EVA Air weighs every checked bag on its own. There is no pooling your 23kg allowance across two suitcases, the way some low cost carriers allow. The EVA Air checked baggage allowance rules make that clear from the start.

The EVA Air checked baggage allowance is generous on paper: two pieces per person in most cabins. The per piece cap is where travelers get caught. That single rule shapes most of this page.

The EVA Air checked baggage allowance by fare and cabin

Long haul routes run to and from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia and New Zealand. The standard checked allowance on those routes looks like this.

Short haul flights within Asia carry the same weight caps. The cheapest short haul Economy fares, Basic and Discount, drop to one piece too. The linear size figure adds length, width and height together, wheels and handles included.

An infant without a seat gets one piece at the same weight as the adult in that class. None of this comes from an aggregator or a guess. It sits behind an expandable section on EVA Air’s own checked baggage page.

That is why it is easy to miss on a quick visit. Fares outside the EVA and UNI Air Fare Family system carry their own allowance, and so do group and award tickets. Both show that allowance on the actual ticket.

What cannot go in the hold, and what needs extra care

Beyond the standard FAA restricted items list, EVA Air draws two hard lines. It will not accept a single piece over 45kg (100lb), and it will not accept anything over 292cm (115in) in total dimensions. Either one has to travel as cargo instead.

Anything between 32kg and 45kg needs advance approval from an EVA Air reservation office. The airline may ask for photos of the packed bag first.

EVA Air also calls out Styrofoam packing by name. EVA Air says it will refuse Styrofoam packing on any segment operated by Air Canada, Alaska Airlines or United.

High value items like jewelry, cash, electronics and documents carry limited liability under international convention rules once checked. Keep those in the cabin instead.

Sporting equipment, musical instruments and pets sit outside the general allowance too. Each has its own separate rules on EVA Air’s site.

Whose rules apply on a connecting itinerary

EVA Air’s own allowance governs the whole trip when every flight is operated by EVA Air or UNI Air. A codeshare or interline partner changes that. EVA Air states that a US or Canadian airport in the itinerary shifts control to the first carrier on the ticket.

That first carrier sets the free baggage allowance for the entire journey. It can override the usual rule of following whichever carrier flies the longest segment.

Star Alliance partners such as Air Canada, United and Singapore Airlines keep their own baggage fee schedule for the segments they operate. So do ANA and Turkish Airlines. Check that operating carrier’s page before you fly.

Overweight and oversize: what it actually costs

EVA Air prices excess baggage by zone rather than a flat fee. The zone charts run from about 140 USD to 300 USD per piece, depending on the route.

A bag that is overweight but still under 32kg (70lb) adds half of one excess piece charge. That is on top of anything else owed.

Push past 32kg and the fee jumps to three times the excess piece rate. Approval is required before travel too. A bag over 45kg cannot be checked at all, at any price.

Oversize works on the same ladder. Between 158cm and 203cm (62 to 80in) adds one excess piece charge. Between 203cm and 292cm (80 to 115in) adds two.

Paying at the counter is the expensive way to handle any of this. EVA Air discounts excess baggage by 10 percent for online purchase, at least four hours before departure.

That cap runs to five prepaid pieces per passenger. The discount does not reach overweight, oversize or pet fees.

Packing to stay under EVA Air’s weight cap

EVA Air checks each bag against its own 23kg or 32kg cap. An empty case that already weighs a lot eats into what you can pack. A Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch expandable spinner is one of the lighter mid size cases sold.

That low empty weight leaves more of a 23kg Economy allowance for actual clothes. The Samsonite Omni PC 24 inch runs heavier empty. It handles ramp abuse better on a long haul route.
