This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at Porter Airlines Baggage Rules.

The Porter Airlines checked baggage weight limit is 23 kg (50 lb) per bag. Every kilogram over it costs 20 to 25 USD.

That per kilo pricing is the detail that hurts. A 27 kg bag pays 80 to 100 USD on top of the bag fee, each direction.

Porter caps size at 158 cm (62 in) total and refuses any single piece over 32 kg (70 lb). This page covers the weight and size rules, which fares include a bag, and the fees by payment channel. It ends with what stays out of the hold and which cases keep you under 23 kg.

Weight and size, and the hard ceiling

Porter states the rule in two lines. Each bag may weigh up to 23 kg (50 lb).

No single piece can weigh more than 32 kg (70 lb). Between those numbers the bag travels as overweight at 20 to 25 USD per kilogram, per direction.

Size is measured as length plus width plus height, up to 158 cm (62 in) per bag. A bag over that pays 100 to 115 USD as oversize, per direction. Our guide to checked baggage weight limits shows how to take both measurements.

Porter says a larger or heavier bag may be accepted at the airport for the fee, if there is space. You need to arrive at least 30 minutes before your recommended check-in time to try. Above 32 kg the answer is no at any price.

Which fares include a checked bag

The Porter Airlines checked baggage weight rule is the same on every fare. What changes is whether the first bag is free.

FareFree checked bagsPer bag limit
BasicNone23 kg, 158 cm
StandardNone23 kg, 158 cm
Flexible and Freedom123 kg, 158 cm
Navigate and Ultimate223 kg, 158 cm

Basic buys a personal item only, and Standard adds the carry-on without a checked bag. The first fare with a free bag in the hold is Flexible. The Porter carry-on size page covers the cabin side of that split.

What a bag costs when it is not free

Porter prices bags by route and by the channel you pay through. The cheapest price is at booking on its website, and the price climbs at every later step.

Its optional services page prices a first bag at 50 to 63.25 USD at booking. The same bag costs 80 to 103.50 USD at the gate.

Those figures apply to Canadian, US and sun destination routes as CAD or USD ranges. They took effect on May 7, 2026. Paying in advance is always cheaper, in the airline’s own words.

The Porter Airlines baggage fees page covers the VIPorter status waivers. The baggage cost tool compares a paid bag against a fare upgrade.

What cannot go in the hold

Porter keeps its restricted items on a separate policy page, and the usual dangerous goods rules apply. Spare lithium batteries and power banks travel in the cabin only.

Sporting equipment counts as one piece of your checked allowance. Bicycles and hunting firearms carry an additional handling fee on top.

Anything valuable, fragile or irreplaceable belongs in the cabin, inside the Porter Airlines baggage allowance. Federal rules on US flights cap the airline’s liability for a lost bag. That cap is not a reason to test it.

Whose allowance governs on a connecting ticket

When more than one airline appears on a single ticket, one carrier’s baggage rules apply to the whole journey. The most significant carrier rule decides which one. Your ticket receipt states the allowance that applies, and the counter follows the ticket, not either airline’s website.

What happens at the counter

Expect every bag to be weighed. Porter’s per kilogram pricing means the scale reading is the fee. A bag at 24.6 kg pays for two kilograms.

Repacking into the carry-on is the usual fix. Porter publishes no weight limit for the carry-on itself.

The limit is per bag, not per passenger. Two 20 kg bags pass, and one 26 kg bag pays 60 to 75 USD. A Etekcity digital luggage scale used the night before pays for itself here.

It matters more on Porter than on carriers with a flat overweight fee. Our overweight and oversize fees guide shows how other carriers price the same bag.

Cases that keep you under 23 kg

The lighter the empty case, the more of the Porter Airlines checked baggage weight you keep for what you pack. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch spinner is one of the lightest cases in its size. It sits well inside 158 cm.

The Maxlite 5 29 inch is light for a big case. A full 29 inch case still reaches 23 kg before it looks full.

For hardside, the Samsonite Omni PC 24 inch is the week away size. It clears 158 cm with room. The Delsey Helium Aero 24 inch is the same medium class with a built in lock.

On a carrier that charges by the kilo, a 24 inch case is a sensible ceiling. It cannot hold 23 kg of ordinary clothes.

The bottom line

Pack to the Porter Airlines checked baggage weight of 23 kg and 158 cm. Porter charges 20 to 25 USD for every kilogram over and refuses anything over 32 kg.

Buy the bag at booking if your fare does not include one, since the gate price is nearly double. Porter’s checked baggage allowance page states the weight and size rules above.

Common questions

What is the checked bag weight limit on Porter Airlines?

23 kg (50 lb) per bag. Bags between 23 and 32 kg pay an overweight fee of 20 to 25 USD per kilogram each direction, and no single piece over 32 kg (70 lb) is accepted.

What is the maximum size of a Porter checked bag?

158 cm (62 in), adding length, width and height. Larger bags pay an oversize fee of 100 to 115 USD per direction, if the airline can accept them.

Which Porter fares include a free checked bag?

Flexible and Freedom include one, and Navigate and Ultimate include two. Basic and Standard include none, so the bag must be bought.

How much does a checked bag cost on Porter?

A first bag runs 50 to 63.25 USD when bought at booking, 60 to 80.50 at airport check-in and 80 to 103.50 at the gate, on Canadian, US and sun destination routes.

Does Porter weigh checked bags at the counter?

Yes, and because overweight is priced per kilogram, the scale reading sets the fee. The limit is per bag, so two 20 kg bags pass while one 26 kg bag is charged.

Does sports equipment count as a checked bag on Porter?

Yes. Sporting equipment counts as one piece of the checked allowance, and bicycles and hunting firearms carry an additional handling fee.
