Thai Airways Checked Baggage

The Thai Airways checked baggage size limit is 158 cm (62 in) total, wheels and handles included, on every route and in every cabin. Weight is where the cabins split.

Economy bags stop at 23 kg. Royal First, Royal Silk and Premium Economy Plus bags stop at 32 kg.

Thai moved its whole network to a piece system for travel from 2 March 2026. That changed the math for most of Asia and Europe. US and Canada routes had counted pieces all along.

Size: one number for every bag

Thai publishes a single dimension rule. Each checked bag must not exceed 158 cm, or 62 inches, when you add height, width and length. That total includes wheels and handles, so measure the case standing up with the handle down.

Weight: 23 kg or 32 kg, by cabin

Each piece may weigh up to 32 kg (70 lb) in Royal First, Royal Silk and Premium Economy Plus. Each piece may weigh up to 23 kg (50 lb) in Premium Economy and Economy. Those caps are per bag, not pooled across bags.

The 32 kg figure is also the absolute ceiling. Thai does not sell an overweight band above it. Ground handlers in some countries are barred from lifting heavier bags.

A 23 kg tier bag between 23 and 32 kg pays the airport zone rate for overweight. Thai does not publish that rate as a flat US dollar figure. The Thai Airways baggage fees page covers how that rate is set.

Allowance by cabin and fare

On US and Canada routes the piece concept has applied for years. Thai’s checked baggage page publishes the international table for the Piece Concept by cabin and fare family.

On purely domestic sectors under the new policy, every fare family from Saver to Royal Silk gets one piece. The weight follows the cabin: 32 kg in Royal Silk and Premium Economy Plus, 23 kg in everything else. The same 158 cm size rule applies.

Status adds pieces on top. Royal Orchid Plus Platinum members get two extra pieces.

Gold and Star Alliance Gold members get one at the cabin’s weight, and Silver members get one at 23 kg. Mixed cabin itineraries take the allowance of the highest cabin paid for.

What cannot go in the hold

Thai reserves the right to refuse a checked bag that is not properly packed. It says so on the checked baggage page itself.

Beyond that, the usual dangerous goods rules apply. Spare lithium batteries and power banks travel in the cabin only, inside the Thai Airways carry-on limits.

Firearms, sporting weapons and other declared items follow Thai’s special baggage rules. Arrange them before the day of travel.

Sports equipment over 158 cm is priced as bulky baggage. Between 200 and 330 cm an additional airport zone rate applies on top of the oversize charge.

Whose allowance governs on a connecting ticket

Thai’s page states the rule for US itineraries plainly. On a codeshare flight touching the United States or its territories, the marketing carrier’s baggage rules apply. That is the airline whose flight number is on the ticket, not the one whose aircraft you board.

Thai also warns that on multi airline journeys the partner’s rules may govern instead. A stopover resets the assessment. After a stop at an intermediate point, the allowance and any charge are measured again from that point.

What happens at the counter

Expect the counter to weigh every piece and apply the per piece cap as written. Two 23 kg bags pass in Economy on a US route. One 30 kg bag does not, and it cannot borrow weight from the other bag.

Cases that keep 23 kg honest

The Thai Airways checked baggage size rule is generous. The 23 kg weight cap is not, so an empty case weight matters.

The Maxlite 5 29 inch is light for a big case. A full 29 inch case still reaches 23 kg before it looks full.

The bottom line

Pack every bag to the Thai Airways checked baggage size of 158 cm and to the weight your cabin allows. That is 23 kg in Economy and Premium Economy, or 32 kg in the premium cabins.

US and Canada routes give two free pieces in every fare. The whole network counts pieces from March 2026.
