Overweight and oversize fees
KLM charges overweight fees in bands, not one flat rate. From a European departure to the US or Canada, a bag from 23 to 26.4 kg costs USD 45.
A bag from 26.5 to 29.4 kg costs USD 90. One from 29.5 kg up to the 32 kg cap costs USD 140.
From other regions to the US or Canada the same three bands cost more: USD 70, USD 140 and USD 210. A bag over 158 cm in total dimensions costs USD 285 as an oversize fee, even under 23 kg.
Anything past 32 kg or 300 cm total cannot fly as checked baggage at all. KLM routes it through Air France KLM Cargo instead, a separate booking with a separate bill.
These weight bands are the fees KLM publishes for a checked bag that is over the free allowance but still under 32 kg. Anything heavier is cargo, not baggage, and the KLM extra baggage cost table simply does not apply.
