Economy: 1 cabin bag (8kg/17lb), no stated personal item, 1 checked bag (23kg/50lb). Business: 1 cabin bag (16kg/35lb) plus free laptop, 2 checked bags (32kg/70lb each). First: 2 cabin pieces (16kg+8kg), 3 checked bags (32kg/70lb each). Gold/Platinum economy members get 12kg/26lb cabin allowance.

This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at El Al Baggage Rules.

El Al caps every checked bag at 32kg (70lb), and no fare buys past it. The El Al checked baggage allowance grows with cabin. Economy gets one bag at 23kg (50lb), business gets two at 32kg each, and first class gets three.

The cabin bag rules are separate and live on the El Al carry-on size page instead.

The El Al checked baggage allowance by cabin

El Al’s own ticket conditions set the free allowance by class, alongside the full El Al baggage rules for cabin and personal item limits.

CabinFree checked bagsWeight per bagLinear size limit
Economy123kg / 50lb158cm / 62in
Business232kg / 70lb each158cm / 62in
First332kg / 70lb each158cm / 62in
Infant110kg115cm / 45in

The linear figure is length plus width plus height added together. A case can be tall and narrow or short and wide, as long as the total stays under 158cm.

The El Al checked baggage allowance is per ticket, not per family. Some UP fares to Prague, Budapest, Berlin, Larnaca and Kiev carry no free checked bag at all.

The exception is a Y, S or M fare class, or frequent flyer status. Either one restores the free bag.

Anyone booking a low fare on one of those five routes should check the fare class before assuming a checked bag comes with it. It is easy to miss on a budget itinerary that otherwise looks like a normal economy ticket.

The 32kg ceiling El Al will not move

El Al’s own ticket conditions say excess baggage draws an extra charge. They also say a bag may never exceed 32kg, in any case.

That is not a fee band. A bag over 32kg is not simply weighed into a pricier bracket.

It has to be repacked into two bags. Or it ships as air cargo instead.

El Al publishes no fee for crossing 32kg. There is no way to pay past it.

Charges below that line sit on El Al’s baggage fees page. So does how the counter handles an overweight bag.

What El Al excludes from the hold

El Al’s conditions of carriage exclude the airline’s liability for a specific list of items in a checked bag. The list is long.

It covers fragile items, perishables and medication. It also covers money, jewelry, cameras, other electronics, computers, precious metals, business documents and goods for commercial trade.

El Al frames it as a liability list, not a ban. Either way, anything on it belongs in the cabin, not the hold.

El Al’s published terms set no separate rule for smart bags or spare lithium batteries in checked luggage. Standard FAA battery placement rules still apply on any US connection.

A smart bag with a battery that cannot be removed is a common problem on other full service carriers, and travelers should check the battery is removable before checking a bag like that on any route through the US.

Infants, mobility gear and free exceptions

An infant ticket carries its own checked allowance: one bag up to 10kg, with a linear size under 115cm. This allowance does not apply on the UP fares above.

A pushchair, crutches or a mobility wheelchair travel in the hold at no charge. They sit outside the normal checked baggage count entirely.

This is worth knowing before the counter, since gate agents on other carriers sometimes treat a stroller as a second bag. El Al’s own terms list it as a separate, free category instead.

None of this is bag pooling. El Al’s terms describe each piece on its own.

Two light bags and one heavy one do not average out on paper.

Connecting and codeshare tickets

When El Al combines its own flights with a codeshare or interline partner on one ticket, one carrier’s rules usually govern the whole trip. The US Department of Transportation lays out the general standard for this on its own site.

The operating carrier of the first flight typically sets the baggage terms for the rest of the journey. Travelers connecting through a partner hub should confirm which airline that is before packing to the wrong limit.

Fare notes for Gold and Platinum members sit on the El Al baggage fees page. So do codeshare specifics for domestic Israeli legs.

Packing so 23kg does the job

A lighter empty case leaves more of the 23kg or 32kg cap for what actually gets packed. The checked baggage weight limit guide covers how airlines weigh a bag at the counter.

A 24 inch case like the Samsonite Omni PC 24 inch fits well inside El Al’s 62 inch linear limit. It leaves most of the 23kg allowance for contents, not shell weight.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch is built light empty, per the manufacturer’s own listed specifications. That matters most when a fixed cap will not bend.

A digital scale like the Etekcity digital luggage scale answers the one question that counts before leaving home. Is this bag under 23kg, or not.

Anyone comparing carriers before booking can run the numbers on the baggage cost calculator. The overweight and oversize fees guide covers how other airlines price the overage El Al simply refuses past 32kg.

The bottom line

The El Al checked baggage allowance is simple by cabin and rigid at the top. One bag at 23kg in economy, two or three bags at 32kg each in business and first.

A 32kg ceiling sits above all of it, and no fee buys past it.

Pack light and weigh the bag before leaving home. Keep anything El Al excludes from liability, cameras, jewelry, cash, documents, in the cabin instead of the hold.
