This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at Air New Zealand Baggage Rules.

Air New Zealand caps every checked bag at 32kg (70lb) and 158cm (62 inches) total linear size. That ceiling applies no matter which fare paid for the ticket.

Below that ceiling, the Air New Zealand checked baggage allowance still shifts by fare and route. The piece count in your booking matters more than the headline number.

Checked bag allowance by fare

On domestic New Zealand routes, a Seat+Bag or Flexi Change fare includes one checked bag. Flexi Refund includes two, per the airline’s own checked baggage page.

Internationally, The Works, Works Flexi and standard Economy carry one bag. Premium Economy carries two. Business Premier and Business Premier Luxe carry three, with no extra bags sold at any price.

Elite and Koru Gold or Star Alliance Gold status adds a free piece on top of the Air New Zealand checked baggage allowance. That matches the status perks the parent record already lists for carry-on bags.

Fare or statusChecked piecesWeight per piece
Domestic Seat+Bag, Flexi Change123kg / 50lb
Domestic Flexi Refund223kg / 50lb
International Economy, The Works123kg / 50lb
International Premium Economy223kg / 50lb
Business Premier, Business Premier Luxe323kg / 50lb

A handful of routes get an extra bag folded into the Economy allowance, per the carrier’s own page. Shanghai, Singapore and Taipei each include two bags. Some Australia departure fares to North America and Honolulu do too.

Every piece, on every fare, still tops out at 158cm of combined length, width and height. Go past that and the bag is charged as oversize instead of refused.

What cannot go in a checked bag

Air New Zealand’s own baggage page rules out computers, cameras, jewelry and other valuables from the hold. Fragile goods are also excluded, on top of the standard FAA prohibited items list.

Smart bags with a built in battery are allowed only if the battery is non removable. It must also stay under 0.3 grams of lithium metal. Or 2.7 watt hours of lithium ion capacity, whichever the battery type calls for.

A smart bag with a removable battery has to travel with the battery taken out. The battery then rides in the cabin instead, per the same page.

A battery powered luggage tracker follows the same limit, or has to be powered off for the flight. Sporting equipment like skis and golf bags usually counts as one checked piece within the normal weight limit. Declare it at check in rather than assume it is automatically oversize.

Connecting flights and codeshare tickets

Air New Zealand’s page states plainly that a multi ticket journey has each ticket’s baggage rules applied separately. A connecting flight bought as a second reservation does not inherit the first flight’s allowance.

On a single ticket mixing Air New Zealand with a partner, the allowance follows the most significant carrier. That is IATA Resolution 302, and the US Department of Transportation recognizes the same rule for international itineraries.

In practice, a Star Alliance codeshare routed mostly on Air New Zealand metal usually keeps its allowance for the whole trip. Still confirm it at booking rather than assume.

Overweight and oversize bags

A bag between 23kg and 32kg is charged as overweight rather than turned away. So is one that clears 158cm total. Air New Zealand prices that at USD 70 on flights departing the United States.

Nothing over 32kg is accepted as checked baggage at all. A bag that heavy has to travel as air cargo instead. That is a separate booking with a separate cost.

The airline’s excess baggage tool prices a route in local currency rather than publishing one flat international table. A traveler outside the US should check the fee at booking or check in. Do not assume the USD figure applies.

Weight is checked per bag at the counter. Nothing on Air New Zealand’s own pages describes pooling weight across two checked pieces. Treat each bag’s limit as separate.

Extra bags and what they cost

A bag beyond the fare’s included count costs USD 140 on US departures to any international destination. That is on top of the base fare.

Business Premier and Business Premier Luxe do not sell additional bags once the three included pieces are used. That is unusual among full service carriers. Plan around it before checking in extra golf clubs or an instrument.

Paying online ahead of the airport avoids the highest walk up price on almost every airline. The Air New Zealand baggage fees breakdown covers that timing question in more depth than this page needs.

Packing inside the weight cap

The lightest 25 inch checked cases save real allowance for what actually goes inside them. Air New Zealand weighs the whole bag, not just its contents.

The baggage cost calculator checks whether a second bag or one overweight bag comes out cheaper on a given fare.

A lightweight 25 inch spinner such as the Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch expandable spinner starts several pounds under many hardside cases. That matters most on the exact 23kg line. The general guide to checked baggage weight limits explains why.

The Samsonite Omni PC 24 inch and the larger Samsonite Omni PC 28 inch both stay within the 158cm limit. They also give Premium Economy and Business Premier travelers real packing room across two or three bags.

The Delsey Paris Helium Aero 24 inch checked spinner is a mid weight alternative for a single big trip. Customer reviews commonly note it runs heavier empty than the Maxlite line, which eats into the 23kg cap faster.

Whatever bag gets checked, weighing it at home first with an Etekcity digital luggage scale avoids finding out about an overweight charge at the counter.

Compare the shape of this allowance against a nearby rival on the live Qantas checked baggage page. A Star Alliance long haul partner appears on the Singapore Airlines checked baggage page too.

For the cabin side of this same trip, see the airline’s own carry-on size page. The general guide to how to measure carry-on luggage covers the box this checked allowance does not.

The bottom line

Once the fare is known, the Air New Zealand checked baggage allowance is simple. One bag covers the cheapest international fares, two cover Premium Economy, three cover Business Premier, and 23kg per piece applies everywhere.

The real risk sits at the top end. Nothing over 32kg is accepted as checked baggage at any price, and a bag that heavy has to ship as cargo instead.

Weigh bags before leaving home and keep each one under 23kg on its own rather than hoping for pooled weight. Check a connecting ticket’s own allowance separately whenever the itinerary is booked as two reservations, since the Air New Zealand checked baggage allowance on one ticket never covers the other.

Common questions

How many bags can I check on Air New Zealand Economy?

One bag up to 23kg on most international Economy fares, or two on select routes to Shanghai, Singapore, Taipei and some North America and Honolulu departures from Australia.

What happens if my checked bag is over 23kg on Air New Zealand?

It is charged as overweight rather than refused, as long as it stays under the 32kg absolute maximum; on US departures that fee is USD 70.

Can I pay for a heavier bag instead of a second bag on Air New Zealand?

Yes, up to 32kg per piece, but nothing heavier is accepted as checked baggage and would need to ship as air cargo instead.

Does Air New Zealand allow extra checked bags on Business Premier?

No, Business Premier and Business Premier Luxe do not sell additional bags once the three included pieces are used.

What is the maximum checked bag size on Air New Zealand?

158cm (62 inches) of combined length, width and height per bag, on every fare.

Does my Air New Zealand checked baggage allowance carry over on a connecting flight booked separately?

No, a journey booked as more than one ticket has each ticket’s own baggage rules applied on its own.
