Frontier Airlines Baggage Fees

What is included in each fare bundle

Only the personal item ships free on the base fare. The carry-on is an add-on unless you buy a bundle that includes it, per Frontier’s bag options page.

The base fare shows up cheapest in a search. That is the trap.

Add a Frontier carry-on price and a first checked bag, and the total often lands above a bundled fare. It can also land above a rival airline’s fare from the start.

Overweight and oversize fees, the numbers Frontier does publish

Unlike the carry-on and checked bag charge, overweight and oversize fees are flat and posted.

• Overweight, 41 to 50 lb: $75 per bag, per direction.
• Overweight, 51 to 99.99 lb: $100 to $129 per bag, per direction, depending on booking date.
• 100 lb and over: not accepted as checked baggage.
• Oversize, 63 to 110 linear inches: $75 per bag, per direction.
• Over 110 linear inches: not accepted.

These bands stack on top of whatever the checked bag itself already cost through the calculator. A bag that is both overweight and oversize pays both fees.

Pack a digital luggage scale and weigh at home before you leave. A bag sitting at 51 lb at the counter is a fee you could have dodged by shifting three pounds into a carry-on.

When to prepay and what it saves

Frontier is explicit that bags cost less at booking than at the airport, and less at the airport than at the gate. The exact spread moves with the calculator, but the order never does.

Online comes first, the airport counter second, the gate last. If a Frontier carry-on price shows up when you book, pay it then.

Waiting until check-in or the gate is close to guaranteed to cost more on this airline. A gate agent has no discretion to match the online rate.

Check your bag sizes against the size checker before you leave the house. That way you are not choosing between an oversize fee and leaving something behind at the counter.

The Mastercard bag waiver and other ways to skip the fee

The FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard gives the primary cardholder 2 free checked bags up to 40 lb each on Frontier operated flights. Authorized users on the same account do not get the benefit.

You claim it by linking your Frontier Miles number to the card at booking. You can also claim it at check in with the same account number.

It does not cover codeshare flights. It will not stack with a promotional bag offer either.

Discount Den membership lowers Frontier’s base fares. Frontier’s own optional services page does not list it as a source of a free bag, so treat it as a fare discount, not a baggage waiver.

Frontier’s site lists no general elite tier bag waiver beyond the fare bundles and the Mastercard above. If that changes, it will show up on the same optional services page.

How Frontier’s bag costs compare

Frontier’s structure is close to Allegiant’s. Both airlines charge for a carry-on on the base fare and price checked bags dynamically.

Neither is close to a full service carrier that folds a carry-on and one checked bag into every coach fare. The fair comparison used to be Spirit, which ran the same a la carte model.

Spirit Airlines ceased operations on 2 May 2026 and no longer flies. Frontier and Allegiant are now the two US carriers running this playbook against each other.

Packing around a dynamic fee

The carry-on itself may cost money on Frontier, so some travelers pack everything into the free personal item instead. A soft bag cut close to the 18 x 14 x 8 inch box, like the Narwey personal item bag, squashes down at a tight gate sizer in a way a rigid carry-on cannot.

If you already hold the FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard, link it at booking and the checked bag question mostly disappears. For everyone else, the Frontier carry-on price is worth checking the day you book, since it is the one number on this airline that never sits still.
