LATAM Airlines checked bag fees
We have not verified this airline's baggage fees against the carrier yet. Rather than guess, we have left it blank — check the airline before you fly.
This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at LATAM Airlines Baggage Rules.
LATAM prices extra baggage by route, not by one flat US number. On the corridor between South America and the United States, a first extra checked bag runs US$70.
LATAM Airlines baggage fees also depend on the fare you booked. Basic and Light carry no included checked bag at all.
The LATAM Airlines baggage rules page covers the headline allowances by fare. This page goes deeper into LATAM Airlines baggage fees: what extra bags cost, when to prepay, and which cards skip the charge.
Why LATAM has no single global bag fee
Most US carriers post one fee for a first checked bag nationwide. LATAM instead prices extra baggage by corridor. Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru each have their own domestic price, and international travel is split into zones such as South America to the United States or South America to Europe.
LATAM’s own checked baggage fees page asks you to pick a specific route before it shows a number. There is no single LATAM Airlines baggage fee to quote across the whole network.
The clearest published figures sit on LATAM’s interline schedule. It prices excess and extra baggage for connecting tickets and tickets issued by another airline.
| Route | 1st extra bag | 2nd extra bag | 3rd extra bag or more |
|---|---|---|---|
| South America to the United States, Africa or Asia | US$70 | US$120 | US$200 |
| South America to Central America, the Caribbean or Mexico | US$40 | US$100 | US$200 |
| Between South American countries | US$40 | US$100 | US$200 |
| Ecuador to the United States or Canada | US$120 | US$140 | US$220 |
These are LATAM’s interline figures for connecting or non LATAM tickets. On a ticket LATAM issues and flies in full, the fee to add a bag can differ.
It only appears once you enter your reservation on LATAM’s own fee page. The fare class changes whether the first bag is even free.
Which fares include a checked bag
LATAM’s fare tier decides the starting point before any fee applies. Basic and Light include no checked bag, so the numbers above are what a first bag costs to add.
- Standard, Full, and Premium Economy Standard or Full include one 23 kg checked bag.
- Premium Business Full includes two 23 kg checked bags.
- LATAM Pass Platinum and higher tiers get one extra checked bag free on Light fare or above.
A traveler on Basic paying for a first bag is buying what a Standard fare already includes. Compare that fare gap against the standalone baggage fee before you book.
Carry-on and personal item fees on Basic fares
Basic fare skips the 12 kg small bag too. This is where LATAM Airlines baggage fees reward planning ahead. LATAM’s carry-on baggage fees page lists four purchase windows, and the price climbs at each one.
On the South America to Central America and Caribbean corridor, adding the small bag costs US$35 to US$90 more than 48 hours out. Inside 48 hours it rises to US$40 to US$110. At the gate it is a flat US$110.
Prepaying and how much it saves
The pattern repeats on every route LATAM publishes: book early in My Trips, pay less. The price rises step by step as departure gets closer. The gate price is the highest LATAM charges, on both checked and small bags.
A bag bought at the gate is also non refundable if you skip using it. Checking a bag online, as early as your fare allows, is the one lever a traveler fully controls. A baggage cost calculator compares that prepaid price against a rival carrier’s flat fee.
Overweight and oversize baggage
LATAM measures a checked bag against 23 kg, or 50.7 lb, as the standard included weight. Bags between 23 and 32 kg pay an excess weight charge.
Bags between 32 and 45 kg pay a second, higher band. On some corridors, such as within Europe or South America to Oceania, LATAM does not accept bags over 32 kg at all.
Oversize applies once length plus width plus height passes 158 cm, or 62 inches. That charge stacks on top of a weight band if a bag is both heavy and oversize. A digital luggage scale, such as the Etekcity digital luggage scale, tells you the number before the counter agent does it for you.
Credit cards and elite status that waive fees
LATAM names two groups whose extra bags do not count toward its normal piece limits. The first is passengers holding a LATAM Pass co branded credit card linked to the account. The second is Black Signature, Black or Platinum members of LATAM Pass.
Both groups get additional checked pieces at no charge, on top of what the fare already includes. Neither benefit appears automatically when you price a bag online.
Attach the card or the LATAM Pass number to the booking before departure. Do it early, so the waiver applies at check in rather than becoming an argument at the counter.
How LATAM compares to its rivals
LATAM’s route by route pricing is unusual among the carriers US travelers cross shop against. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines both post one domestic first and second bag fee.
It holds across every route they fly. That makes their sites faster to price, though it does not mean either one is cheaper.
Avianca, a fellow South American carrier with a similar Basic fare, sits closer to LATAM in shape. Both exclude a checked bag on their cheapest fare and both price extra baggage by region. Check the specific corridor on each airline’s own site rather than assuming one is the default cheaper choice.
The bottom line
LATAM Airlines baggage fees reward planning over improvising, more than most US carriers do. Book at least a Standard fare if you need one checked bag.
Paying to add a bag to Basic or Light often costs close to the fare gap itself. The upgrade can end up the cheaper move.
Add any bag you know you need in My Trips as early as possible. LATAM’s own gate prices run highest on every route it publishes. If you hold LATAM Pass Platinum status or a linked credit card, confirm it is attached to the booking so the free extra piece applies without a fight at the counter.
