British Airways allows a cabin bag 18 inches wide, four inches more than the US standard. That extra width is the most useful thing in British Airways baggage rules, and almost nobody packs to it.
The full figure is 22 by 18 by 10 inches, or 56 by 45 by 25 centimeters. A bag built for American or Delta wastes most of that allowance.
No weight limit, but there is a test
BA publishes no cabin bag weight limit. What it publishes instead is a condition: you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead locker yourself.
That measurement includes wheels and handles. It is a practical rule rather than a number on a scale.
In practice this favors travelers with heavy, dense items. A camera bag that would fail an 8 kilogram European limit is fine here.
The Basic fare is genuinely different
Most European carriers strip the cabin bag out of their cheapest fare. BA does not.
Economy Basic, sold as hand baggage only, still includes the full 22 by 18 by 10 cabin bag plus a personal item. What it excludes is the checked bag.
Compare that to Lufthansa or SAS, where the equivalent fare leaves you with a personal item only.
The personal item is the strict part
The personal item is 16 by 12 by 6 inches, or 40 by 30 by 15 centimeters. It has to fit fully under the seat in front of you.
Six inches of depth is tight for a loaded backpack. This is the allowance BA is most likely to challenge at the gate.
Every fare includes one, alongside the cabin bag rather than instead of it.
Checked baggage and the overweight band
A standard checked bag is 23 kilograms, about 50 pounds, at 90 by 75 by 43 centimeters. Economy Basic includes none.
Every other Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First fare includes at least one, with more in the premium cabins.
Overweight costs $100 one way per bag, and that band runs up to 32 kilograms. BA does not accept a single bag heavier than that.

How British Airways baggage rules compare
On cabin size BA is the most generous major carrier flying the Atlantic. The 45 centimeter width beats the 40 centimeters used across most of Europe.

Who actually benefits from the extra width
The 45 centimeter width suits soft sided bags and duffels more than hard shells. Most hard shell carry-ons are built to the narrower US frame and cannot use the space.
Travelers carrying suits, camera gear or a folded stroller gain the most. So does anyone who would otherwise check a bag purely for shape reasons.
If you fly BA often, a bag built to British Airways baggage rules rather than the US standard is worth owning. It will still fit everywhere else.

British Airways baggage rules give you unusual cabin room and unusually vague checked pricing. Use the first, and price the second before you book.
