What Economy actually gets in the cabin
Economy passengers get one cabin bag. It is capped at 7kg and 56 by 36 by 23cm, about 22 by 14 by 9 inches. Etihad does not list a separate personal item on its own baggage pages.
That is unusual among the big Gulf carriers. Treat it as a real gap, not an assumption. Confirm at check in before you count on a backpack riding free next to your bag.
How the Etihad Baggage Allowance Changes for US Departures
Outside the United States, premium cabin flyers get two bags at 12kg combined. Or one bag up to 12kg, plus a small item up to 5kg that fits under the seat. Departing the US, that drops to one 12kg bag only.
The Etihad baggage allowance does not carry the two bag cabin option onto US flights. Pack accordingly out of New York, Chicago or Washington.
Checked baggage limits shift at the same border
On flights to or from the US, Canada, Tunisia or Morocco, most Economy fares include two checked bags. Each can weigh up to 23kg. Business, First and The Residence get two bags up to 32kg each on those same routes.
Everywhere else, Etihad allows several bags within a total weight allowance. No single piece can pass 32kg.
Basic fare skips checked baggage entirely
Etihad’s Basic economy fare carries no checked baggage at all, on any route. Etihad Guest member baggage perks do not apply to it either. Go over the 7kg cabin limit, and Etihad checks the bag for you and bills you.
Buying an extra bag costs more than you would guess
On US and Canada routes, an extra bag bought at the airport runs $260 for up to 23kg. A bag up to 32kg runs $300. Those prices apply to tickets issued from April 2026 onward.

Where Etihad actually enforces the 7kg limit
Etihad’s own page states the 7kg cabin figure, but travelers on FlyerTalk and TripAdvisor describe Abu Dhabi as the place it gets checked hardest. One traveler described gate staff at AUH pulling so many overweight bags that a pile built up next to the gate desk waiting to be checked in. Manchester check in has drawn similar reports, with agents weighing every bag in line.
Travelers consistently report that enforcement can flip from relaxed to zero tolerance with no warning, on the same route they had flown before without issue. One recent traveler described staff checking every bag and weighing it, after years of Etihad never bothering. Nobody in the threads we checked had a direct account of gate enforcement out of a US airport specifically, so treat the 7kg Etihad baggage allowance as the real number everywhere, not just where you have seen it checked before.
What Etihad leaves unanswered
Etihad’s own pages skip an oversize fee and a maximum linear size for checked bags. They do not say what happens if a bag lands over 32kg at the counter.
