Finnair weighs your cabin bag and your small item together, and the total is only 8 kilograms. That is the strictest combined cabin allowance in Europe, and it defines Finnair baggage rules.
Eight kilograms is about 17.6 pounds for everything you carry on. An empty hard shell case can be more than a third of it.
How the combined limit works
The cabin bag is 55 by 40 by 23 centimeters, roughly 21.7 by 15.7 by 9.1 inches. The small item is 40 by 30 by 15 centimeters.
Both are weighed as one total of 8 kilograms in Economy. Business Flex raises that to 12 kilograms.
Other carriers that combine, like Air France and KLM, allow 12 kilograms. Finnair allows two thirds of that.
The cheapest fare has no cabin bag at all
Economy Superlight includes no cabin bag. You get the small item only.
Economy Light includes the cabin bag but no checked bag. Classic and Flex include both.
Read the fare name carefully. Superlight and Light sound similar and behave very differently.
Checked baggage and the unusual size shape
A checked bag is 23 kilograms, about 50 pounds, at 90 by 75 by 45 centimeters. Finnair states three dimensions rather than a linear total.
That shape is slightly deeper than the 158 centimeter linear rule most carriers use. A deep bag that would fail elsewhere can pass here.
On North America routes, Economy Classic and Flex include one bag, Premium Economy two, and Business two at 32 kilograms.
The fees are published, which is rare
A checked bag costs $100 where the fare includes none. A second bag is also $100.
Overweight is $95 and oversize is $95. Both are flat charges rather than bands.
Most European carriers quote per itinerary instead. Finnair baggage rules are more predictable to budget against.
Packing to 8 kilograms
This is the number that decides your trip. Weigh both bags together, not separately.
A soft sided cabin bag saves one to two kilograms over a hard shell. On an 8 kilogram allowance that is a large share of your capacity.
Wear the heaviest layer rather than packing it. Outerwear carried on you is not weighed.
How Finnair baggage rules compare
The dimensions match Lufthansa and SAS. The weight approach does not.
SAS applies its 8 kilograms to the cabin bag alone and does not count the underseat item. Finnair counts everything.

What Superlight actually means
Superlight is the fare where you carry a small item and nothing else. No cabin bag, no checked bag.
It is priced to compete with low-cost carriers on European routes. Treat it as an underseat only ticket rather than a discounted Economy fare.
If you need overhead space, Economy Light is the first fare that gives it to you.
