The combined weight rule
KLM weighs the hand baggage and the small bag as one total. Economy and Premium Comfort share 12 kilograms, about 26.5 pounds, and Business gets 18.
The hand baggage itself is 55 by 35 by 25 centimeters, roughly 21.7 by 13.8 by 9.8 inches. Handles and wheels count toward that.
The small bag is 40 by 30 by 15 centimeters and its weight comes out of the same total.
What that means in practice
A cabin roller at 10 kilograms leaves you 2 kilograms for the laptop bag. That is not much once a charger and a water bottle are in it.
Pack by total weight rather than by bag. Weighing the two together at home is the only reliable check.
Heavy items belong in the hold on this airline, not distributed between two cabin bags.
The fare ladder decides your checked bag
Economy Basic and Light include no checked bag at all. Economy Standard and Flex include one.
Premium Comfort Standard and Flex include two. Business Light includes one, and Business Standard and Flex include two.
A standard piece is 23 kilograms, about 51 pounds, at 158 centimeters total. That size cap holds across the ladder.
KLM and Air France are close but not identical
The two carriers share a group and share the 12 kilogram combined structure. Air France publishes a 55 by 35 by 25 cabin bag on the same basis.
The depth figure differs by a fraction of an inch between the two published pages. It is not enough to change what fits, but it is a reminder to check the operating carrier.
On a codeshare, the airline whose aircraft you board is the one whose sizer you face.
How KLM baggage rules compare more widely
The combined weight approach is the group’s signature. Lufthansa and SWISS instead cap the cabin bag alone at 8 kilograms.

When the Basic fare still makes sense
Basic works if you can travel on hand baggage alone and stay inside 12 kilograms. For a short business trip that is realistic.
It stops working the moment you need the hold, because adding a bag later costs more than the fare difference usually would. KLM baggage rules reward deciding at booking rather than afterward.
Compare the Standard fare price against Basic plus one bag before choosing. The gap is often smaller than it looks.
