GOL does not fly a single one of its own planes into the United States. Every route sold as GOL to Miami or Orlando is one ticket. American Airlines flies the actual US leg, under a codeshare deal.

That single fact changes what a GOL baggage allowance actually promises once your trip crosses into the US.

How much you can carry on with GOL

GOL runs on the weight concept, not the piece concept US flyers may expect. The Small Bag for the overhead bin can measure up to 55 by 35 by 25 cm.

It can weigh up to 12 kg, under the limit that applies to tickets issued from October 14, 2025 onward.

A Small Personal Item goes under the seat, capped at 32 by 43 by 22 cm. Basic fare tickets, GOL’s cheapest tier, do not include the Small Bag at all. That holds on both domestic and international routes.

You can still buy the bag separately at booking. Every other fare from Light through Business includes the 12 kg bag as part of the carry-on allowance.

Checked baggage rules by fare

A checked bag on GOL can measure up to 80 by 50 by 28 cm. It can weigh up to 23 kg, and a customer may check as many as 5 bags.

Whether the first bag is free depends entirely on fare class.

Lithium batteries, spare batteries and power banks must ride in the cabin. They cannot go in a checked bag. GOL states this on its own baggage information page, in line with the general FAA rule.

What extra and overweight bags cost

Buying a bag online ahead of time is consistently cheaper than paying at the counter. On domestic routes booked 48 hours out, GOL lists the first bag near R$175 to R$219. The second bag runs near R$220 to R$249.

Wait until the airport and those prices climb toward R$250 and R$275. Going over 23 kg costs even more.

A bag between 23 and 32 kg costs R$275 on domestic flights, by GOL’s own overweight page. International overweight fees run from about R$720 in the Americas to R$855 on European routes. A bag past 45 kg is generally not accepted at all.

When your GOL ticket sends you to the US

GOL and American Airlines say plainly that their combined baggage allowance only holds together on a single ticket. Book both legs as one itinerary, and a GOL baggage allowance carries through to the US segment. Book them as two separate purchases instead, and each carrier applies its own rule.

That gap matters because American works from the piece concept on its flights. That means a flat count of bags, not a weight ceiling like GOL’s.

A traveler who packs to GOL’s 23 kg limit can still meet a different rulebook at the American counter, if the booking was split.

Check both the American Airlines allowance and GOL’s own before a mixed itinerary. Do not check just one of them.

What travelers actually run into

Forum threads about flying GOL, Azul and LATAM inside Brazil agree on one thing. Gate agents eyeball size far more than they pull out a scale.

One frequent flyer on a South America forum put it plainly. Staff mostly check whether a bag fits the sizer.

Large wheeled bags draw far more scrutiny than a soft daypack that slides under the seat. The same threads describe GOL holding at the regulatory minimum. LATAM premium fares grant more room than that.

A separate Foz do Iguacu discussion confirms the numbers travelers actually got quoted at check-in. Checked baggage came in at 23 kg, and carry-on at 10 kg under the older rule, matching GOL’s published figures.

A GOL baggage allowance leaves less cushion for a heavy daypack than some rivals give.

The bottom line

Pack to 12 kg in the cabin and 23 kg in the hold. A GOL baggage allowance will not surprise you at the gate that way. Buy any extra bag online before the airport, since counter prices run noticeably higher.

If your trip continues onto American Airlines metal, confirm the ticket is issued as one itinerary. When it is not, check American’s own rules rather than assuming GOL’s carry over.

Compare this against a regional peer like LATAM or Avianca before a South America trip that mixes carriers. Fare tier rules differ enough between them to change what you should pack.

Run your bag through the baggage cost tool first. Then check anything sharp against the general airport security rules, which apply regardless of carrier.
