A bag around 40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 in) slides in without argument. A daypack stuffed to 45 cm tall does not.

The US departure rule
Qatar Airways states that on flights departing from the United States, passengers may carry only one piece of hand baggage and one personal item. It cites TSA regulations.
That overrides the two piece Business and First allowance. It also removes any room for a second small bag beyond the purse or briefcase.
From Doha or Europe the list above applies in full. From New York, Dallas, Chicago or any other US gateway, count your items before you reach the gate. One bag for the bin, one for under the seat, and the coat on your arm.
Free on every fare
