ITA Airways Checked Baggage

Alitalia stopped flying in October 2021. ITA Airways took over its routes and its fleet, and the Alitalia check-in baggage allowance people still search for is simply whatever ITA Airways publishes now. There is no Alitalia desk left, no Alitalia baggage tag and no Alitalia fee schedule to check.

Checked allowance by fare, in full

ITA sells four main fare families, and the Alitalia check-in baggage allowance changes sharply between them.

Every piece also has to stay within a linear size of 158 cm. That is about 62.2 inches, adding height, width and depth together.

People who look up the Alitalia check-in baggage allowance on an Economy Light fare are usually surprised. The number is zero, though the old carrier’s cheapest fare still carried a bag.

The absolute weight cap

ITA states plainly that no single checked item can weigh more than 32 kg. That is the same ceiling as the top Business allowance.

A bag over that line does not just cost more. It has to ship as cargo instead of ordinary checked baggage. It may not travel on your flight at all.

Pack heavy items like books or tools across two bags. That beats one bag near the line.

What cannot go in the hold

ITA’s own rules keep several everyday items out of checked bags entirely. Matches, lighters, electronic cigarettes, spare lithium batteries and power banks all stay in the cabin.

Every one of those has to travel with you instead, packed in your carry-on or personal item.

Firearms and sporting equipment such as skis, golf clubs and diving gear are allowed as checked baggage. They need to be declared at check-in, not just dropped at the bag belt.

Connecting and codeshare flights

ITA flags something worth reading before a US connection. For flights to the United States, the marketing carrier’s baggage policy applies rather than ITA’s own rules by default.

That matters on codeshares with Air France, KLM and Delta. ITA states that buying an extra bag on those tickets can only happen at the airport, never online in advance.

Check which airline’s code sits on your ticket confirmation. Do not assume the table above applies end to end on a connecting trip.

Overweight, oversize and the counter reality

ITA’s published overweight fee for a Business Flex bag between 23 and 32 kg starts around seventy dollars within Italy. On long haul routes to Japan, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea or Thailand it can reach one hundred forty dollars.

Oversize bags, those between 158 and 203 cm, cost far more on international routes than domestic ones. Within Italy it is roughly seventy five dollars, elsewhere it can run to three hundred seventy five dollars.

Counter staff on European legacy carriers like ITA typically weigh every bag rather than eyeballing it. A scale at home is cheap insurance against a fee at the desk.

ITA does not publish a policy allowing weight to be pooled across two checked pieces. Treat each bag’s limit as its own hard line, not an average.

Packing to the weight, not just the size

A light empty case matters more on ITA than on a US domestic airline. The 23 kg cap on the Economy fare leaves little room for a heavy shell.
