Korean Air Lost Baggage

Not yet verified. We publish figures only once we have read them off the carrier’s own page. Confirm with the airline before you travel.

This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at Korean Air Baggage Rules.

Korean Air lets you file a delayed bag report online and check its status on a dedicated search page. That makes Korean Air baggage tracking easier than on most Asian carriers. The catch is a 21 day filing window and a bag tag you must still have in hand.

Korean Air publishes the report steps, the status page, a one time expense payment and the claim deadlines. The day count at which a bag is declared lost is the one number it leaves out. This page covers all of it, with the federal rules that apply on US flights.

How to report a bag that did not arrive

Go to the Korean Air baggage counter in the arrivals hall before you leave. The agent opens a Property Irregularity Report, the file that every later step uses. You need the bag tag receipt from check-in, so keep it on your boarding pass.

Korean Air also accepts the report online. Its Property Irregularity form lives on the edocument.koreanair.com site.

The airline says the report must be filed within 21 days of the delay. File at the airport if you can, and use the online form the same day if you cannot.

One rule catches connecting travelers. Korean Air says to report to the airline of your last flight, the carrier you actually flew with on the final leg.

If a partner operated that leg, its counter opens the file, not Korean Air’s. Our guide to reporting a missing bag explains what to bring.

Korean Air baggage tracking after the report

Korean Air runs a status search page for reported delayed bags on its website, under the airport baggage section. Enter the reference from your Property Irregularity Report and your name to see the current status. The airline updates the file as the bag is located and routed.

Statuses read like shorthand, and a bag can sit at located for a day before it moves. For what each stage means, see how to track a lost bag. Keep the phone number on the file current, because delivery is arranged by call.

A tracker in the bag is the best complement to Korean Air baggage tracking. A Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 works with Galaxy phones, and an Apple AirTag 4 pack covers iPhone users. Showing the agent a live location at Incheon while the file says tracing tends to speed the search.

The one time expense payment

Korean Air pays approximately 50 USD, once, for essential items while a bag is delayed. The airline excludes the payment when the destination is your original place of residence. It is a flat payment, not a reimbursement of receipts.

On flights to or from the United States, federal rules require reimbursement of reasonable, verifiable and actual expenses beyond that flat amount. Keep receipts for everything you buy during the delay and submit them with the claim. Our delayed baggage guide covers how to present them.

There is also a fee refund. Korean Air states that excess baggage fees on US flights are refunded after a long delay.

The threshold is 15 hours on flights under 12 hours, and 30 hours on longer flights. Ask for it when you file the claim, since it is not automatic.

Claim deadlines and when a bag is lost

The delayed bag report must be filed within 21 days of the delay. A damaged bag must be reported within 7 days of receiving it. Both windows come straight from Korean Air’s baggage pages, and a late report is grounds for refusal.

Korean Air does not publish the day count at which a delayed bag is declared lost. Under the Montreal Convention a bag is treated as lost after 21 days.

Every Korean Air flight to the United States falls under that convention. Ask the baggage team to move the file to a lost claim at that point.

What Korean Air pays

Korean Air flights to and from the United States are international, so the Montreal Convention sets the limit. The US Department of Transportation puts that limit at 1,519 SDR per passenger, roughly 2,175 USD. The airline pays proven actual loss up to that cap, not the cap itself.

Build the claim around evidence. Purchase receipts, photos of the packed bag, and a dated contents list are what win. Read how lost luggage compensation is calculated before you list values.

Damaged bags on Korean Air

Report damage within 7 days of receiving the bag. Korean Air says compensation is subject to its policy and may not be awarded in some cases.

It excludes minor scratches, dents, flattening, stains and ordinary wear. Sports equipment not in a hard case, including golf clubs, is excluded too.

The airline also lists accessories, locks, name tags, covers, belts and other components as excluded. On flights to or from the United States, federal rules say an airline cannot exclude damage to wheels, handles and straps. Cite that rule if the counter refuses on a US itinerary.

Bags opened by TSA carry a notice inside. Korean Air directs damage from those searches to TSA at 1-866-289-9673, not to the airline. Our damaged luggage claims guide covers both routes.

What travelers report

Traveler accounts of Korean Air delayed bags share two themes. Bags misconnected at Incheon usually arrive on the next day’s flight.

The online status page updates in bursts. A file that looks stuck for a day often jumps to delivery scheduled without warning.

Claims that pay out have a Property Irregularity Report from the airport, receipts and a contents list. The ones that stall were filed online late or against a partner’s flight. Korean Air baggage tracking only shows files the airline itself opened.

Prevention

Pack anything you cannot replace within the Korean Air baggage allowance for the cabin. Check the Korean Air checked baggage rules for what the airline will not carry in the hold.

Tag the outside. A pair of Travelambo leather luggage tags with a phone number reaches you when the airline tag tears off. An itinerary printout inside the bag does the same job for a handler who opens it.

The bottom line

Report at the airport with the bag tag, or online within 21 days. Track the file on the status page, collect the one time 50 USD payment, and keep receipts for the rest. Korean Air’s delayed baggage page sets out every rule above.

Common questions

How do I track a delayed bag with Korean Air?

Use the delayed baggage status search page on Korean Air’s website with the reference number from your Property Irregularity Report. The airline updates it as the bag is located and routed for delivery.

Can I report a delayed bag to Korean Air online?

Yes. Korean Air accepts a Property Irregularity report through its online document site, and it must be filed within 21 days of the delay. Reporting at the airport counter is still the stronger option.

Does Korean Air pay for essentials while my bag is delayed?

Korean Air pays approximately 50 USD once for essential items, unless the destination is your home. On US flights, federal rules also require reimbursement of reasonable, receipted expenses.

What is the deadline to report a damaged bag to Korean Air?

Within 7 days of receiving the bag. Korean Air excludes minor scratches, dents, stains and ordinary wear, and sports equipment not packed in a hard case.

How much does Korean Air pay for a lost bag on a US route?

Flights to and from the US fall under the Montreal Convention, which limits liability to 1,519 SDR per passenger, roughly 2,175 USD, paid on proven actual loss.
