LATAM Airlines checked bag fees

We have not verified this airline's baggage fees against the carrier yet. Rather than guess, we have left it blank — check the airline before you fly.

This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at LATAM Airlines Baggage Rules.

The LATAM checked baggage size limit is 158 linear cm (62.2 in). The weight limit is 23 kg (51 lb) per bag.

Both apply on every LATAM route. A bag that breaks either one is excess baggage, and the two surcharges stack, so one oversized and overweight case pays twice.

The LATAM Airlines record covers the cabin allowance. This page is the hold side. Which fares include a checked bag, what the excess bands cost on US routes, the 45 kg ceiling, and how connections change the rule.

Which LATAM fares include a checked bag

LATAM sells four Economy fares on international routes, and only two of them include a hold bag. The carrier’s checked baggage page lays it out by fare and cabin.

FareCabinChecked bags included

LightEconomyNone; costs extra
StandardEconomy1 bag at 23 kg
FullEconomy1 bag at 23 kg
Premium Economy Standard or FullPremium Economy1 bag at 23 kg
Premium Business StandardPremium Business1 bag at 23 kg
Premium Business FullPremium Business2 bags at 23 kg

Basic includes only the small personal item, and Light adds the cabin bag. Neither puts anything in the hold.

LATAM publishes no flat figure for a first or second checked bag. The LATAM baggage fees guide explains how that price is set.

LATAM Pass Black Signature, Black and Platinum members and LATAM Pass cardholders get an extra bag on top of the fare. Those pieces sit outside the fare count.

The LATAM checked baggage size and weight limits in practice

Every checked bag is measured as height plus length plus width, wheels and handles included. The limit is 158 linear cm, which LATAM rounds to 62.2 in. Every checked bag is also weighed, and 23 kg is the line.

The weight and piece allowance belong to one passenger. LATAM states that it cannot be transferred.

Two people cannot pool a 20 kg bag and a 26 kg bag into one 46 kg total. Each piece is judged alone.

Boxes are accepted as checked baggage from the United States only in their original factory sealed packaging. The overall cap is 10 checked pieces per passenger, counting fare bags, paid bags and special baggage.

The site’s guide to the checked baggage weight limit covers why 23 kg became the world standard. And 158 cm is the same 62 in most US carriers use.

What excess weight and size cost on US routes

LATAM’s excess baggage fees page groups routes, and flights to and from the United States fall under other international flights. These are the figures for that group, per piece, one way.

ExcessFee
Overweight, 23 to 32 kgUSD 100
Overweight, 32 to 45 kgUSD 200
Oversize, 158 to 300 linear cmUSD 125
Cabin bag sent to the hold at the gateUSD 130

LATAM says these amounts do not include taxes and can vary with season and route. The charges stack: a 26 kg bag at 170 cm pays USD 100 plus USD 125. On a trip with connections, one excess fee applies from origin to final destination, at the highest value on the route.

Extra bags bought in My Trips up to 6 hours before the flight cost less than at the airport. LATAM puts the saving at up to 40 percent. Unused paid baggage is not refunded and cannot be moved to another date.

The general guide to overweight and oversize baggage fees shows how LATAM’s two flat bands compare with the per kilo pricing some carriers use.

The 32 kg and 45 kg ceilings

With the overweight fee paid, LATAM accepts a single bag up to 45 kg (99.2 lb) on most routes. That includes the United States.

That is unusual; most airlines stop at 32 kg. Above 45 kg or 300 linear cm the bag goes to LATAM Cargo, not the hold.

The ceiling drops to 32 kg (70.5 lb) per bag on some routes: to, from or via Argentina, Aruba, Cuba, Europe, Oceania, South Africa or Venezuela. It also drops to 32 kg on any itinerary connecting with Air Canada, British Airways, Iberia or Qantas. A US traveler heading to Buenos Aires through Lima is on the 32 kg rule.

Connections and partner airlines

Prepaid baggage is only available when the whole route is operated by LATAM. If the trip starts on another airline, extra bags can only be bought at that airline’s airport counter. On a LATAM issued ticket that continues on a partner, the interline baggage page sets the allowance and charges.

Two separate tickets mean two allowances and a bag you collect and check in again. When the tickets are linked, the DOT most significant carrier rule decides whose allowance applies for a US itinerary.

What cannot go in the hold

LATAM keeps its restricted and prohibited list on a separate page, and it follows the usual pattern. Spare lithium batteries and power banks travel in the cabin, never checked. Sports equipment, audiovisual gear and musical instruments are special baggage with their own flat fee rather than ordinary checked pieces.

The site’s page on power banks on a plane covers the watt-hour limits that apply on LATAM as on every carrier.

Packing to 23 kg and 158 cm

LATAM charges USD 100 the moment a bag reaches 24 kg, so the case itself should weigh as little as possible. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch is the usual answer. Customer reviews commonly mention its low empty weight, and its 25 inch size sits comfortably under 158 linear cm.

A 28 inch hardside is where the LATAM checked baggage size limit starts to bite. The Samsonite Omni PC 28 inch fits the 158 cm rule by the manufacturer’s dimensions.

At that size the 23 kg weight limit, not the measuring tape, is what stops you. Anything sold as 30 inches risks the USD 125 oversize band.

An Etekcity digital luggage scale settles the 23 kg question at home. A self locking tape measure settles the 158 cm one. The baggage cost tool adds up what an overweight bag costs against buying a second piece.

The bottom line

The LATAM checked baggage size limit is 158 linear cm and the weight limit is 23 kg. That holds on every fare.

Standard and Full include one; Basic and Light include none. Buy the bag in My Trips at least 6 hours out if you need it.

On US routes, overweight costs USD 100 to 200 and oversize USD 125, charged separately and stacked. A single bag can go to 45 kg on most routes but only 32 kg via Europe, Argentina and the oneworld partners. Weigh the bag before the trip, not at the counter.

Common questions

What is the LATAM checked baggage size limit?

Each checked bag may measure up to 158 linear cm (62.2 in), adding height, length and width with wheels and handles included. Anything from 159 to 300 cm is charged as oversize, and over 300 cm goes to LATAM Cargo.

How much can a LATAM checked bag weigh?

The included allowance is 23 kg (51 lb) per bag. With the overweight fee paid, a bag can weigh up to 45 kg on most routes, or 32 kg on flights via Argentina, Aruba, Cuba, Europe, Oceania, South Africa or Venezuela.

Which LATAM fares include a checked bag?

Standard and Full in Economy include one 23 kg bag, as do Premium Economy and Premium Business Standard. Premium Business Full includes two. Basic and Light include no checked bag at all.

What does LATAM charge for an overweight bag from the US?

On other international routes, which include the United States, a bag from 23 to 32 kg costs USD 100 and one from 32 to 45 kg costs USD 200, per piece, before taxes.

What is the LATAM oversize baggage fee?

A bag between 158 and 300 linear cm costs USD 125 on US routes. Overweight and oversize fees are charged separately, so a bag that breaks both limits pays both.

Can I buy LATAM checked baggage after booking?

Yes, in My Trips up to 6 hours before the flight, at a lower price than the airport. Prepaid baggage is only offered when LATAM operates the whole route, and unused paid bags are not refunded.
