The box, and what counts toward it
Thai’s carry on baggage page allows one bag per passenger in every cabin, from Economy to Royal First. The limit is 56 cm long, 45 cm wide and 25 cm thick.
Thai states that wheels, handles and side pockets are part of the measurement. The bag must go in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front.
The page also gives a second way of stating it: one bag not over 7 kg or 45 linear inches, about 115 cm. A US 22 x 14 x 9 in case totals 45 linear inches exactly.
It fits the three dimensions with room to spare on width. Size is rarely the reason a bag fails on Thai.

Seven kilos, checked twice
Seven kilograms is 15.4 lb. A mid weight hardside spinner uses a third of it before anything goes in. Thai’s page states that spot checks may be performed against the test unit and the weighing machine.
That can happen at the check-in counter and at the boarding gate. Two chances to be weighed is more than most carriers offer.

Pack the heavy items, chargers, books and shoes, into the checked bag. Economy gets two 23 kg pieces there on most long haul routes.
The personal item is tiny
Thai’s free items list is generous in kind and strict in size. A handbag, wallet, purse or notebook computer may be carried free.
It may measure no more than 37.5 x 25 x 12.5 cm, which is 15 x 10 x 5 in, or 75 cm in total. It may weigh no more than 1.5 kg. That is a laptop in a sleeve, not a laptop in a bag.
Walking sticks and crutches for passengers who need them, and infant food, are also free. Everything else, including a full size backpack, is the carry-on or goes in the hold.

Star Alliance Gold gets a second bag
Star Alliance Gold members in Royal First or Royal Silk may bring one additional carry-on. The journey has to involve two or more Star Alliance carriers.
In Economy and Economy Plus the additional allowance is nil, Gold or not. The extra bag is subject to the same 7 kg and 56 x 45 x 25 cm limits.
What happens when a bag fails
Thai’s page does not print a gate fee. A bag over 7 kg or over the box is stowed in the hold.
If the passenger is already at the full checked allowance, the excess charges on the Thai Airways baggage fees page apply at the airport rate. The page’s safety language about bags falling from lockers in turbulence is why staff do not negotiate.

The size box is roomy and the weight cap is tight. The right bag on Thai is the lightest one that holds a trip.

Customer reviews of the Freeform and the Farpoint commonly mention 7 kg Asian carriers as the reason for buying them. The Maxlite is the surprise. It is light, but its wheel inclusive height is 2 cm over the Thai Airways carry on bag size on paper.

Most US travelers reach Bangkok with a connection on a partner airline. Pack for the tightest rule on the itinerary.
