SunExpress’s cheapest fare does not include a real carry-on bag. The SunLight fare’s only cabin item is a single 4 kg piece, capped at 30 x 40 x 20 cm. That is the core of SunExpress baggage policy: generous once you move up a fare tier, and a trap on the bottom rung.
SunExpress is the joint venture between Lufthansa Group and Turkish Airlines. That parentage sets up an expectation the airline does not meet. Every SunExpress ticket runs on its own fare rules, not either parent’s.
Cabin bag rules by fare
SunLight passengers get one small bag, 30 x 40 x 20 cm and 4 kg, and nothing else. The higher tiers are SunValue, SunEco+ and SunComfort. Each gets one piece at 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg, per SunExpress’s own hand baggage page.
SunExpress does not list a separate free personal item for any fare above SunLight. That differs from carriers that bundle an underseat bag on every ticket. Pack accordingly.
Checked baggage limits and fees
SunLight includes no checked bag at all. Adding one at the airport costs extra on top of the ticket price. SunValue includes 20 kg on international routes and 15 kg on domestic ones.
SunEco+ steps up to 30 kg or 20 kg, depending on the route group. Domestic flights on that fare get 15 kg. SunComfort tops out at 35 kg or 25 kg, and 25 kg domestic.
Per SunExpress’s checked baggage page, no single piece may exceed 158 cm in combined length, width and height. No piece may weigh more than 32 kg under EU rules. Go past your fare’s included weight and the charge is by the kilogram, the part of SunExpress baggage policy that costs the most in practice.
Where the fee schedule bites
Overweight bags cost 10 EUR or 10 GBP per kilogram on international routes. Oversized bags cost 45 EUR per piece, or 80 EUR to and from Ireland. The UK oversize charge is 80 GBP per piece, and domestic Turkish flights bill both fees in lira.
Buy your checked allowance when you book, not at the gate. A bag added at check-in on a SunLight fare adds a flat charge. That is on top of whatever weight you then choose.
What travelers actually run into
Forum reports on SunExpress baggage policy split in two directions. One Alanya route traveler called the 8 kg cabin limit ‘fairly mean.’ That traveler confirmed SunLight’s 4 kg cap is real, not a typo.
A separate traveler flying Gatwick to Dalaman reported the opposite. Staff showed no interest in weighing hand luggage in either direction. Checked bags went unmeasured against the stated size limit too.
The rule is not fake, but enforcement is inconsistent. Treat the printed limit as the one to respect. Online check-in also closes 36 hours before departure, and skipping it means an airport check-in fee.
Comparing it to the parent carriers
Lufthansa includes a free personal item on every fare. That holds even on its most restrictive Economy Basic tier. SunExpress does not extend that same baseline to its cheapest ticket.
That gap is what catches passengers who assume the group shares one rulebook. If you connect onto SunExpress from a Star Alliance or Miles and More flight, check the fare code directly. The standard carry-on size limits most US travelers know do not carry over here.
The bottom line
SunExpress baggage policy rewards planning and punishes assuming. Pick a fare above SunLight if you need a real carry-on. Buy checked weight at booking, and check in online before the cutoff.
