KLM Checked Baggage

KLM includes zero to two checked bags depending on your fare, and the cap sits at 23 kg per bag in Economy. Business Class bags can go up to 32 kg. Your KLM check-in baggage allowance is decided by fare class first and route second, and that trips up more travelers than the weight limit itself.

Economy Basic and Light fares carry no checked bag at all. Economy Standard and Flex include one. Premium Comfort Standard and Flex include two, and so does Business Standard and Flex, while Business Light includes one.

Check your fare code before you assume a KLM checked bag is included. Basic and Light look similar at booking but differ completely on bag fees.

Size and weight, piece by piece

Each checked bag on KLM can measure up to 158 cm total, length plus width plus height. That works out to about 62 linear inches.

Economy and Premium Comfort bags top out at 23 kg, roughly 51 lb. Business bags can go up to 32 kg, the widest KLM check-in baggage allowance the airline sells.

KLM will not check a bag heavier than 32 kg or larger than 300 cm combined. A bag past that point has to travel as air cargo instead. That means a separate booking and a separate cost.

What extra bags and overweight bags cost

KLM’s own extra and overweight baggage page lists fees by route. They are not flat worldwide.

Those figures were current at the time of writing. KLM has already flagged an increase to some routes from July 2026, so check the fee page before you fly.

For flights within France, Europe or the Caribbean network, overweight bags between 23 and 32 kg are billed in bands. Expect about USD 25 from 23 to 26.4 kg, USD 45 from 26.5 to 29.4 kg, and USD 65 from 29.5 to 32 kg. Routes to the rest of the world carry steeper overweight bands than that table.

What cannot go in the hold

Beyond the standard FAA list, KLM will not accept power banks or spare lithium batteries in a checked bag. They must travel in your carry-on instead.

Electronic cigarettes are also banned from the hold. Self balancing devices like hoverboards with lithium batteries are refused outright.

Electronics with a battery up to 100 Wh can be checked if switched off. Anything over 160 Wh is forbidden entirely.

A smart suitcase with a battery that cannot be removed is not accepted at all. If the battery comes out first, the bag can travel as normal KLM check-in baggage.

Firearms need advance reservation, the correct permits, and a formal declaration at check-in. Sporting equipment like skis or golf bags generally needs to be booked as special baggage ahead of time.

Connecting itineraries

On a codeshare or interline ticket with more than one operating carrier, the rule the DOT uses for these disputes usually decides whose allowance applies. It is generally set by whichever airline operates the most significant part of the journey.

KLM’s own checked baggage terms cover journeys booked entirely on a KLM or Air France ticket. Check with the other airline first on a mixed itinerary.

What happens at the counter

KLM caps checked baggage at 10 pieces per passenger. Travelers on connecting itineraries have reported being reweighed and charged again at a layover, even when the first leg’s bag was within limits.

That points to KLM enforcing weight bag by bag at each check-in point. Do not count on pooling weight across two checked bags at the counter.

Packing light enough to skip the fee
