WestJet’s cheapest fare bans the carry-on outright, and you cannot pay to add one. That is the single most important thing in WestJet baggage rules, because most airlines at least sell you a way out.
UltraBasic passengers get a personal item and nothing more. There is no add-on that changes it on a normal North America ticket.
The exceptions to the UltraBasic ban
Two exceptions exist. Europe and Asia routes keep the carry-on on UltraBasic, and so does an itinerary with Extended Comfort bought for every flight in one direction.
Both are narrow. On a typical transborder or domestic Canadian trip, neither applies.
If you need a carry-on, buy Econo or above rather than trying to add one later. WestJet baggage rules do not offer that path.
What the sizes actually are
The carry-on is 22 by 14 by 9 inches, or 56 by 36 by 23 centimeters. This is the standard North American frame.
There is no published carry-on weight limit. WestJet measures rather than weighs.
The personal item is 16 by 13 by 6 inches, or 41 by 33 by 15 centimeters. Every fare gets one, UltraBasic included.
Checked baggage
A standard checked bag is 23 kilograms, about 50 pounds, at 157 centimeters or 62 linear inches. That matches the US majors.
How many you get free depends on the fare and the routing. UltraBasic is the most restrictive here as well.
Econo and above include the carry-on plus the personal item, and add checked allowance as the fare rises.
Why the personal item matters more here
On an UltraBasic ticket the personal item is your entire cabin allowance. 16 by 13 by 6 inches is workable but unforgiving.
Six inches of depth rules out most loaded backpacks. A flat tote or a slim underseat bag is the shape that works.
Measure it packed rather than empty. A bag that bulges is judged on how it looks at the gate.
How WestJet baggage rules compare
The size numbers match Air Canada and the US majors. Nothing unusual there.
The fare restriction is where WestJet sits closer to the ultra low-cost model. Frontier and Allegiant also withhold the carry-on, but both will sell you one.
Not being able to buy your way out is genuinely rare. Treat UltraBasic as a personal item fare and price it accordingly.
Choosing the right fare
Work out what you need in the cabin before you compare prices. If a carry-on is essential, UltraBasic is not a cheaper version of Econo.
The gap between the two fares is often smaller than a checked bag fee. Run the comparison in the baggage cost tool.
Booking UltraBasic and discovering the rule at the airport is the expensive outcome. Rebooking at the gate is not a cheap fix.
The bottom line
WestJet baggage rules use standard sizes with an unusually hard fare restriction. The carry-on is not a paid extra on UltraBasic, it is simply unavailable.
