This page goes deeper on one part of the policy. The full record is at Air Transat Baggage Rules.
Air Transat covers 50 CAD per day, per bag, for up to 7 days of essential purchases while a bag is delayed. That is one of the longer interim allowances any carrier prints. It still needs a Property Irregularity Report from the airport and receipts for every purchase.
An Air Transat lost baggage case has clear rules once you know where they live. The airline keeps them on its claims page rather than its baggage page.
This page covers the report, the WorldTracer tracker, the daily allowance and the 21 and 30 day deadlines. It ends with damaged bag rules and what the airline pays.
How to report a bag that did not arrive
Tell an Air Transat representative at arrival, before you leave the baggage hall, and complete a Property Irregularity Report. The PIR carries the reference number every later step uses.
If the desk is closed or you had to leave, file online. Air Transat says to use the QR code the agent provides.
Bring your boarding pass and the baggage tag stubs. Describe the bag by brand, color and size, and be ready to list the contents. Our guide to reporting a missing bag covers what to have ready.
Tracking a delayed Air Transat bag
Air Transat uses WorldTracer, the baggage tracing system shared by most of the world’s airlines. Enter your PIR reference number in the WorldTracer tracking page to see the current status. The airline also emails updates as they become available, so keep the address on the file current.
Most delayed bags are matched within a day or two. A bag that misses a connection in Montreal or Toronto usually follows on the next Air Transat flight. For what each status means, see how to track a lost bag.
A tracker in the bag is the best complement to WorldTracer. An Apple AirTag 4 pack covers a family’s luggage.
A Tile by Life360 tracker works with Android. A live dot on a map is hard for a search desk to argue with.
The 50 CAD per day allowance
Air Transat’s stated allowance is 50 CAD per day, per bag, for a maximum of 7 days. It covers the purchase of essential items.
That is up to 350 CAD for one delayed bag. You submit the receipts through an online form, and the airline reviews them for reimbursement.
Keep purchases modest and clearly essential: toiletries, basic clothing, a charger. On flights to or from the United States, federal rules also require reimbursement of reasonable, verifiable expenses.
No arbitrary daily cap is allowed. Our delayed baggage guide explains how to present the receipts.
Deadlines, and when a bag is lost
File the delayed baggage claim no later than 21 days from the date the bag was returned to you. If the bag is never recovered, Air Transat treats it as lost after 21 days.
The Air Transat lost baggage claim must then be filed within 30 days of the date the bag should have been delivered. On a domestic Canadian flight the window is 21 days.
Both claims go through the airline’s online form with supporting documents. Send the PIR reference, receipts, a contents list with values and proof of purchase for anything expensive.
What Air Transat pays
Air Transat states that its liability is limited to 1,519 SDR per passenger for all flight sectors. That is the current Montreal Convention figure, roughly 2,175 USD.
It matches the number the US Department of Transportation publishes. Domestic Canadian flights fall under the Air Passenger Protection Regulations, which apply the same limit.
Compensation is paid on proven actual loss up to that cap, not automatically at the cap. Read how lost luggage compensation is calculated before you write the value list.
Damaged bags
Complete a PIR at the airport, or file online within 7 days of receiving the bag. Air Transat then gives you 45 days from the date of the claim to bring the bag to a repair shop. Photograph the damage with the claim tag visible before you leave the airport.
On US itineraries, federal rules stop an airline excluding wheels, handles and straps from a damage claim. Our damaged luggage claims guide covers what counts as normal wear and what does not.
What travelers report
Traveler accounts of Air Transat lost baggage cases cluster around the Montreal and Toronto hubs on sun and Europe routes. Bags misconnected there tend to surface within two days.
The online form is the slow part. Reimbursement of the daily allowance can take weeks after the receipts go in.
Claims that pay out have a PIR from the airport, dated receipts and a contents list filed inside the deadline. Claims that stall were reported after leaving the airport without the QR code, or filed past the 21 day mark.
Prevention
Keep valuables in the cabin, inside the Air Transat carry-on limits. The airline refuses medications, currency, jewelry and electronics in checked baggage. The Air Transat baggage allowance record explains that rule.
Tag the outside. A pair of Travelambo leather luggage tags with a phone number and email still reaches you when the airline tag tears off. Put an itinerary printout inside too.
The bottom line
Report at the airport, keep the PIR, and watch WorldTracer. Buy essentials against receipts up to 50 CAD a day for a week. Claim within 21 days of the bag’s return.
If it never comes, file the Air Transat lost baggage claim within 30 days with a contents list. The airline’s baggage claims page sets out every rule above.
