El Al economy passengers get exactly one cabin bag, capped at 8kg (17 lb). The airline’s own contract of carriage does not spell out a separate free personal item to go with it. That is lighter than most US carriers allow, and it is the detail that catches people off guard at Ben Gurion or JFK.
Understanding the El Al baggage allowance starts with one fact. El Al measures cabin bags by weight as much as by size. Most US travelers pack for a size limit and forget to check the scale, but on El Al the scale is what gets you.
What El Al Counts as Your Economy Carry-On
Standard economy fares get one cabin piece, weighed at up to 8kg (17 lb). El Al’s contract of carriage lists this as a single item. It is not a bag plus a separate personal item like a purse or a laptop bag.
Gold or Platinum frequent flyers flying economy get a bump to 12kg (26 lb). That allowance can include a laptop. If loyalty status is not on your boarding pass, plan around the lighter number.
How the El Al Baggage Allowance Grows in Business and First
Business class carries one piece up to 16kg (35 lb), plus a laptop computer at no extra weight cost. First class allows two pieces. One tops out at 16kg (35 lb) and a second at 8kg (17 lb).
These allowances apply across the airline’s whole network, not just on US routes. The cabin allowance scales with the fare. A Business upgrade is also a baggage upgrade.
The Fine Print on Cabin Bag Dimensions
El Al’s contract of carriage caps each cabin dimension on its own. Length runs up to 56cm (22 in), depth up to 25cm (10 in), and width up to 45cm (18 in). Treat each figure as its own hard limit, not a total to divide up between the three.
Run your bag through the size checker if you are close to any one of those three numbers.
Checked Baggage by Cabin
Economy gets one checked bag up to 50 lb (23kg). Business gets two bags, each up to 70 lb (32kg). First gets three bags at that same 70 lb (32kg) ceiling per bag.
Every checked bag also has to stay within 62 linear inches (158cm). That is the sum of length, width, and height, the same standard used by Lufthansa and United on the same New York to Tel Aviv corridor.
The 32kg Ceiling Nobody Can Buy Their Way Past
El Al’s contract of carriage sets a firm rule. No checked bag can weigh more than 32kg (70 lb), full stop. Paying extra does not raise this number, unlike overweight fees on some airlines that simply get pricier as a bag gets heavier.
If a bag is going to land anywhere near that mark, split the load into a second bag instead. Check current pricing with the baggage cost tool before you get to the counter.
What El Al Does Not Publish
El Al’s public contract of carriage summary does not list dollar or shekel amounts for excess, overweight, or oversize bag fees. It states only that extra bags are ‘subject to extra charge,’ with no published table.
We are not going to guess at that number and print it as fact. Confirm the current fee directly with El Al, or read the airline’s own contract of carriage before you book.
Infants and Frequent Flyer Extras
Infants on a lap ticket get one checked bag up to 10kg. Total dimensions on that bag are capped at 45 in (115cm). Strollers, crutches, and mobility wheelchairs travel free and do not count against the El Al baggage allowance.
Loyalty status is the other lever worth knowing. Gold and Platinum frequent flyers get a heavier cabin allowance in economy. It is the easiest upgrade to unlock without changing your fare.
Where the 8kg Limit Actually Gets Weighed
Travelers on TripAdvisor’s Israel forum report that El Al enforcement is not just a suggestion at Ben Gurion. One longtime flyer wrote that the airline ‘definitely weighs carry on for economy passengers’ in Tel Aviv, and other posters say it happens at European departure airports too. Several describe it as tougher on US departures, so a bag that slides through once is not a rule you can count on twice.
El Al also tightened its lowest fare tier. Since May 2025, Lite economy tickets between Israel and Europe or the United Arab Emirates must be checked at the counter or gate instead of carried on, though the 8kg weight limit itself did not change. The rule does not touch US routes, and Matmid elite members are exempt.
The Bottom Line
The El Al baggage allowance rewards paying attention to the scale, not just the tape measure. Economy is one light cabin bag with no stated personal item. Checked bags scale cleanly with cabin class, and nothing gets heavier than 32kg no matter what you pay.
Weigh your bag at home and know your dimension limits before you pack. Use the bag finder if your current luggage runs close to any of El Al’s numbers, or see our general carry-on rules guide.
