Turkish Airlines baggage fees: the one flat number

This oversize band is wider than most rivals allow before they refuse a bag outright. A 292 cm total is a large sports bag stacked on a hardside case.

The real risk for most flyers is the weight cap, not the size cap. Turkish Airlines also notes that excess baggage charges can shift up to eight hours before departure.

• Economy checked bags run up to 23 kg, about 50.7 lb, each under the piece system used on US routes.
• Business checked bags run up to 32 kg, about 70 lb, each. That is well past the weight limit most economy fares allow.
• Domestic Turkish flights switch to a kilogram based allowance instead of the piece concept.

Anyone flying an Istanbul connection with a domestic leg should check both allowances on their own. The US originating rules do not always carry through.

How much your free allowance depends on the fare

The free piece count on your ticket is not fixed either. It moves with the branded fare. EcoFly sits at the low end, ExtraFly and PrimeFly add pieces, and BusinessFly and BusinessPrime carry the most generous allowance.

This trips up more travelers than the per kilo math. A traveler on the cheapest EcoFly fare can find a second bag priced as a paid extra. A colleague on ExtraFly gets the same bag free.

Where Turkish Airlines differs is the oversize band. A 158 to 292 cm bag still ships for a flat fee here, where many rivals would refuse it outright.

Most other Gulf and European hub carriers run similar route based pricing. Check the calculator, never guess, applies across most long haul hub networks.

Packing to avoid a paid bag

A set of packing cubes compresses clothing enough that some travelers fit a week’s trip into the free carry-on alone. That skips the checked bag question on a short Istanbul connection.
