Aeromexico Baggage Fees

Aeromexico charges 100 USD to check a bag between 25.1 and 31.9 kg, and 200 USD for 32 to 45 kg, on flights to the United States, Canada, Central America and South America. Domestic Mexico routes charge 700 MXN and 1,300 MXN for those same two bands. Aeromexico baggage fees are not one flat number.

They change by fare and by route. They also change by whether the bag is included at all. Every figure below was checked on Aeromexico’s own site today.

Checked bag fees by fare and route

Aeromexico does not publish a single first and second bag fee that applies everywhere. The fee depends on the fare family and the route. Classic fare starts a change on December 4.

From that date Classic becomes the preferential fare and stops including a free checked bag, except to Europe and Asia.

Those fare figures come from Aeromexico’s own branded fares page. They decide whether a traveler pays anything before a bag ever reaches the scale.

Buying an extra piece beyond your fare’s allowance

Separate from the first bag fee, Aeromexico’s excess baggage tool prices a piece beyond what a fare already includes. On the domestic Mexico routes the tool showed, a first extra piece runs 1,645 MXN in low season and 2,025 MXN in high season. A second extra piece runs 2,025 to 2,405 MXN.

A third through seventh piece runs 2,405 to 2,785 MXN. Aeromexico did not publish a matching international breakdown on that same table. International extra piece pricing is best checked with the calculator at booking.

A bag over 45 kg cannot be checked as ordinary baggage at all. Neither can an eighth piece. Aeromexico sends both through cargo instead, a different counter at a different price.

Overweight and oversize baggage fees

Aeromexico caps a single checked piece at 45 kg. It also caps the combined length, width and height at 1.58 meters, about 62 inches. Go over either limit and the fee depends on the route, not the fare.

Aeromexico is explicit that a bag over 32 kg, about 70 lb, is refused outright to and from Europe. It is not simply charged extra like every other route.

That is stricter than the standard 32 to 45 kg band. Anyone packing heavy for a Madrid or Paris flight should weigh the bag at home, not at the counter.

The Basic fare cabin bag squeeze

Basic fare travelers do not only risk a checked bag fee. Their carry-on and personal item share one combined 10 kg limit. Every other Aeromexico fare gives 15 kg to each bag on its own.

Pack a laptop, a jacket and a pair of shoes into both bags on a Basic ticket, and it is easy to land past 10 kg by accident. Aeromexico sells a way out at booking or at the gate.

An extra 5 kg on top of the Basic combined limit costs 525 MXN in low season or 810 MXN in high season on domestic routes. Internationally it runs 35 USD or 50 USD, with Europe priced in EUR or GBP instead.

That fix only buys 5 kg. The underlying rule, carry-on and personal item sharing one number, does not change. Read the fare comparison closely before booking Basic on a trip that means packing for cold weather or bringing souvenirs home.

When prepaying beats paying at the airport

Aeromexico’s own excess baggage tool exists to sell extra weight and extra pieces before departure. The site pitches it as a way to skip the line, not as a guaranteed discount. The clearest incentive in the published tables is the season split.

Booking the same extra bag or extra weight during low season locks in the lower price. Booking during high season costs more for the identical piece. There is no separate airport markup percentage published anywhere Aeromexico checked today.

The honest advice is to add bags during booking or check in online. Do not assume a specific gate surcharge, since Aeromexico never states one.

Aeromexico also does not publish which co branded credit cards or elite tiers waive the first checked bag fee automatically. Where Premier and Premier One include free bags internationally, noted above, that comes from the fare itself, not a card benefit.

Anyone counting on a credit card perk for a free Aeromexico bag should confirm the current benefit with the card issuer directly. Aeromexico’s own fare and baggage pages do not state one.

How Aeromexico compares

Against Volaris, the other major Mexican carrier, Aeromexico’s Basic fare plays a similar game. Neither includes a checked bag, and both use a combined cabin weight limit instead of two separate free allowances. The gap shows up on fuller fares.

Aeromexico’s AM Plus and Premier tiers restore a free bag that Volaris rarely matches route for route. Against American Airlines, a common connecting partner on USA to Mexico trips, the overweight bands land in a similar place.

Most US carriers charge roughly 50 to 70 USD for the first overweight tier and 100 to 200 USD for the heaviest bags. Aeromexico’s 100 and 200 USD bands sit toward the higher end of that range for the top tier. A genuinely heavy bag can cost more on Aeromexico than on a comparable American Airlines trip.

Packing to avoid the fee entirely

Check exact under seat measurements against Aeromexico’s stated limits before buying. The carrier’s own pages do not list inch or centimeter dimensions for the carry-on or personal item box.

Aeromexico baggage fees reward planning ahead more than any other trick. They are cheapest for travelers who avoid three traps.

Do not book Basic without knowing the cabin bags share one 10 kg limit. Do not pack a checked bag past 25 kg without weighing it first.

Do not assume a free first bag on a fare that never included one. Fly AM Plus or Premier when the route allows it, and weigh every bag before leaving for the airport. Add any extra piece or extra weight during booking rather than gambling on the counter.
