United Airlines Baggage Fees

United does not print one flat United checked bag fee. It runs every bag through a per itinerary calculator. The price shifts with your route, your fare and the date you bought the ticket.

United’s own checked bags page says to use the calculator. It states plainly that the price depends on where and how you travel. The page also lists three 2026 dates when United checked bag fee pricing moved up.

Fees rose April 3 on domestic flights and short hops to Latin America, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico. They rose again May 12 on many flights from the United States to Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. A third increase landed July 21 on flights to Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and between Asian countries.

What United does publish

United will not hand you a first or second bag dollar figure without a route and a ticket. What it does publish are the size and weight caps. Those caps decide whether a bag needs the calculator, or an overweight surcharge on top of it.

United’s prepay page confirms you save time at the airport by paying online. On some routes you also get a discount if you prepay more than 24 hours before departure. It does not state the discount amount, since that also rides on route and date.

Overweight and oversize bags

MileagePlus status buys a free bag long before it buys anything else. Per United’s own Premier benefits page, Premier Silver gets one free checked bag. Gold gets two, and Platinum and 1K each get three, all up to 70 lb.

Star Alliance Gold status earned on a partner airline carries an extra baggage allowance on United too. A United branded credit card is the other common route. Basic Economy and the carry-on squeeze

Basic Economy tickets on most United routes drop the free carry-on. What is left is a personal item only. Show up at the gate with a rolling bag on that fare, and United checks it there and adds the 25 USD gate handling charge on top.
