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in), including wheels and handles. The personal item limit is 41 x 33 x 15 cm (16 x 13 x 6 in). The bigger question is whether your fare includes that overhead bag.

UltraBasic usually gives you just the smaller personal item. Europe and Asia journeys have an exception, as does Extended Comfort bought for every flight in a direction. Sort out that entitlement before buying a suitcase or paying for a seat.

WestJet carry-on size: two different bag allowances

A backpack isn’t automatically a personal item. A packed travel backpack can be your larger carry-on, while a compact purse or laptop bag fills the smaller allowance. The category follows its packed size, rather than its name.

Use the dedicated WestJet carry-on policy as your size reference. Its dimensions also agree with the current flight terms and April 2026 tariff.

Why older WestJet measurements look different

The old limit was 53 x 38 x 23 cm. The current shape is taller but narrower, so an old compliant suitcase isn’t automatically compliant now. One Extended Comfort FAQ still displays the older dimensions in a later subsection.

That difference matters more than the word “relaxed” in older announcements. A suitcase can gain height clearance and lose width clearance at the same time. Compare each side of your actual bag with the current limit.

UltraBasic: can you actually bring the roller?

For Econo, Member Exclusive, EconoFlex, Premium, PremiumFlex, Business and BusinessFlex, the normal cabin entitlement is one larger bag plus one personal item. UltraBasic’s standard entitlement is one personal item. You can’t simply purchase a standalone carry-on allowance for an otherwise ineligible UltraBasic trip.

When an UltraBasic overhead bag is included
Your situationWhat to plan for
Travel to or from Europe or AsiaOne carry-on and one personal item
Extended Comfort purchased on every flight in one direction, including connectionsOne carry-on and one personal item for that direction
Neither exception appliesPersonal item only; arrange checked baggage if you need more space

“International” isn’t a useful shortcut here. Mexico and the Caribbean aren’t Europe or Asia. A Canada to Cancun ticket doesn’t gain an overhead allowance merely because it crosses a border.

Extended Comfort is a seat purchase you can make during booking, in Manage Trips, in the app or at check-in. Availability and price depend on the flight. The Extended Comfort details explain how to select it.

A connection is where the expensive mistake happens

Hypothetical example: you’re flying Vancouver to Calgary to Cancun on UltraBasic. You select Extended Comfort for Calgary to Cancun but leave Vancouver to Calgary in a standard seat. That doesn’t satisfy the requirement to buy it on every flight in that direction.

Look at both seat selections before paying. Then repeat the check for your return itinerary; a purchase for the outbound trip doesn’t establish your inbound allowance. Save the confirmation showing which flights have the benefit.

UltraBasic packing decision: Europe or Asia travel includes an overhead bag; otherwise Extended Comfort must cover every flight in that direction, or use a personal item and checked baggage.
Make the fare decision first. A bag that fits the size limit can still be excluded by UltraBasic.

Compare the whole trip, not one upgrade price

Write down three totals: the fare with checked baggage, the fare with all required Extended Comfort seats, and the next fare you would consider. Include the return trip and each traveler who needs a bag. Only then does the cheapest workable choice become clear.

A checked bag may solve packing capacity but change your airport routine. An overhead bag may be easier for a short connection, yet still require checking on a small aircraft. Pay for the benefit you actually need rather than treating every baggage purchase as interchangeable.

Measure your packed bag before choosing luggage

  1. Pack it as you intend to fly, including the front pocket and toiletry pouch.
  2. Close the expansion zip unless the expanded dimensions remain within the allowance.
  3. Measure the full outer shape, including wheels, handles and bulging pockets.
  4. Check all three measurements separately. A smaller height doesn’t offset an excessive width.
  5. Repack and measure again if you remove anything. Don’t rely on a squishable bag staying small when stuffed.

Calculated example: an older case measuring 53 x 38 x 23 cm exceeds today’s width allowance by 2 cm. Its total of 114 cm is below the current three sides’ total of 115 cm, but that doesn’t make it fit. Cabin dimensions aren’t a combined linear allowance.

Another example: a backpack packed to 40 x 30 x 20 cm is short enough and narrow enough for the personal item limits. Its 20 cm depth is the problem. Flattening its front pocket would need to reduce the actual packed depth to 15 cm or less.

Shopping by “22 inch cabin suitcase” alone misses these details. Our carry-on luggage comparison explains how to distinguish case measurements from overall dimensions. For a personal item, compare the packed shape with our underseat bag guide.

Checked bags: allowance first, price second

A standard WestJet checked bag is limited to 23 kg (50 lb). Its combined length, width and height limit is 157 cm (62 in). That combined measurement works differently from the cabin limits.

An included first bag doesn’t waive its size or weight restrictions.

EconoFlexFirst checked bag
Premium or BusinessFirst and second checked bags
Econo or Member Exclusive to or from AsiaFirst checked bag
Silver or Gold RewardsFirst and second checked bags
Platinum RewardsFirst, second and third checked bags

The eligible WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard benefit covers a first checked bag. It extends to the primary cardholder and up to eight guests on the same reservation, subject to booking terms. Benefits don’t stack into extra pieces.

Confirm the applied allowance in your reservation rather than adding separate entitlements together.

Useful fee examples, with the route and currency attached

The following first bag examples come from the current fare based service fee table, checked October 17, 2026. They apply to travel within Canada or to and from the United States, without an included bag benefit.

First standard checked bag, Canada and U.S. fee examples per direction
FarePrepaidOnline check-inAt airport
UltraBasic$55 to $65$70 to $83$80 to $94
Econo / Member Exclusive$45 to $53$60 to $71$70 to $83

These are CAD or USD amounts according to the booking’s origin, with the published ranges reflecting taxes. Departures outside Canada and the U.S. are charged in local currency.

Exact pricing also depends on purchase date, itinerary and eligibility; confirm the displayed total before paying.

Prepay up to 24 hours before departure for the lowest published first and second bag pricing. Rewards members without free baggage may qualify for lower prepaid first bag pricing when their membership ID is attached before purchase. Don’t wait until the airport expecting that discount.

For a journey starting in Canada, keep the quoted Canadian amount beside your budget. For a different origin, write down the actual currency alongside the number. A bare “$55” in a saved screenshot isn’t enough to compare two itineraries.

Heavy bags, large bags and aircraft limits

Oversized baggage can be accepted up to 203 cm (80 in) combined, subject to restrictions. The general overweight ceiling is 45 kg (100 lb), but Europe travel has a lower 32 kg (70 lb) ceiling. Neither ceiling is a free standard allowance.

Normal bag fees and excess charges can apply together. The general baggage hub and newer fare tables display different excess fee figures, so use your booking’s current quote. Don’t budget from an older universal surcharge.

WestJet generally permits up to four checked pieces, Encore three, and Kingston, Jamaica, two. Consult the baggage hub before planning extra pieces or sporting equipment. Arrival earlier than the usual check-in recommendation is sensible when an unusual bag needs handling.

What happens at the gate?

An oversized cabin bag can be sent to the hold. For an UltraBasic traveler without a qualifying exception, arriving with an overhead bag can mean both a checked bag fee and a service fee. A successful trip with the same backpack last year doesn’t establish a future exemption.

Even a compliant bag can be checked when cabin space runs out. Encore turboprops have less storage, and WestJet warns that bags may need checking despite fitting the sizer. Keep what you need during the flight in your smaller bag.

Before handing over a roller, move your documents, keys, valuables and essential medication into the bag staying with you. Remove your power bank and spare batteries too. Tell the agent if anything needs special handling rather than discovering it after the bag has gone.

WestJet’s March 19, 2026 battery advisory requires rechargeable devices such as phones and laptops in cabin baggage. Pack for a possible gate check from the start.

The advisory limits each passenger to one power bank, kept on you or in the seat pocket rather than overhead. You cannot recharge the power bank onboard. You also cannot use it to charge another device when onboard power is available.

Children, medical equipment and pets

An infant diaper bag is an additional permitted item when it contains infant supplies. A lap infant doesn’t receive an extra adult suitcase allowance.

Two eligible infant equipment pieces can be checked without charge for a lap infant. These can include a stroller and approved car seat.

For children aged two to eleven, the fare determines their regular bag allowance. The general baggage policy provides one additional eligible equipment piece for a fare paying child. A stroller wagon isn’t an automatic substitute for a gate checked stroller.

For an infant under two with a purchased seat, the family page and tariff descriptions differ about equipment pieces. Confirm that particular arrangement with WestJet before arriving with two free equipment items. Keep the written response with the booking.

Personal medical devices are excluded from the usual bag allowance, but approval and safe stowage requirements still apply. For a CPAP or other powered equipment, review the medical equipment requirements before travel. Don’t rely on the seat’s power port for a medical device.

If you can’t lift a bag because of a disability, request assistance instead of interpreting the lifting rule as a prohibition on travel. Explain the equipment and help you need ahead of time. A cabin pet kennel counts as your personal item, so plan the remaining pieces around it.

Connections and security are separate checks

These WestJet carry-on size rules cover WestJet and WestJet Encore operated flights. Read the “operated by” line for each connection. A WestJet flight number doesn’t make a partner aircraft’s cabin identical.

Checked baggage rules on a partner itinerary can also differ. Inspect the allowance printed on the ticket and ask the first operating carrier if it isn’t clear. On separate tickets, plan and price each journey independently.

If the other leg is on Air Canada or Delta, compare our Air Canada bag guide or Delta cabin guide before choosing your bag. Aim to fit the tightest relevant allowance rather than averaging two airlines’ limits.

Security approval doesn’t establish baggage entitlement. Our liquids guide explains checkpoint packing. Duty free shopping must fit within the airline’s bag entitlement; keep room for purchases instead of assuming a third shopping bag is free.

WestJet baggage questions

Can I pay to add a carry-on to UltraBasic?

Not as a standalone bag purchase. Extended Comfort on every flight in a direction is a qualifying route to an overhead allowance. Europe and Asia travel also has a carry-on exception.

Is a backpack a personal item on WestJet?

Only when its packed dimensions fit the personal item limit and it fits under the seat. A full size travel backpack can count as your larger carry-on instead. Check depth after filling the outer pockets.

Does WestJet have a 7 kg cabin bag limit?

The general carry-on policy doesn’t publish a 7 kg maximum. It uses size and the ability to lift and stow the bag, with disability assistance available. Check partner operated flights separately.

Does Extended Comfort on one connection cover the whole trip?

No. The UltraBasic exception requires Extended Comfort on every flight in that single direction, including connections. Check the return direction separately.

Will a correctly sized bag always stay in the cabin?

No. Limited storage can still require checking, especially on Encore turboprops. Pack documents, valuables, medication and permitted batteries so they can stay with you.

Your last packing check

  • Match each traveler to their fare and actual bag benefit.
  • Check every connection’s operator and any required Extended Comfort purchase.
  • Measure the packed bag, not its product label.
  • Confirm checked bag counts, currency and prepaid price before the deadline.
  • Keep essential items accessible if the larger bag goes to the hold.

WestJet carry-on size is only one part of a workable packing plan. Once the fare, physical fit and connection rules all agree, you can stop guessing at the gate.
