What that means at the gate is simple. If your bag clearly fits, agents wave it through without measuring. If it looks oversized, or the bins are already full, it gets tagged and sent below.

That is often free on a mainline United flight. It is less predictable on a United Express regional. Community reports describe the margin as thin: a bag that is an inch over often gets pulled, while one that squeezes through at check-in usually flies.

The 22 x 14 x 9 inch box

United Airlines carry-on size rules give you one clean number to remember: 22 x 14 x 9 inches, or 56 x 35 x 23 cm. The airline is explicit that this figure includes the handle and the wheels, not just the shell. There is no published weight cap on a United carry-on bag.

That puts United ahead of most European carriers. A 10 kg or 12 kg scale check at the gate is common over there. United relies on size alone.

The personal item box is smaller: 17 x 10 x 9 inches, 43 x 25 x 22 cm. It has to fit under the seat in front of you. United counts a purse, backpack or laptop bag as your personal item, and it will not let a small purse ride on top of it.

Basic Economy and the carry-on you do not get

This is the part United Airlines carry-on size questions usually miss. On most domestic United Basic Economy fares, you get a personal item only. The carry-on allowance is gone, and anything bigger has to be checked and paid for.

There is one exception worth knowing. United restores the free carry-on on Basic Economy tickets to South America. It also restores it across the Atlantic and across the Pacific.

So a Basic Economy fare to Frankfurt behaves differently from a Basic Economy fare to Denver. Elite MileagePlus members and Star Alliance Gold members also get the carry-on back. So does anyone flying with a Premier member, or holding a qualifying United credit card.

Guess wrong on a domestic Basic Economy fare and the bag has to be checked at the airport. United’s own pricing shows what that costs. For tickets bought before April 3, 2026, checking that bag runs $35 prepaid, $40 at the counter or $65 at the gate.

When a bag fails at the gate

A carry-on that does not fit the box, or a bag beyond your allowance, is sent below rather than turned away. On most United mainline flights that costs nothing and the bag reappears at baggage claim. On a United Express regional flight, especially one run by CommutAir, space runs out faster.

Even a compliant carry-on can end up below the cabin there, usually with no charge, since regional cabins simply hold less. Keep medication, chargers and keys in your personal item rather than the carry-on. If the carry-on gets pulled at the door, the personal item still rides with you.

Bags that fit United’s box, and two that do not

United’s box is generous by airline standards. But a few popular carry-ons marketed as 21 inch or 20 inch cases measure larger than their nominal size once the wheels and handle count. The maker’s own spec sheet matters more than the number printed on the lid.

The Platinum Elite and the Maxlite 5 both carry a 21 inch label on the case body. Travelpro’s own spec sheet lists the overall size, wheels and handle included, at 23 to 23.5 inches tall. That is over United’s 22 inch cap before a single item goes inside.

Reviewers who fly United with either bag report no trouble at check-in. Gate agents rarely pull a bag that looks close. A strict measurement at the counter would still catch it.

The Samsonite Omni PC clears United’s box with margin, according to its manufacturer specifications. The Wrangler Smart Spinner sits at the opposite edge. Its 22 inch nominal size leaves almost nothing to spare, so it has to stay unexpanded.
