Brussels Airlines checked bag fees

We have not verified this airline's baggage fees against the carrier yet. Rather than guess, we have left it blank — check the airline before you fly.

This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at Brussels Airlines Baggage Rules.

Economy Basic and Economy Light on Brussels Airlines include no checked bag at all, on any route. That includes flights to and from the United States. Every other fare includes at least one 23 kg bag.

That split is the whole story of the Brussels Airlines checked baggage allowance. It catches transatlantic travelers who assume a long haul ticket comes with a bag.

This page covers the allowance by fare, the size and weight rules, and what stays out of the hold. It ends with the connecting ticket rule on a Lufthansa Group itinerary and the cases that keep a 23 kg bag honest. Fees themselves live in the airline’s baggage calculator, and the page explains how to use it.

Allowance by fare

The airline publishes the Brussels Airlines checked baggage allowance by fare family rather than by cabin alone. The weight per piece follows the cabin, and the number of pieces follows the fare.

FareFree checked bagsPer bag
Economy Basic and Economy LightNone23 kg if bought
Economy Standard123 kg (50 lb)
Economy Comfort and Economy Flex123 kg (50 lb)
Premium Economy Light123 kg (50 lb)
Premium Economy223 kg (50 lb)
Business Light132 kg (70 lb)
Business Comfort, Flex and Business Class232 kg (70 lb)

Every bag in every fare is capped at 158 cm (62.2 in) total. That adds length, width and height, with pockets, wheels and handles included.

Infants under two get one free 23 kg bag, except on Economy Basic and Light. A car seat, infant basket or collapsible stroller travels free as well. Children from two to eleven get the adult allowance.

Weight and size, and the top of the scale

A 23 kg (50 lb) bag is the standard piece. The 32 kg (70 lb) Business bag is the heaviest any fare allows. Brussels Airlines prints no separate per piece maximum on its checked baggage page.

Treat 32 kg as the ceiling, and price anything between 23 and 32 kg through the calculator. Our guide to checked baggage weight limits explains how to measure both figures.

The size rule is strict about what counts. Pockets, wheels and handles are all inside the 158 cm total, in the airline’s own words. A 28 inch spinner lands near that line, and a 30 inch case usually passes it.

What a bag costs when it is not included

Brussels Airlines does not publish one fee table. It prices extra, overweight and oversize bags through a baggage calculator on its site, by route and by fare. It says the cheapest price is on brusselsairlines.com rather than at the airport.

Extra bags can be bought up to 2 hours before departure. More than five additional pieces must be registered with the service center in advance.

Light fare passengers can buy the first bag online or at the check-in counter. Buy it online.

The Brussels Airlines baggage fees page covers what the calculator returns on common routes. The baggage cost tool compares a paid bag against a fare upgrade.

What cannot go in the hold

Brussels Airlines bars battery powered devices from checked baggage. Its list names power banks, drones, electric bikes, Segways, scooters, hoverboards and similar self balancing devices. Spare lithium batteries and power banks travel in the cabin, inside the Brussels Airlines carry-on limits.

Sports equipment has its own page and its own pricing, and it counts separately from the standard allowance. Firearms and other declared items follow the airline’s special baggage rules and need arranging before the day of travel.

Whose allowance governs on a connecting ticket

Brussels Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group. Many US itineraries connect through Brussels onto a Lufthansa, Swiss or Austrian flight, or the reverse. On a single ticket, one carrier’s allowance applies to the whole journey.

The most significant carrier rule decides which one. That is usually the airline flying the longest sector across the Atlantic.

Your ticket receipt states the allowance that applies. The counter follows the ticket, not either airline’s website. Check the receipt before you assume the Lufthansa allowance or the Brussels one.

What happens at the counter

Expect every bag to be weighed, and expect the per piece figure to be applied as written. Two 20 kg bags pass on a two bag fare. One 26 kg bag does not, and it cannot borrow weight from the other.

The fix is to move weight between bags, or into the cabin bag with its own 8 kg cap. A Etekcity digital luggage scale used the night before avoids the repack on the floor. Our overweight and oversize fees guide shows how other carriers price the same bag.

Cases that keep 23 kg honest

A light empty case leaves more of the Brussels Airlines checked baggage allowance for what you pack. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch spinner is one of the lightest cases in its size. It sits well inside 158 cm.

The Maxlite 5 29 inch is light for a big case. A full 29 inch case still reaches 23 kg long before it looks full.

For hardside, the Samsonite Omni PC 24 inch is the week away size. It clears 158 cm with room.

The Delsey Helium Aero 24 inch is the same medium class with a built in lock. Measure any 30 inch case before you buy it for this carrier, since wheels and handles count.

The bottom line

Check the fare before you check the bag. Basic and Light include none in the Brussels Airlines checked baggage allowance. Standard and above include one at 23 kg, and Business fares run to 32 kg.

Pack to 158 cm with the wheels counted, and price any extra through the airline’s calculator online. Brussels Airlines’ checked baggage page holds the fare table above.

The Brussels Airlines baggage allowance record keeps the headline figures.
