Checked bag allowance varies by fare family (Eco Budget, Eco Plus, Club Class) and is shown only through Air Transat flight specific baggage checker. A last minute fee of about US$62.50 for a first bag and US$78.25 for a second applies on US routes when a bag is bought within 24 hours of departure, effective June 1, 2026.

Air Transat caps every checked bag at 23 kg (50 lb) and 158 cm (62 in) linear. It charges 100 USD the moment a bag crosses either line.
The two fees stack. A bag that is both heavy and large pays 200 USD at the airport, with no way to prepay it.

Allowance by fare
Air Transat sells three Economy fares and two Club fares. The carrier publishes exact inclusions through its baggage allowance checker rather than one flat table. What follows is what its fare page states in words.

The split that surprises people is Eco Standard. On a Toronto to London ticket it carries a free checked bag. On a Toronto to Cancun ticket the same fare name does not state one.
The bag becomes an add-on. Run your own itinerary through the checker before you assume.
Adding a bag online is cheaper than at the counter, and Air Transat closes prepayment 24 hours before departure. Since June 1, 2026 a last minute fee applies on US routes when a bag is bought inside that window.

Weight and size, and the absolute ceiling
Every bag in the Air Transat checked baggage allowance is limited to 23 kg and 158 cm linear. Linear means length plus width plus height.
Between 23 kg and 32 kg the bag is overweight and pays 100 USD. Above 32 kg (70 lb) it is refused as baggage and must ship as cargo.
Size works the same way in the Air Transat checked baggage allowance. Between 158 cm and 292 cm (115 in) the bag is oversized and pays 100 USD.

Air Transat charges the two fees independently. A 26 kg bag at 170 cm pays 200 USD.
Both fees are payable only at the airport. That is the carrier’s way of saying it would rather you fix the bag than pay.
What cannot go in the hold
Air Transat refuses fragile and perishable items in checked baggage. Its list includes medications, currency, jewelry, electronics, laptops and other valuables. Those travel in the cabin within the Air Transat carry-on limits.
Lithium rules follow the usual pattern. Small battery powered vehicles such as hoverboards and electric skateboards are banned entirely.
Electronic cigarettes cannot go in checked baggage, and neither can lighters. Spare batteries and power banks ride in the cabin.
Sports equipment must be prepaid at least 72 hours before departure, three times the notice a standard bag needs. Firearms and other declared items follow the carrier’s special items rules, so check them before you reach the counter.
Whose allowance governs on a connecting ticket
If your ticket includes another airline, one carrier’s allowance applies to the whole journey. On a single ticket, the most significant carrier rule decides which one. That is usually the airline flying the longest international sector.
On a US to Europe itinerary through Montreal or Toronto, that is normally Air Transat. Your ticket receipt states the allowance that applies. The counter agent follows the ticket, not either airline’s website.
What happens at the counter
Expect the counter to weigh every bag, and expect the 23 kg line to be applied as written. Repacking into a carry-on is the usual fix.
The Air Transat checked baggage allowance is per bag, not per passenger. Two 20 kg bags are fine and one 26 kg bag is not.

Cases that keep you under 23 kg
A light empty case leaves more of the allowance for what you pack. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 25 inch spinner is one of the lightest cases in its size. At 25 inches it sits well inside 158 cm linear.
The bigger Maxlite 5 29 inch is light for its class. A full 29 inch case still reaches 23 kg long before it looks full.
Hardside buyers get the same choice. The Samsonite Omni PC 24 inch is the week away size and clears 158 cm with room.
The Omni PC 28 inch is big enough that weight, not size, becomes the constraint. The Delsey Helium Aero 24 inch adds a built in lock in the same medium class.
One warning. The Amazon Basics 30 inch hardside is cheap and popular. A 30 inch case, though, can total more than 158 cm once wheels and handle are counted.
