Prepay online, do not pay at the gate
Austrian states outright that airport pricing costs more. Its baggage conditions page says a bag bought at the airport costs more than one added ahead of time. Austrian also offers a reduced price for the first checked bag when it is added early rather than at the counter.
The lesson is simple. Add a missing checked bag in Manage Booking once your travel dates are set. Waiting until check in or the airport counter locks in the higher rate.
On a route with tight bag allotments, even a same day add on can cost more than one bought a week earlier. Book it as soon as you know you need it.
Elite status and credit cards
