The Delta baggage rules trap: regional jets
Delta Connection operates a lot of Delta’s shorter routes. On aircraft with 50 seats or fewer, the overhead bins cannot take a full size carry-on at all.
On those flights you keep your personal item and nothing else. Your roller gets gate checked, which Delta does free of charge.
Your bag is tagged at the aircraft door and handed back there on arrival. It costs you a few minutes. It still surprises people who expected an overhead bin.
Check the aircraft type before you pack, not the fare name. A Delta ticket and a Delta Connection ticket look identical until you reach the gate.
What Delta baggage rules allow in the cabin
The carry-on limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, or 56 x 35 x 23 cm, and that includes handles and wheels. The three sides added together must not exceed 45 inches.
There is no published carry-on weight limit. That is unusual among large carriers, and generous next to European airlines.
The personal item has no published dimensions. It simply has to fit under the seat in front of you, which in practice means the officer at the gate decides.
Checked bags and what they cost
Standard checked bags run to 62 linear inches and 50 pounds. Delta One and First allow up to 70 pounds per piece.

How Delta baggage rules treat Basic Economy
Delta Basic Economy keeps the full carry-on allowance on mainline flights. You lose seat selection and flexibility, not overhead space.
That is a real difference from United, which strips the carry-on from Basic Economy. On a like for like fare, Delta is safer if you travel with a roller.
American sits with Delta here, keeping the carry-on on Basic Economy but charging more per checked bag.
The bottom line
Delta baggage rules are among the more forgiving in US aviation. You get a full size carry-on on every mainline fare, no cabin weight limit, and published fees.
The one thing to watch is the regional jet. If your flight number belongs to Delta Connection, plan to gate check.
