On transatlantic routes, economy allows up to three checked bags per person each way. That is once you have bought or upgraded into them.

The size cap on any single piece is length plus width plus height of 158 cm, or 62 inches. That figure applies the same way to every fare.

It is a combined measurement, not a per side limit. A bag that is tall but narrow can still fail it.

What cannot go in the hold

Smart luggage with a sealed, permanent battery is restricted, matching the rule most US carriers now use. Loose spare lithium batteries and power banks are barred from the hold entirely.

They must travel in the cabin instead. The limit is two per person, capped at 100 watt hours each.

When your ticket mixes Aer Lingus with a partner airline on one reservation, a single allowance covers the whole journey. Aer Lingus has formal baggage agreements with American Airlines, British Airways, United, Delta and JetBlue.

It will transfer bags onto dozens of partner carriers this way. Book two separate reservations instead of one ticket, though, and each airline applies its own rules on its own leg.

Overweight and oversize fees

Miss your allowance and Aer Lingus charges by the kilo rather than a flat fee. Arrive within Europe with no bag booked in advance, and you pay for the first 20 kg.

Every kilo above that draws a further per kilo rate. Any bag over your personal allowance draws an excess charge of EUR 10 per kilo.

Transatlantic excess baggage between 23 kg and 32 kg is billed at a flat rate. That rate is EUR 75, GBP 68, USD 100 or CAD 100, on top of any bag fee already paid.

Bag fees and excess charges are both non refundable. A bag also cannot be upgraded to a higher weight tier at the airport on the day of travel.
